ya know, it takes guts to post something so embarrassing, but it really shows the necessary learning process and how everything, especially rollers, are a series of acquired body memory. it's a funny video (in a way) but most importantly, a good learning tool to see the kinds of things that can go wrong and how to keep them in mind when rolling on your own. thank you, excellent video :-)

LOL! Funny video. I learned to ride on rollers using a fixed gear bike and clipless pedals and it wasn't that hard! Tips for you: 1. Ditch the cages for regular flat pedals at least when starting out. 2. Don't over complicate yourself. Ditch the helmet, you are NOT going to die riding rollers LOL! 3. Ditch the air mattress. Instead, use a doorway and set the rollers so that your shoulders are level with the door frame, lean into it when needed. 4. Relax you arms and hands 5. Breathe 6. The only part of your body that should be moving is your hips and legs. Your upper body should be relaxed and still. 7. Look straight ahead or a bit below you straight line of sight (and focus on that spot) 8. Inflate your tires to maximum PSI, this will create less resistance and easier when staring out on rollers. 9. Put some music on and try to have fun. 10. Spin FASTER! The faster you spin, the easier it is to keep a straight balanced line. Good luck!

good tips. Doorways are the best places to use rollers, just place it so that your body is right next to the door frame so you can use your shoulders to hold you up when you lean. adjust the front roller a little bit more forward

One thing to remember when riding rollers is to keep your cadence up. You will be unstable while you are going slow but once you get up to speed the bike and the rollers have a somewhat gyroscopic effect keeping you in the center. Also try to pedal in circles instead of mashing the pedals down. Be smooth on the rollers and soon you will being going faster out on the roads.

if you have to prop an air mattress next to ANY type of trainer to avoid hurting yourself, try again. And, WHY would you keep putting your feet INTO the cages? Flip them over and ride on the underside of the pedals before you go ass over tea kettle and hurt yourself.

Its funny to watch only because i spent hours trying to get used to rollers with lots of swearing and bike throwing. The trick is to keep a higher speed and cadence to keep the bike from swaying. The more confident you are after riding a tad faster will improve your balance on them. The other trick is not to look down at the rollers, this always causes you to wobble and fall. Also your tire pressure is way too low for this to work. Having a low pressure will increase rolling resistance which is not goof for rollers. Pump them up to about 120psi and give it another go. Good luck

The main advantage of rollers over a fixed trainer is that they force you to develop straight line riding skills. The more vertical head tube angle on that bike makes it harder to keep it going straight. Videoing yourself on the bike is a good way to pick out areas to improve upon. In this case, it made for some good entertainment.

@MegaDavedavedavedave
@MegaDavedavedavedave 10 жыл бұрын
TheCrazySquirell haha, wow. How exactly do they fuck your knees up? Baring in mind this is how ALL bikes used to be, also baring in mind that someone riding a normal bike that doesn't stop pedalling or change gear is in the exact same situation - shit, better slap a health warning on all bikes because "the crazy squirell" (you spelled Squirrel wrong) is such a fucking source of knowledge. I'm not saying weather they're faster or not (well, actually they are due to the momentum that is carried through into the pedals from the constant turning of the wheel), but I see no reason that they can't be used outside of the track? If they only belong on the track, then surely that means they're the fastest type of bicycle that there is, otherwise they wouldn't use them in a racing situation? ;) We all know you've not ever ridden a fixie before, so why don't you go out and put some proper miles on a bike before commenting on something that you clearly know nothing about.

Don't give up is my advice. I have built a set of rollers from scratch in my workshop, first time on them was a complete mind feck to be honest. Hold on to something until you gain confidence on them and for fecks sake...don't look down! After five minutes on them i was up and running. It is an exhilarating way to train, especially when the weather outside is shit.

This is obvious. This guy had a problem with balance. It is common behave of children when they learn to ride a bike : If they are falling to one side they pull the handlebars to keep the balance. Rollers are perfect to help you unlearn this. I was able to ride my bike on rollers after 3mins of practice and there is one thing that helped me : Never look on your front wheel, its better to look ahead and only at intervals check if you are still in the middle of the roller :-) And never surrender!

bold efforts. i can relate to this very easily as i had lost part of my co-ordination / motor skills after i had an unrelated car accident. I literary had to start from scratch with my efficient road rising skills and had to completely give up martial arts as I was unable to recover my foot-eye and hand-eye co-ordination and speed. rollers were the right challenge which got me back in the saddle and I have even managed to compete again. . good thinking with the mattress and a supporting wall on one side!! i think, funnily enough, most climbers/boulderering specialists would call it a crash pad? very brave with those old fashioned clip/strap pedals the key is to relax shoulders and arms and let the bike be controlled more from the pelvic girdle rather than by arms, most people whether competitive or recreational cyclists try to steer predominantly with their hands and arms and stiffness of their torso creates a tense link to the handle bars which in turn then destroys the straight line and challenges balances + wastes a lot of energy which could be concentrated on the forward propelling

When I was a kid I had a bike that the chain guard was missing. It was easy to take the chain right off the front gear wheel out of the way. Sometimes we would invent competitions and one of them was to stay up on that bike without moving but you had to pedal, and see who could balance the longest. I imagine using the rollers is a lot like that. P.S. the contest was abandoned after the first day :P

For all you beginners out there, if you've just bought rollers or are saving up for some, try cycling with no handlebars as it helps balancing on a bike, obviously not on a main road or anything, but find a quiet road and try to ride straight, really will help when you first step on one of these things :)

The purpose of a roller vs a standard trainer is for control of the bike as well as getting miles/kilometers in. The big thing is that it teaches the rider to keep a straight line while riding and more control in doing so. It's considered to be a waste of energy when competing to be swaying too much in your cadence. That and yeah, it is nice to have when it's rainy, snowy, or just nasty out.

Doing it on the rollers is tougher, but you'll get the hang of it. Don't look at the front wheel -- look ahead and try to feel how stable you are. Don't steer the bars at all -- just use your weight and smoothness to guide the bike. As you start, you might want to skip using the toe clips and straps and pedal flat. This will help you get the hand of the rollers and get your stroke a little smoother before you commit to riding harder.

This aint so bad. No catastrophic falls at least. I would bring the rollers a little further away from the wall and adjust the front roller forward 12-25mm. That he's riding on a singlespeed doesn't help much. Yes, FULL tire pressure. First time I tried my rollers there was a puddle of sweat below me not from the exertion, but from trying to focus. The trick is to get it up to speed, pedal full circles, and relax the upper body (hands, arms, shoulders)

Tyres looked like they needed more air, that would make it harder if not pumped up hard. And when you first start and don't have the balance, do it up against a bench, or a solid chair that is about your handle bar height. It will feel a lot more co for table than up against a wall. More speed also makes it easier to keep a straight line.

There are ways to eventually do it successfully on 1st try. If you have good handling on bikes, you will maybe have more chance on this. Do not cleat in yet or use toeclips for 1st time, it will just make you more nervous. Then don't hold the handlebar too tightly. Don't think of falling down and start pedaling slowly, you dont want to start fast. Take it easy till you get comfortable with it!
@1stPlaceDirector
@1stPlaceDirector 11 жыл бұрын
There is a trick to it, and that is that you need to have the wheels spinning fast. That causes the gyroscopic effect of the spinning wheels to help keep the bike in line and upright. Also, it helps to keep the bike straight in line. I can ride them with no hands and can ride for hours without looking. It's like learning to ride a bike again. It's hard to go fast at first because people fear crashing, but the speed doesn't really matter much, because you are really stationary when you fall.
