No it’s the landlords who see all the activity with people moving in from “wealthy areas” and boost rents to take advantage. Most tenants don’t get to negotiate a price for a rental. Rentals aren’t an investment for the renter… so why would they offer to pay more? Misplaced blame.

I have 18 years in real estate and 7 years in property management here in central Sacramento. I have seen this ramp up over the last 3 years. I pulled my license 11/2018, tired of my 1st time local buyers being squeezed out by outsiders over bidding and pushing housing out of reach for the local average buyers. The past 2 years I've watch longtime tenants (usually elderly) forced out of rentals because new owners are refurbishing and raising prices 50% to 100% of previous rents. With the covid-19 pandemic, prices for most established complexes fell for a while. Now as evictions start increasing and folks go back to work, it will be interesting to see just how much rents adjust. We in California have a housing shortage... it is at the center of this ridiculous pricing surge. We need new legislation to ease permit costs and red tape so building is an easier, faster process and more affordable. We need more affordable housing. Period.

I left Sacramento last year in mid October to Oregon and bought a house and I'm saving a dumb amount of money. Love cali, but its not worth living there and barely able to get by month to month with all the insane prices for houses, rent, cars, insurance, gas, and well anything else down there. For example, I now have 2 trucks and pay the same amount for insurance as I was paying for one truck in cali. My mortgage is half of what my rent was down there, which was 1300 and about to go up again to 1400 a month. So yeah, unless you're ballin and have hella money, I'd stay down there. If not, gtfo while you can

Me too. If anything, I'd think rent would drop seeing as the city has went to sh*t. Homeless encampments are everywhere now, violence is crazy and it's an entire population suffering from addiction. There's absolutely no reason for the rent to keep rising, except to push out the working and middle class. They're wrong for what they're doing to hard working people; they're making it impossible to live comfortably.

Politics and housing market are two different things. Rent was high in the early 2000s when Rep. Governator ran California and even Jerry Brown. No matter the party California is always mismanaged which is why it sucks to live there. Housing goes up and so does crime. Sacramento is ran by gangs, drunk drivers, corrupt police, and substance abusers. Yet it's expensive to live there. People need to quit acting like politicians and presidents are the answer to our problems. Or are the cause. We all need to take some personal accountability!

I've seen companies and people with fake names making offers you cant refuse. Even foreigners quarantined overseas surf the web and scoop up properties sight unseen. Supply is at an all time low and people are not buying toilet paper anymore.

Well, when the governor makes it legal to stop paying rent, and landlords are still expected to maintain all financial obligations (property taxes and maintenance), this is what the natural reaction should be. Many were shamefully exploiting the threshold for deferring rent for a year. Landlords are now raising rates to flush out those who were complicit, and welcoming in those who can pay. AND SOMEHOW PEOPLE STILL HAVE DOUBTS ABOUT THE RECALL?!?

I am extremely happy that I purchased my first home in 1999 and it is completely paid off and I now use it as a rental to pay part of the mortgage on the house that I now have. I had a friend of mine who called me the other day and said that they were wondering if they should sell their house because they could get $100,000 more for their home than they paid for it. I explain to my friend that $100,000 will buy you a nice car it’s not life-changing and he is a black guy who wants to have generational wealth so I told him hold onto your current home turn it into a rental buy another home it’s not that hard you can do it and I believe he will do it.$100,000 sounds like a lot of money but it’s really not these days I’m serious that new Ford F150 pick up truck is going to be upwards to $90,000 so 100,000 it’s not that much if you can buy property hold onto the property and eventually the property will help you in your retirement

When I forward them who to contact and all the websites my landlords try to make it seem like it was an income issue on my end which is when I got Tenant Protection Program involved. I forward them all the emails and they handled it from there. Come to find out for each unit my landlord was trying to raise rent that much would’ve caused him a $25,000 fine. They have six units.

I've been looking around and it's gotten crazy. I've been relocated for work but am unwilling to pay those prices. Its just mlm money being thrown down the drain. I wish this housing market will go down because I have over 100,000 in savings ready to buy 2 houses. I'm 30. I gotta have a house at my age but I know the money I put down right now will go to waste if the market drops.

there are 200,000 people a month walking over the border. most of whom have families who are better about taking care of their own than you are, this will only get worse.

This is what happens when you don't have enough protections in place and let “the market” run out of control for something as essential to life as housing. Lifetime residents who don't want to or can't afford to move should not be forced out.

This is what happens when you make it damn near impossible to build more housing. To much red tape.

What does that have to do with rents doubling over the last few years you twit? I paid off my house to but that won't help my son get an affordable apartment.

The same people the government is shouldering with the burden of providing housing for free to it's citizens while they provide massive corporate stimulus?
