In this video, Poppy Webber BSc (Hons), MA, SMS QSF talks through what makes a ‘cob’ saddle... and what the wider horses need in terms of saddle.
Filmed during lockdown, and video bombed by a fluffy puppy, this video is perfect for cob owners, puppy lovers, horse riders, and bad hair lovers.
If you have any ideas for future videos, please comment below.

Thank you, this video makes so much sense! Now to find a saddle fitter in my area, who understands the flat backed, short backed, forward girth groove cob!

My daughter has a very wide no wither Welsh c...we have spent years trying to find a saddle that did not move and fit properly, the best we found was an older style silhouette working hunter saddle that was 11.5 inch d to d lol....then it started moving because she lost weight...now we use a very expensive treeless saddle it's fantastic xxxx easytrek;) ;) lol

Hi, loved the video. Very informative; I have a question please. My horse is what I would call a fairly lightweight cob, not necessarily barrel shaped all the way through his body. He has wide sprung ribs bit is quite fit and lean with a fairly good length of back. Big shoulders but doesn't usually carry much belly. I have a PeeWee GP saddle which fits beautifully. I also have an Ideal AST dressage saddle which fits me well but I appreciate the difference in the shape of the trees between these two saddles, and that the tree on my dressage saddle is possibly no longer the best for him now he has achieved his more adult physical shape. Here's the question...I now know that the C&H tree suits him well but...as a "mature" rider with arthritic hips and back I found a dressage saddle on a C&H tree was just too wide for me through the twist. Is there a solution to this please?
@ADayInTheLifeOfASaddleFitter
@ADayInTheLifeOfASaddleFitter 4 жыл бұрын
It could be that when it's in a dressage saddle, the way they're designed to make you sit (think old fashioned clothes peg) means your hip flexors are really opened - so on a wide twisted saddle/wide ribbed horse, this can be even more noticeable. There are things that can be done at manufacture to narrow the feel of the twist, or the knee blocks can be angled to allow your leg to have a little more bend in them, therefore not forcing the hips quite so 'open'. If that makes sense?

I am struggling with my friesian mare. One saddler just huffed about her and told me to call her after lunging for three months in the hope that her shape would change. I have a Kent and Masters saddle but it lifts up at the back as the tree is not flat enough. I subsequently rode in it and it slipped around during a schooling session and I fell off and broke my pelvis. I am now after any suggestions on how to stop a saddle slipping. I have bout non slip gel girth and anti slip saddle pads. Do you have any other suggestions? I want to ride dressage and need a saddle that has good external knee blockers and a secure deep seat…a lot of the cob saddles are not right for my discipline.

I love your videos. I volunteer at an RDA (therapy riding) centre and we have a very round pony (and quite fat), absolutely NO withers either. Her current saddle slips on her especially when an unbalanced kid ride's her. Sadly RDA is a charity and rely on donations so we can't buy amazing fitting saddles, we have to work with what we have. Not sure if you know this brand as it is Australian, "Southern Stars", that's her saddle, it is adjustable in the front. Are there any tips to help stabilise the saddle?

Do you happen to know the saddle fits the pony? And how many girth straps it has?
@poniesatemypencils
@poniesatemypencils 3 жыл бұрын
@@ADayInTheLifeOfASaddleFitter It looks like a low profile saddle, like has a fairly flat tree. Adjustable in the front. Usually has 3 billet straps, but it was changed to 2 long billets a while ago. This pony easily gets fat pockets where the tree points go. Round ponies are a nightmare.

Do you know if you can get a saddle fitter like you in Germany? Or at least these saddles?
@ADayInTheLifeOfASaddleFitter
@ADayInTheLifeOfASaddleFitter 4 жыл бұрын
I am sure you can. The Society Of Master Saddlers - who I trained with- have lots of overseas qualified fitters, including Germany. If you pop along to their website www.mastersaddlers.co.uk there should be details of saddle fitters on there. And if not, they’re super helpful to call and speak to. Good luck! X

Is a 14.2 hand high horse considered a cob?? And also I’ve been wanting to get her a saddle but idk what size she is Because when I go to purchase one it says the size like 17 18 or 19 and I have no clue what that means but I don’t want to get the wrong saddle and spend all that money. If you guys know what I’m talking about please comment on this and please help me lol Ty!

a cob is a 'type' of horse/pony - one that's usually very chunky - like the ones in the thumbnail for this video The length of the saddle is what people mean when they talk about a 17"/18"... but you also need to consider the width, the shape, and the panels etc. So you really need a saddle fitter to help you. They should also bring some saddles for you to try so you can see which ones you're the most comfy in, as well as the ones that fit your pony the best.

What about wide horses with defined withers?
@ADayInTheLifeOfASaddleFitter
@ADayInTheLifeOfASaddleFitter 4 жыл бұрын
They would probably still need the broad panels. But a different shape at the ‘head’ (the front). They’re often a tricky type to fit for that reason but not impossible. It depends a lot on how broad and tall the withers are. :)

I have a young QH with a broad flat back and well defined withers. I bought a thorowgood dressage cob saddle and it seems to fit her perfectly so far. It also fits my extremely round mutton withered APHA mare (once I switch out gullet plates). I will be saving up to invest in a better saddle down the road, but I think this one will give us plenty of good service.

sometimes we can narrow the twist on the saddle for the rider, but it still has to fit over the horse's back so it can be a bit tricky
