I think so too. One of the biggest criticism I had with the movie was basically that the movie was far too safe from Freddie's dark life, way too safe. And it took me out of the experience that they had to toned down something to make it PG13. Which is also the main reason I think Rocketman, an Elton John biopic is superior than BoRhap, it's brutally honest and it managed to take risk in what Elton was in his early career. Rocketman was basically what Sacha's plan for BoRhap. Eventhough I enjoyed BoRhap, I wish they took more risk with it

Rami doesn't even look like Freddie, even with the makeup and prosthetics he barely resembles him. To be honest, he looks most like Freddie when he has the 70s Freddie look. Once he gets the mustache and short hair... meh. He doesn't even resemble him. Also, little complaint for the hair and makeup department, they got the hair wrong for late 70s Freddie, and definitely got the hair wrong for Freddie in the 80s. His hair wasn't that thick, and it wasn't just brushed back at all times.

I saw Bohemian Rhapsody, it was a fun and enjoyable movie, but a lot of historical inaccuracies that makes the movie a work of fiction rather then a biopic. I would have loved to seen Sasha Baron Cohen's version rather then Queen's sanitized version. There is a British documentary that came out a few years ago, with some acted out scenes, that is very good, that is the closest Queen fans will ever get to an honest portrayal of Freddie Mercury and Queen. One of Freddie's friends asked him in his last years how he wanted to be remembered on film, Freddie told him that they put anything and everything as long as it wasn't boring. There was no need to sanitize his life story.

Well the movie's out now and they ended up not having him die in the middle so I guess it all worked, especially since that Rami Malek was phenomonal as Freddie and as much as Sacha Baron Cohen looks like him, I just can't picture anyone apart from Malek as him. Also glad they decided to make it more of a tribute than an expose because I think they showed a great amount of respect towards Freddie while also highlighting his problems. Amazing movie if you ask me.

I think poor Rami was heavily coached by someone with a real agenda to completely reduce Freddie and make him look small, slow and selfish. Not even Rami is as tiny as the camera angles made him look. It was so insulting and utterly unjustifiable. There were so many distortions and lies in the film - Freddie deserved a movie that at least attempted to portray his quick wit, warmth, kindness, strength and legendary stature. He had the most natural, effortless charisma, and remains the most powerfully commanding presence onstage the rock world has ever seen.

Why do Brain May and Roger Taylor own the rights to Freddie's biopic anyway? Brain May must be insane if he thinks a movie about Queen is half Freddie, half them now going on tour with Adam Lambert and putting Freddie's songs on every advert from sofa's to every other advert that has a Queen song on. How ridiculous. Sacha should work with Freddies family and do his own movie. The public want Sacha as Freddie!
@Davis30b
@Davis30b 8 жыл бұрын
No one can own the rights to a Freddie biopic. However, they would need the rights to the music. Owners of Queen music rights would need to consent for a Freddie biopic to have their music in the movie. A Freddie biopic without the music would just not be as good.

I loved the version with Rami as Freddie but would happily watch a new version with SBC as Freddie. Art is subjective and can be interpreted in several ways. We've had how many variations of Pride and Prejudice or Little Women over the years?? I've watched almost all of them and enjoyed them all in different ways. The only problem is that SBC needs the music for any version he does and if the band Queen won't sign on, then it's not going to happen. :(

I still want to see Sacha as Freddie. Now that I've seen the movie, it's clear that the band members wanted to see themselves as equals instead of making a movie about Freddie. So it comes off as a rather awkward buddy-buddy situation with a few rare arguments. It could have been so much more raw.

Having seen the new movie, I'm glad someone stopped Queen from doing a biopic where Freddie dies at the middle. And I'm also glad SBC wasn't Freddie, because he's indeed kind of mean. Freddie was not. Rami did a great job and the movie was a beautiful tribute, very respectful and kind.

who are you to say how he would interpret the character. and you're kinda deluded if you think freddy was some kind of angel, they made it clear in the current movie that he could be a huge drunken asshole. SBC is also an asshole, and he's also a good person, and he's also highly animated and artistically on the edge. and he's british. and he looks even more like freddy than the guy they chose, and his ethnicity looks more similar. seems like they missed a great chance. i agree though that making it a biopic would be a bad idea, i think ending it on LIVE AID was perfect - but i think it may have been even better with SBC
@PoderdoCosmos
@PoderdoCosmos 5 жыл бұрын
@@Swoost i agree with you so much. I think he could've been an amazing Freddie. People only see Borat or Bruno and forget that SBC is an actor with also serious roles and a good singer. Who cares if SBC is mean or kind in his real life? He's an actor he wasn't playing himself... I understand why they chose the Live Aid but i don't agree... They had 2 very important concerts to choose from: live Aid (considered the best by many, got Queen back on the map to the USA, made Queen known to a larger portion of people) and Wembley 86 (last live performance of Queen, sold out, made the whole band proud). If they wanted to make the ending with a concert i understand Live Aid but at least be honest and don't make it look like a reunion when they were on tour and had performed together 3 nights before, don't make Freddie tell the band he had aids in 1985 when he didn't even know until 1987.

Monn Aguilar the movie also Glossed over a lot of things, Freddie didn’t leave them to do solo work, they all had side projects but portrayed to look like he abandoned them. There are a lot of things in the movie that happened out of sync, this movie is not a biopic, and the stnical side of me thinks they wanted the movie made so they could continue to make money off Freddie. In the Uk his work has been sold as fuk in jingles to sell toilet cleaner and vacuums!! They were nothing without him and are nothing without him.

The only way this Queen film would work would be if the film's last half an hour was the Tribute Concert to Freddie at Wembley Stadium, where the other band mates get closure over Freddie's death. What would happen in this movie? Adam Lambert joins the band at the end then the credits roll?

I understand both sides of what's going on. Freddie lived a crazy life and ultimately died because of it, very tragic. On the other side, Brian, Roger and John all felt like they had a need to protect and cover for Freddie to respect his privacy. He didnt want anyone knowing about him being sick so I think what Brian and Roger are concerned about, is exactly what Cohen wants to show in the movie. Even Mary Austin, who I believe is the only person on earth, protected him after his death by never revealing where his remains are.
@AA-sn9lz
@AA-sn9lz 5 жыл бұрын
How does the location of his remains, matter in any way? The band members wanted to shelter his image, meaning they didn't respect Freddie's tastes and his likes. So they weren't true friends. If they were they should've stood by him like the family of Andrew Beckett.

I saw Bohemian Rhapsody and it was boring tbh. All of the actors were great, but it did feel like they were protecting something that didn't need protecting. Just show everything....the good, the bad, and the absolutely horrific. Freddie Mercury is synonymous with sex, drugs and rock and roll but this latest film was the disney version of "sex, drugs and rock n roll".

The way they handled Bohemian Rhapsody was fine and didnt need to get into the crazy lifestyle of Mercury, it still showed clips of him having that extravagant crazy lifestyle without the raunchyness.. Cohens version would have been too focused on the crazy parties, gayness and drug aspect of Mercury's life instead of showing more of him in the studio making his music with the band etc. That being said , I wouldn't mind seeing a version about Freddy's crazy lifestyle because he is an interesting person.

In hindsight I kinda feel like this was exaggerated. It was implied here that Sacha was offered the role, then got a meeting and said "hmm... nah im good". If I had to guess I reckon they considered going with Sacha, and the mid-film death was an idea floating around, but neither of them were set in stone. A movie as big as Bohemian Rhapsody I dont see Sacha as a shoe-in, considering he's had mostly flops since Borat.
@eyeCU13
@eyeCU13 6 жыл бұрын
I respectfully disagree with most of you. I suspect Sacha was more interested with the sensational side of Freddie's life, rather than him as a talented musician and an artist. Also as much as I like Sacha Baron Cohen, he is more of a destructive force, he just doesn't have the right energy to play the part. Freddie was a positive character, who brought millions of people together. I think those are things that the other Queen members picked on and therefore they made the right call to look for someone else. Also, a little trust would go a long way in this world. It really baffles me how you wouldn't trust the original band members, Brian and Roger, who were with Freddie from the beginning and were so close to him to the end. Instead you would side with a random actor who never met Freddie in his life, just because he happens to be your favourite actor. Wow what true, genuine, Queen fans you are! I'm sure Freddie would've been proud with you... not! (get it? it's a Borat joke)

eyeCU13 I can see your point here, and I agree. Yeah Freddie was flamboyant and did what a typical “Rock Star” did in the 70/80’s. But there was more to him than the crazy ‘tales’ and wild parties. He was a true Artists in a sense in the recording studio and songwriting process. Plus not to mention, according to those who knew him and in his close circle, he wasn’t really what we saw on stage and in tabloids articles. He was actually quite quiet, reserved, low key when there were no cameras around or wasn’t performing.

I fully agree! I would never want "Borat" to represent Freddie! He is loaded with bad vibes, and no genuine Queen's fan would like to see that. At least Cohen comes clean right from the start: he wanted a movie about Freddie's reckless lifestyle rather than one about his greatness as a musician and singer. Clearly for the sake of scandal, money and who knows what else. Rami Malek is the best choice for the role. He's likable, a great actor, and the trailers already show he is tremendous in Freddie's skin.

eyeCU13 I get what you're saying, but if Sacha is being straight here then it doesn't necessarily seem like it'd be going overboard with the sensational aspect. At the time it seemed like the band wanted it to be half Freddie's life and half Queen. That'd suggest they wanted very tight control over what was going to be shown if they already had the story beats planned out. But in his description it just sounds like he didn't plan to sugarcoat or sterilize Freddie's life. He was going to explore his sexuality as well as the darker sides of him as a person. And according to reviews the film does very little of either. The age rating prevents it from really delving into the darker aspects and they apparently do very little to touch on his bisexuality. The movie could've still shown Freddie as a positive character without glossing over key parts of his life. And touching on his sexuality more could've been even more inspiring to people because at the time he really couldn't talk about it as being gay or bisexual was so heavily demonized around the world.

Yes. After watching this interview I am 300% sure Sacha would have been absolutely perfect for this role. You know what? -- I even notice a lot of parallels in the way he speaks and behaves at interview with how Freddie used to speak and behave. The fact that the Queen biopic didn't have the balls to even go through with this, likely because of the backlash, is honestly embarrassing. The biopic they ended up making was a passable Queen movie, to be fair. About a 6-7/10, and that's being generous given that they seriously watered down Freddie's character. But I personally don't care and wanted to see a biopic that was about Freddie and all the awesome crazy, shit about his life. Since, you know, that legendary walking godman was Queen.
