Robert E. Lee was often characterized as remote and not given to self-revelation. But that was part of a lifetime pattern, cast by the long shadow of his father, Light-Horse Harry Lee, in which Lee was driven to pursue perfection, independence and security. Only at the end of his life, as president of Washington College, did he bring these pursuits into harmony.

Dr. Guelzo is one of my most favorite speakers. His style & presentation keep me interested & engaged. His knowledge is immense. He never fails to bring thought provoking information. I could listen to him for hours. I truly wish I could take classes with him

He only emancipated those slaves AFTER making them work for a couple years after his father in law died, to pay off the estates debts. And when interviewed after the fact, those slaves referred to him as a particularly cruel and cold man in his treatment of them in that time.

While I admire Dr. Guelzo's obvious knowledge and expertise of various subjects, his apparent bias and sneering dismissal of Lee as a sufficiently worthy subject of deep research reek of leftist elitism. But peace be to him. I cannot abide hearing such a great American so flippantly handled with mocking tones of amusement. Stick to your obvious heroes, Dr. Guelzo. Lee had feet of clay as do all men, but his greatness needs to be remembered, even in such politically correct days of wokeism as that into which we have descended. Lee's instructions to a student after the War constrain me from speaking further. He told him that there was but one rule for the young men of the college: every man must be a gentleman.

"Politically correct days of wokeism." LOL! Frederick Douglass had it right about Lee: “He was a traitor and can be made nothing else.”

Well said. I found Dr. Guelzo's arrogant behavior toward Gen. Lee and his undeniable accomplishments very off-putting. His leftist biases are so obvious it ruins any credibility he may have otherwise been warranted

@@halkahn5035 Abraham Lincoln himself defended the right of any people, at any time, for whatever cause, to secede from the Union. Of course, this was in 1848 before he started a Civil War over Southern secession. 🙄
