@@captainchaos8701 It was probably those dope goggles he sported. He was a solid player also, but his eyewear was unusual, which branded him in a unique way, and that signature look made him memorable. There are players from his era who were just as good, or even better, who are barely remembered. Others that come to mind that fall into this memorable branding camp are: - John Olerud (and his batting helmet) - Barry Bonds (dangly cross earing, turtleneck, and cyborg arm pad) - Jim Abbot (one hand; his incredible throwing to glove-on-hand transition - *and also prob my fav Angel pitcher of all time*) - Julio Franco (batting stance & swing) - Frank Thomas (straight up huge man, and even on TV, he just looked like a total hulk) - Randy Johnson (legendary pitching aside, he was memorable for his crazy tall & lanky frame, mustache, and mullet) - Reggie Jackson (Mr October was always rocking his aviator style glasses or sunglasses) - Rollie Fingers (curled, handlebar mustache) - Tim Lincecum (long, straight hair and resemblance to Joseph Gordon-Levitt) Bartolo Colon (pudgy pitcher with a great personality, who hit one of the greatest Mets dingers of all time) ...and many others. Heck, even a negative thing can brand a player forever: - Bill Buckner (he was an All Star, NL Batting Champ, had 2700+ Hits, 170+ HRs, and 1200+ RBIs, but does anyone remember that? Nope, they remember him catastrophically missing a first base ground ball in the '86 WS forever). - Armando Galarraga/Jim Joyce (the Perfect Game that wasn't, due to Joyce's botched 1st Base 'Safe' call. Though the game is not recorded as a PG in MLB record books, everyone knows that it was, in fact, a PG, and so it has ironically become one of the most memorable PGs ever) Other sports: - Dennis Rodman (his hair colors, piercings + his tattoos were unique in his era) - Anthony Davis (unibrow) - Troy Polamalu (long wavy black hair) - Clay Matthews (long blonde hair) There are lots, of course. Some of the above are just fashion/lifestyle related, some are just that they use unique gear, and others are purely genetic and just part of who the player is and their story. But all of these things are memorable. Most of the above also happen to be solid or even great players, but they are remembered in a different way than their peers because of their uniqueness. Wow, this got long. lol

Cork is abnormally poor for baseball, because it absorbs a ton of the shock from hitting the ball. It's essentially like hitting it with a foam toy bat. No player would knowingly take a cork-filled bat, because it's incredibly difficult to hit far with one. There's no way he knew it was corked if he willingly took that bat.
@bulletbourne327

Reminds me of when Mythbusters proved a corked bat makes the ball travel shorter distances due to the corked core absorbing a large percentage of the impact unlike aluminum which absorbs less of the impact making the ball travel farther due to the higher percentage of momentum conserved in the elastic impact. So if you can hit a homerun with a corked bat, give that batter a medal

the thing is, MLB players don’t use aluminum bats, i’d like to see how corked is compared to a standard wood bat.
@CreamySpoon

That was a bogus test, IMO. The whole point of using cork is to make the bat lighter, thus increasing swing speed. A faster bat *can* produce a longer hit ball. Same as in golf. IIRC, they did not adjust the swing speed of the mechanical arm. EDIT: Wow, there's a lot of replies to my comment, some of which are a bit uncalled for, so let me clarify... If we're only talking about the potential distance advantages of a corked bat, I think it still boils down to force. That is, the greater the force applied to the ball, the longer the ball will travel. IIRC, the calculation is F=MA. So, if the mass is dropped slightly, so does the force and the ball won't travel as far as noted in the Mythbusters experiment. However, if the drop in mass allows for the batter to swing it faster (and logically it does), then the corked bat *may* result in a farther hit ball, so long as the increased swing speed more then compensates for the decrease in mass. What I would have liked them to do: run the calculation "for mass of bat m1 with a swing speed of s1, the resultant distance is d1". I would run this multiple times to account for minor variables. Then cork the bat and note the drop in mass. Then perform the calc for the breakeven point "for mass m2, the swing speed must be at least s2 to achieve the original distance of d1". Then adjust the swing speed of the bat to s2 to demonstrate it. Then conclude what the likelihood of achieving s2 (or greater) is. Something like, "you'd have to increase your swing speed from 90 to 120 mph" which seems unlikely and would conclude corking is not worth it. To the contrary, "you'd have to increase your swing speed from 90 to 94" might be achievable and thus worth it (aside from the penalty of getting caught). For completeness, I would also perform this experiment on various sizes of bats. Perhaps corking a small bat doesn't make sense, but corking a larger one does? Also, players use corked bats for reasons other than a gain in distance.

But now he is just a giant homer that always jumps to conclusions based on his employment with the Reds/FoxSportsOH. He is usually wrong and won't even admit with the invention of instant replay. He has a very bad reputation in the media as a biased homer. Even when replay proves him wrong and Thom telling him he might be off a little bit - he won't admit it. He has become an idiot in his advanced age but you are right about one thing. HE is awesome to listen too especially when the Reds are getting the asses kicked. A lighter bat gives a hitter a quicker swing and may improve the hitter's timing.” (Edit; Wikipedia copy/paste)(Edit 2; I’m amused at how many people take seeing a copy/paste as a personal insult.)

It's called a lie. How does practice gear make it in with game gear? Is this little league where one of the childrens father is the coach and doesn't want to spend more of his own money to keep gear seperated? Every MLB team could bring out lets say 3 bats per player # wise. Then the umpires could select like 3 to 5 total random bats to intentionally bust per before the first pitch. These teams have to much money to work with for this stupid crap. Peace

MLB has regulations on how heavy and how long bats can be, players cork bats to make them lighter making them faster to swing, Corking a bat does not give extra distance when you hit a ball but it does make it easier to make contact with the ball since you can swing it a bit faster making it easier to make contact with the ball, SO it would be more cost effective to have a electronic scale that every bat being used in the game has to be weighed, if the bat is too light it can't be used in the game.

@@Maninawig Some people believe that having a cork core (drilling out the center of your baseball bat and filling it with wine bottle corks) will make the ball go further when hit by the bat, as the bat is lighter and therefore easier to swing quickly. Whether this is true or not is unknown (and Mythbusters came to the conclusion that its actually detrimental). Regardless, it was banned by the MLB so that people don't go looking for ways to use things hidden in the bat to gain an unfair advantage.

Fun fact about cork wood. It's a much softer wood that absorbs more of the impact of a baseball when compared to oak wood. So using a cork bat might actually lessen the overall distance the ball travels when struck. Aluminum absorbs so little it can actually multiply the speed of the ball so fast that it could kill a pitcher in a line drive.

I remember Chris Sabo’s towering home runs in Centennial Park in Burlington VT when he played AA ball. It was funny to hear the commentators talking about the Reds not having a lot of good players in the minor leagues which was probably true when Sabo was in the majors, but there were a depth of players that came up with him that ended up having distinguished Major League careers. There were at least two future HOF players who came up through that AA team in those few years.

If I remember correctly the ending of this the bat boy actually stated he brought out the wrong bat when sabo's original bat broke, and I distinctly remember sabo saying he was unaware it was corked till after it broke and he looked down at it ,he knew he was going to be ejected even if it wasn't his fault the bat he used was corked, sabo's not stupid enough to cheat, I think that's why now teams tend to mark the corked bats to tell them apart from the actual solid bats (if I'm mistaken please correct me but I'm sure I remember teams starting to make the corked bats easier to identify against non-corked ones)

The word *CORKED* in big bold letters on the side or the grip. No tangible difference from a real one, just the world's easiest way to tell the two apart if you have eyes. Why was such a simple change never implemented we never know.

The obvious conclusion is he didn't know it was corked. Someone who did know would have taken the chance of getting it examined after cracking instead of breaking it open to be seen by everyone.
