Performance from Bravas Club in 1991. This song also known as " Bird of Paradise" by famous C.Parker performance. This S.Watanabe play is also great. (Drums' Harvey Mason. Guiter; Perry Hughes, Organ; Ronny Foster)

Watanabe had his sax lesson right after mine at Berklee. I always loved his playing.

What a lovely way to present the theme melody. Sadao's sax sound got much richer around this period from a somewhat squeaky thin one.

Classic example of someone who's already past their mid-life, but has some of the freshest playing out there!

I attended Berklee College of Music at the same time as both Sadao San and Harvey Mason. They are both great jazz innovators each in their own right. Some 50 years later I find it interesting ... the melody and chord changes are approached in a linear way. Today, jazz education has become structured in a more vertical way with respect to improvisation. The melody and soul are lost. These guys are great!

Thom Pastor I agree...I hardly hear melodies in most song, just improvisation..nevertheless,I’ll take that over mainstream music, any day

Hi. Could you please explain what linear and vertical improvisation is. Thank you.

@@claragary Vertical improvisation improvises more on the chords while linear improvisation sticks to the melody.

I feel very sorry for your Berklee stint because the older I get the more I got angry for the 4 years I wasted at Berklee !

Couldn't agree more. There are amazing musicians today but very few artists you want to actually listen to. Melody and soul trumps shredding for me any day.
Great. Been a fan of his ever since the trib to charlie parker album. And that was some years ago :)
