As for the time it takes to actually speedrun, here's an example of how long it can take: Goldeneye 64 has a lot of short levels. Sometimes, even top runners have to play 100s of hours of a 2min mission just to save 1 second of it. I can't imagine how long it would take for a normal person to even get close to that.

The paper Mario double jump skipped 3 chapters out of 8. It saves a lot of time. I believe on the Japanese version you can do a glitch in the main town to get an item you’re supposed to get at the start of chapter 7, so it’s 6 chapters skipped if I remember correctly. That’s a ton of time if you think about the cutscenes and fights and stuff

I learned half life the original through speedrunning, didn't have a pc when I was young and loved the runs for the game, I never got a score that was competitive but never played the game through normally until recently, took me a few days to know the skills, and get the pathing down, but after learning the pathing and core skills it's just rinse and repeat and slowly getting better
