The Sharpeville Massacre on the 21st of March 1960 was a turning point in the struggle for freedom that was waged by the oppressed African population of South Africa. This also led to the apartheid system being declared "A Crime Against Humanity". The system deprived the black majority in the country of their human rights, as enshrined in the universal Bill of Rights. As South Africa celebrates Human Rights Day, the world will also pause and observe the U.N. International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
