Greatly selected examples. I wish referees other than the international ones would know how to assess that though 😂

well I think we can conclusively say you're doing god's work with this one 🙌

This is a MUCH needed video. Also, Szilagyi's reaction to not getting the touch is CLASSIC #ConfusedSzilagyi

I see this directed wrong in many clubs. Sometimes opponent just stands there and waits for the attack to continue or for re-doublment and attacks in to your attack. Very good vid!

I remember a time, especially in foil, where the Fencer A attacks, Fencer B pulls distance, then more distance, and Fencer A sees this and figures Fencer B isn't riposting. And then, the referee would call Attack No, Counterattack Yes. And I would point out that Fencer B (me being Fencer A) was retreating after my attack fell short, and cannot be an immediate counterattack, or riposte, as their retreat footwork cannot be considered offence in any way. And they would look at me and say "It's his turn."

I feel like it's fair enough that if you just complete the footwork action that avoids the attack then start to come back again, even if only with a micro-step, you should still have priority, but if you take multiple steps back after that you should expect a reprise call. Szilagy took 3 I reckon, Arfa can feel a bit hard done by as only took one, but Oh made him look slow on that touch.

Great video and compilations especially for beginners. I hope you continue with other examples.

Maybe it's my epee ignorance shining through, or else these examples were just really clear, but how would a ref call these any differently? The initial attack is no, but the opponent keeps moving backwards, making the reprise an attack with ROW and whatever the opponent does afterward a counterattack, right?

ditto the other comments. Too many refs call reprise way too early. To call reprise, there is need to more than 1 tempo of nothing from the defense side. I saw so many good parry ripostes got robbed by these calls.

how much time does someone get to take priority or begin an attack if another fencer misses their attack?

I think the second action (szilagyi vs hartung) is a simultanée

Except for the first and last, I got them all right!

Seems like the standard should be you have to take over offensive priority with movement as early as reasonable after attack no, allowing for recovering footwork for balance, but no more retreat than necessary to regain balance and advance. Otherwise, you’re just plain retreating

On the second one, the spacing between the attacks is so long that I feel like calling is as a reprise is unhelpful. The timing between the first attack failing and the "riposte" is so wide that it feels like it's just a counterattack.
