Just because you live in an apartment, doesn’t mean you can’t make it your own! I remember a friend of mine saying "why would you paint your apartment and do small upgrades?" I have now lived here for over 5 years. This is still my home even if I don't own it! It's so nice to have a space that feels like yours, regardless!

I'm a big believer in making sure your high-touch items feel nice and fit your style. Things you touch every day - cabinet pulls, light switches, faucets, door knobs - are relatively affordable and can literally change your renting experience!

Great advice. I love the black wall and fully believe that for quality it feels like a lot in the moment, but it’s always better in the long run. If you buy cheap, you might have to pay for replacements 2-3 times and end up spending the same amount over time than if you had just bought better. Not everyone has the luxury, and I find you incredibly humble in your suggestions. New follow!

As much as I would love to switch out the ceiling fans, I live in Georgia where fans are an absolute MUST HAVE! I've lived in three different complexes in 9 years and they all come in fans in the living and bedrooms. I would love to change out the lighting in other areas, but would rather wait until I know I will be staying in an area for a long period of time.

Late to this video but new Subbie here! Love all the tips! I lucked out with my Hubby being the lead maintenance tech for the apartments we live ( we get a cute discount) So he can put everything back if we eventually decide to move. I love your bathroom with the matte black, that definitely gave me some inspo as my towel rack is way too high up and that silver. I never thought about switching out the facuet! greadt idea. I love this, I did minor upgrades too. I didn’t paint but I did do wallpaper and it looks great! I added a grey wash brick in my bedroom giving it a loft feel plus my ceilings are super high. In my dining room I put up a matte black wallpaper which looks like paint lol and in the kitchen white subway tile with black grout wallpaper. I even used wallpaper on my bathroom counter lol. Matte black knobs and a matte black shower head. I’m moving out in a month and now I’m like now I gotta take it all down 😩 but I did enjoy having my apartment feel like a home.

Thank you for the emphasis on checking with your landlord, because ultimately it's someone else's property, and I don' think enough people truly respect that. Also I believe that unless a kitchen or bathroom has a backsplash already, or a glossy paint, I would stay away from peel and stick tiles going directly on drywall. Someone I follow removed her peel and stick tiles to do a different backsplash. It ripped off parts of the paint and drywall with it even though she was really careful. Luckily she owns the home, but that would be a concern if it was a rental.

I ALSO HATE CEILING FANS! THANK YOUUUUU they are a huge pain to clean, they get SO nasty, and they really do just make things dustier! A box fan with a furnace filter stuck to it is so much better! Also girl you have an EE degree you are SO COOL!!!!

In some cases, you articulate my needs in ways I could not communicate them prior. Thank you for existing! Painting your rental apartment/house is usually OK/approved by the landlord/owner if you include that you'll paint it back the colour it was. Also provide high quality photos for them to use for marketing their property. And a record of what you did... Some landlords will let you make more permanent changes if you or they say those changes/items can stay (ie changing light fixtures for ceiling fans...). Or if you pay for new/better sink faucets they'll have their maintenance guys install them.
