The most evolved school of thought in Hinduism is Adwaita Philosophy (Adwaita mean non-dual). According to them, the whole universe is a manifestation of the one and the same thing. Man, animal, matter, energy anything everything you name is the manifestation of the same thing. Those who follow or at least interested in this school of thought are free not to believe until you realize it yourself. There are mainly 4 different approaches to realize this truth (or even you are free to find your own way). The 4 main methods are Karmayoga (by selfless work), Bhaktiyoga (by selfless devotion), Jnanayoga (through knowledge) and through Rajayoga (by controlling mind). Shri Sadguru has mainly chosen the last approach. If you are a skeptic and interested in eastern philosophy then "Tao of Physics" by physicist Fritjof Capra will be a good start. Then try " The complete works of Swami Vivekananda" (ateast first 2 volumes). Let me warn, you will obviously go across ideas which are not in tune with science. Because here the topic of investigation is not the materialistic world

I recommend you to read that too as I find his work very impressive. One important thing is that we should read one completely before forming our opinion and judgement whether we agree with him or not when we start reading. So I will suggest that you should continue reading till the end before passing your final verdict.

that does not mean you have to reject the knowledge in the vedas - or the fact that this was and is a part of the hindu culture. THat is only a statement of truth. You should not Identify with it. But that does not change the fact that hindus have though about these topics for millenia and the knowledge was stated in the vedas and upanishads. It is almost as if you have to trash hindu culture and when you have done that enough, you have proved that one is not "identified" with it. THat is not the correct way of "not identifying" ....
