Saddle height is one of the first things to be addressed in many bike fits. This cyclist was a great example of how we can be 98% of the way "there" on our fit and that last 2% might cause us a lot of trouble.
Luckily I was able to catch this before we had finished and we got his saddle height nailed down.

Yo, I wanna give props to the doc! I had my bike seat covered with multiple types of padding which I found to make my perineum hurt. I removed the paddings, lowered my seat & rode smooth as hell!! Thanks man.

A very good demonstration how important saddle pressure monitoring is.Solved a problem for me which an experienced fitter who did not have the equipment could not solve.All Pro Teams use them.

Thank you. Last week I moved my cleats backwards because my feet were painful. But I was not feeling well on my bike after that. I 'll lower my saddle as you did with your client.

So a thicker or thinner pad in the shorts is going to make a big difference. It starts to get a bit mad then. Unless you get only one type of shorts.

I had to drop my saddle 3-4mm after buying new shoes as I was getting foof pain and saddle sores. I later replaced the seat, which was stiffer and had to drop the saddle again 2mm. It's such a fine line getting it right when running at max height.

I do understand these fits come from the perspective of achieving maximum comfort on the bike. However, are there any losses in terms of performance? Perhaps it would be interesting and useful to quantify any gains or losses in terms of performance that come with such adjustments.
@RelentlessC2C
@RelentlessC2C 7 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I tend to avoid making compensatory changes, because it becomes very difficult to link cause and effect. If I adjust my cleats I leave everything else alone until I have done some miles. Keeping a diary of adjustments and symptoms is a great idea though. I should start doing that.
@bikefitadviser7012
@bikefitadviser7012 7 жыл бұрын
RelentlessC2C Yes, it's not always beneficial to make compensatory changes...in this case I had the benefit of some measurement feedback as well that made it clear this saddle height would probably be necessary. Caution should be taken to go slow through changes so as not to "overshoot" the problem.

I didn't know how critical cleat position was until i bought a new bike & new shoes, the shop guy did a bike fit and set my cleats back, ( about 1/2' back from where they were on the old shoes) After 3 weeks i was starting to hobble about & people were asking what injury i had ??? I switched back to the old shoes & did some stretching before each ride after 2 weeks i was walking normal again................Rules of Thumb don't work for everybody and i now know to stick with what works...............If it ain't broke.................

Cleats all the way back! And if using toe clips, make sure you get the large / xlarge so that the correct part of your foot is over the spindle. Severe pain now eliminated by buying larger toe clips - no longer pushing with numb toes. Had to buy toe clips one size larger than shoe size indicated

nice video! but iam wondering how could i know that my saddle height needs that 5 mm adjustment? Because most people dont have the equipment to know the pressure on saddle. My question can also be put like this:how should i set my saddle height roughly and adjust it to the right presure? does the method "inseam length - 10cm" work? hope you can reply me, and again, thank you for the nice video!

John, really good tip! Always had problems with pain in my hands during my ultra-endurance rides and with Transcontinental Race around the corner, I really thought that would be a problem. After this video I lowered my saddle for about 4-5mm and I think that I am having less pressure on my hands during a ride. More shifted backwards to the saddle, which is not a problem. So this looks to work out very good for me. Just wanted to let you know. Thanks!!!

It's informative to know how a minute change affected saddle pressure, and to be cognizant of that fact. But the title of the video is misleading. I thought I would get information on how I could dial my saddle in. Apparently, it's possible only with the serious equipment he utilizes in the video.
@BMH1965

Just by looking the front shot at the beginning of the video you can see that the rider is rolling on the saddle. And if you reduce the saddle height you should have lowered the handlebar height. Just basic stuff.

Boy, I guess I'm making every mistake in the book. I wear worn sneakers with no cleats, my rat traps broke 35 years ago and I never got around to replacing them. My old skinny seat hurt me so I bought a big padded monster with springs. But I'm almost 70 and I still ride my 50 year old Fuji five mornings weekly.

I love having your videos as a resource, thank you! I am having some discomfort especially the day after I ride at the very top of both of my knee caps, maybe a hair to the inside. I wonder if I should scoot my aft back a bit? I raised my seat a hair and that seemed to help a little bit but longer, mostly seated rides are causing me discomfort there. All mountain biking. I'd love your thoughts and which video you'd point me to. Thanks!

I have the same problem with the pain in the knee caps and have had it for a month, it's to the point bending down or even longish rides is really painful. Yesterday i changed the saddle height with the following link. www.ebicycles.com/bicycle-tools/saddle-height So far the pain has gone from around 80% to 40% and i feel much better, taking a break from riding for a few days and then carrying on to see how it feels and if it has stopped it if not then refer back to the guide till i hit the sweet spot. Only thing left to work on is the hand bars height, position of the seat IE how forward or backwards i need it and to get the right seat for me. The videos are a great help though :)
@ReviewChick
@ReviewChick 6 жыл бұрын
I feel your pain! I raised my seat up 1/4 inch and then another 1/4 inch and the pain is MUCH better but still feels like an adjustment needs to be made. I've tried moving my seat forward, back etc... as well. When my reach is most comfortable and my seat height is correct, I feel like my pedal stroke when parallel to the ground, that the ball of my foot/center of pedal is too far past my knee. In other words, if I were to the the pendulum thing from my knee cap, it would set about an inch short of center pedal so I'm extending my feet too far still. I don't know if that makes sense, seems like if I got shorter cranks maybe that would solve it? Good luck, please replay if you discover any solutions or causes! ;)

Gareth Woodall The best we can sometimes hope for without measurement technology is to be cautious with our adjustments and then assess over a couple rides. Even with fancy bike fit tech, I still recommend to riders that we often halt some of our changes in order to just ride for a week or two to be able to see how the body settles.

Hello John. I would like to ask you about a little issue i don´t find the information anywhere: I recently bought a road bike which bike shop guys fitted to me. Until that moment i realized I was always riding with my saddle lower as i needed to have it. I felt in the beginning that it was a little bit high for me. In that possition i felt that my seat bones were in the right place but i felt like in tiptoes when i was pedalling and a little bit unconfortable, as my hips were rocking a little bit. The first ride with that position was 95 km and i felt my calves more overload than my cuadriceps. They told me if i low the saddle didn´t do more than 3mm, That is what a I did and also i moved back my clips a little bit. I feel more confortable and efficient, but i feel my seat bones are forward where they have to be placed. Another thing is that in the higher possition i am slower, but my calves work in all it´s extension. In the "lower" position I think they doesn´t reach it. I know is very difficult to explain things like this, but I am sure with your experience know what i am talking. Thank you for your information.

Hello John (+Bike FIt Adviser)i have one question regarding bike fitt and saddle height.Sometimes when i go on a ride my left arm start to hurt(in my palm) and i notice that my left hip is moving forward on the saddle.This is saddle problem or is something else?
@bikefitadviser7012
@bikefitadviser7012 7 жыл бұрын
Ionut-Lucian Coman The hips can draw forward for a variety of reasons and generally I would put the saddle itself fairly low on the list. Instead I usually find better results looking at the movement restrictions or limitations that the rider has -- tight muscle groups, weak areas, restricted joints, that sort of thing -- that are pushing or pulling the rider off kilter on the saddle. Good luck!

Bike Fit Adviser okay thanks... I'm always super curious about that; rider height and how it's correlated to frame size. I humbly request a video on frame size and arm length as well as inseam length, insofar as how it is or isn't correlated in your opinion. None of the bike fitters seem to think it matters all that much and routinely sort of posture like, well, no matter your height and measurements you can be fitted to any bike! I would agree up to a point with them on that personally, but only in the case of bikes being on the smaller end.

The industry needs to stop quoting stack and reach as the only two fundamentals in transferable bike fitting. This isn't enough because it has no datum. You really need to include the third and most important variable, seat tube angle, to know where abouts you reach lies with respect to the BB.

Since my saddle is rather low for my inseam length (90 cm vs. 80 cm) I wondered whether this has got somesthing to do with my cleat position which I thought was a litte bit towards the middle of my foot. Yesterday I adjusted my cleats about 1.5 mm to the forefoot and increased saddle height by 2 mm. I am unsure, whether I should keep this position and try to adapt as it felt slightly unsual yesterday. Could you please comment on the influence of cleat position on pedal stroke, saddle height, etc. in general?
@bikefitadviser7012
@bikefitadviser7012 7 жыл бұрын
ju_no_hands That's a really good question....and it has a pretty extensive answer. A few points: Cleat position can affect the angle that we posture our foot at -- which then affects the amount our knee flexes and extends through the pedal stroke (not to mention the affect it has on the activity of the intrinsic foot muscles and the pressure placed on different areas of the feet. There's a chance that having the cleats further forward may stimulate the use of the quads over the hip extensors changing our muscle recruitment as well. I will do a video on this at some point but it's going to take some work because I want to keep it succinct (and this is a topic that could get out of hand quickly.
@jondashun

@Bike Fit Adviser: Thank you so much for your answer. I left the cleats a little bit further forward and feel comfortable with this position now. I also moved the saddle slightly further to the back. Yesterday I did my first long ride (7,5 h, 220 km, 3000 m of climbing) with the "new" position and felt more and more comfortable the longer I was riding. While going hard on one climb, I felt that in my left foot different muscles were activated and getting tired. My left ankle and knee was also put into another position but I do not know whether this is because the position of my left hip changed or if this provoked my left hip to move. I also had the impression that I did not only use my quads better but also my glutes. Today I moved my saddle about 5 mm forward and did not feel overly comfortable. Had some lower back discomfort, the position felt too short and my left knee moved further inwards compared to before. I guess I should seek professional help... ;-)
