Sada Yacco, or Sadayakko was a highly successful Geisha in the late 19th century. She married the popular actor Otojiro Kawakami, and accompanied him and his acting troupe on two worldwide tours, bringing Japanese traditional theatre to the west for the first time.
She became an even bigger star than her husband in the west, and had an enduring affect on the world of art and theatre.
Most of the information in this video comes from Lesley Downer's fascinating book, Madame Sadayakko: the Geisha who Bewitched the West, which I highly recommend reading!

What an amazing woman, and what an amazing life! She created so much love, admiration, beauty and talent! She was a world known woman with a star like quality. She had extreme highs and lows in her lifetime, but at the end of her life basically died alone with no fanfare or recognition. Wow! Thank you for this intriguing story!❤

What a story! What a life! I really enjoyed this, someone I have never heard of, had no idea Sada inspired Madame Butterfly and Ruth St. Denis. Wonderful research on your part, great photos. Further proof that history is skewed, as there are so many persons of historical significance who remain commonly unknown. Also amazing is how many women were indeed free thinkers and free spirits long before organized feminism "told" them to be. Loved the detail about the red motorcycle, but not so much having a sumo wrestler as a lover! Many Thanks!

I can see aspects of her life that ended up in “Memoirs of a Geisha”. She was certainly not your typical geisha.

Such a vivid telling of such an interesting life. Thank you so much! You have such a wonderful talent for storytelling. Would it be possible to add subtitles so I can share this with my mother who is hard of hearing? Look forward to your next video!
