In this clip: This is a flavour of the littlest chick's last day. S/he did get some fish but was weak after two days of cold wet weather, no fish, and stress from aggression by the middle chick. The chick was caught out in pouring rain and too weak to crawl under mum, or get out of the way of a huge fish delivery, and although four fish were delivered, it was too late for the little one who finally succumbed at 19.02.
RIP little bob hatched 24th May, died 16th June at 24 days old.

Brief history of the nests:
2016 Woodland Trust acquire the Loch Arkaig ancient Caledonian rainforest remnant and manage it in partnership with Arkaig Community Forest.
2017 A nest cam is installed on a refurbished Osprey nest. A young male Louis and a young female Aila take up residence and raise one male chick to fledging: Lachlan JH4. 2018 Louis & Aila return but a Pine Marten steals all their eggs.
2019 Louis & Aila return and raise two female chicks to fledging: Mallie JJ0 and Rannoch JJ2.
2020 Louis & Aila return and raise two male and one female chicks to fledging: Doddie JJ6; Vera JJ8 and Captain JJ7.
2021 Louis returns but sadly Aila doesn't. Louis takes up residence on a new nest with a new mate Dorcha and they raise two male chicks to fledging: Aspen LW3 and Alder LW4. This is designated Nest Two, no one takes up residence on Nest One.
2022 Woodland Trust install a nest cam on Nest Two. Louis & Dorcha return and raise two female chicks to fledging: Willow LW5 and Sarafina LW6. Still no residents on Nest One.
2023 Louis & Dorcha return, and raise one male chicks to fledging: Ludo LY7. No residents on Nest One but male Garry LV0 spent a lot of time flirting with Affric 152 despite her mate Prince still being around.
The Woodland Trust nest cam was installed by Wildlife Windows in Arkaig Community Forest, it is funded by The People's Postcode Lottery and operates on wifi provided by Locheilnet. Watch the livestream 24/7.

😢 so sad it was right there begging for food in front of her,poor thing,😮 sad day makes me weep life not not fair. For the little one was so picked on. Dam all

Sadly that's where we get the phrase 'the pecking order' from. The biggest and strongest always dominate the smallest and weakest, and that combined with unseasonal wet and cold weather and low food intake, was too much for chick3 to overcome.

Condolences @Geemeff & everybirdy here ❤ Wee chick 3 was weakened by sad combination of circumstances, in the end too weak to stand or move. Every bird is a miracle to me , after fighting way out of shell , to find a pecking order with siblings. Chick 3 never got to the stage his siblings did. That final freezing night & exposure to rain didn't help. No more suffering Chick 3 ❤ We know that's not you in that body anymore > Fly high fellow Soul 🌠

That’s what I have noticed before with Osprey moms..they seem to feed who comes to her..unlike eagles who feed all.

Yes, I also watch Bald Eagles & they seem to have different family dynamic, perhaps bigger vocabulary too. Usually both Eagle Parents like to feed chicks & make sure all get something, even stopping squabbles in cases. Sadly not the Osprey way, although Louis did feed them some when they were newly hatched. Sorry for Jackie & Shadow at BB , chickless again this year.

Some eagles, not all. The Imperial Eagle of Europe is an obligate siblicide, which means the older always kills the younger. It's also referred to as cainism, after Cain and Abel in the bible. In an experiment a younger eaglet - Abel - was placed in a nest with another eaglet younger than itself, and it immediately took on the Cain role, and killed the little eaglet. This surprised some researchers who'd thought being an Abel from the first nest meant it would still act as Abel in the second nest. But it immediately became the Cain figure, showing just how hard-wired their instincts are.

Abel became Cain when put in another nest with a younger Cain , survival of the biggest , fascinating information. All part of their DNA built up over the ages. Do you still have your bearded lizard ? I remember it was very pretty.

Osprey parents seem a bit lacking in parenting compared to other birds of prey 😢. The exception is Luis for his incredible fisher skills.

So sad and preventable if Dorcha had fed all the chicks instead of the pushy aggressive one."The meek shall inherit the Earth".....sadly not in this case.😢

This shows such a basic misunderstanding of bird behaviour. All Dorcha is responding to is an open beak - the body behind it might as well not be there. Just think about how a cuckoo chick gets fed at the expense of the host chicks.. What happened was not preventable, it just happens.

Yes that’s true she was just feeding the open mouths..yet I have noticed over decades of watching Osprey nests..if there are 3 babies..generally that #3 does not make it..I have seen a mom push the weakling close to the edge of the nest,so she doesn’t have to contend with it..that’s how nature survives.or not.

It’s obvious every couple have different ways of dealing with their young. Dorcha did for the most part during the early feeding ignore 3’s wide open mouth while feeding the dominant one. I’ve seen the male help with feeding especially the #3 chick on occasion at some nests. The combination in this 24 to 36 hour period of unforeseen circumstances not the least of which was not the usual number of daily fish, weather was terrible and thanks to that the dominant one was even more so when fish finally arrived. Wee 3 ultimately succumbed to a very unfortunate set of circumstances. Feeling sad!

It will gradually get "lost" in the nest poss pushed under the sticks. They will deffo NOT eat it. Poor wee thing, rip Bob 3 x x
