Matthews isn't scoring as much this year because he isn't playing with Marner. Matthews is a hell of a player and his shot is lethal, but Marner drove the majority of the play on that line last season, anyone with a little more in-depth understanding of the game could see it from miles away. Now Matthews plays with Nylander who is more of a shooter and evenly distributed point producer.

@@Loganberry ullmark plays on such a stacked team and under a disciplined coach, put him on a team like the Sharks or Montreal and he would look exceedingly average. guy is a very good goalie, but it's a very team and system dependent position.

I remember that interview. Matthews probably gave the only reasonable response. I totally agreed with him at the time. I was fangirling hard over Thompson back in October. It surprised he’s stayed consistent throughout the season. Can’t imagine how good he would be on a team like Boston or Tampa

@@borisvandruff7532 that’s a bold statement. I’m not saying you’re wrong, but I haven’t watched enough Sabres games to know for myself. I haven’t heard much about Tuch or Skinner, and besides this year never heard of Tage Thompson (aside from analysts debating whether he’s a minor league player or cut out for the NHL…he’s pretty clearly an NHLer now though). When I think about top 5 lines I think about Boston, the Leafs, Tampa Bay, possibly New Jersey, McDavid’s/Draisaitl’s line. If Buffalo continues to improve and these guys continue making names for themselves then I could totally see them as a top 5 line as though as Thompson continues to score and he has some physical presence and a playmaker on his line.
