This video discusses the restoring, repairing and testing of a vintage SAE 2400 stereo power amplifier The SAE 2400 power amplifier is a fine example of the golden era of old school stereo equipment. Being designed and built in the USA this SAE 2400's 200 watts per channel into 8 ohms is more then enough power for most speakers and the people who listen to them. I'm never disappointed with this SAE amplifier when I have it installed in one of my systems.

One of late James Bongiorno's masterpieces. I still own a 2201 that I bought brand new and a completely restored MK31b, I revere both and both rival much more expensive contemporary power amps. I'm also proud to own James' last masterpiece, the Ampzilla 2000.

Some loved McIntosh, but I loved SAE. I have an 8000 FM tuner, most of its life, it's been ON. Built like that 2400....a tank,,,with specs that LASTED, unlike this stuff they peddle today. My late friend Don, had the 300/channel model. Love those "air conditioner" cords they used. She could pull some current when needed

My favorite amplifier in my life. I feel bad that I sold it in the 90s. It effortlessly ran my Gale 401c's with the chrome endcaps. Best overall system ever. Still have the Gales, they need some attention. Great video about a great amp.

I take 24 VDC fans and hook them up to old AC to DC converters from deceased cordless phones or other devices. The 5 volt adapters make the fan run very slow and the 12 volt adapters make them run much quicker. These fans are from junked copy machines that I used to work on. They are very quiet. I hook them up to the switched AC outlet on the back of the amps.

The fan says "impedance protected" on the label. That means it's perfectly fine to run at a lower voltage. Some AC motors will burn out on low voltage because the winding impedance falls with voltage and the current goes up. But most of these small 120vac fans are impedance protected. Interesting fact: Lowering the voltage on an AC induction motor really doesn't change the speed. The motor speed is determined by the AC frequency. This is why big motor speed controls these days in the tens of horse power range and up are variable frequency drive -VFD. But lowering the voltage on an AC induction motor does lower the torque. So as the torque falls the mechanical load on the motor, in this case moving air, slows it down. Resistors or transformers are fine for small fans. What you don;t want are SCR or TRIAC based speed controls. These produce a lot of RFI and EMI.

Beautiful piece. Have you tried a low noise fan ? They cost a bit more but well worth it. I put one in my diy power amp and i can barely hear it, although its dealing with a lot less heat than what you're dealing with there.

Can you share with us the dismantling order of the amp so as to get into it to replace the lamps? There is no info in any SAE service manual or on any forums. Seeing the way this amp i put together leaves one to wonder where to start. Thanks!

I am going to redo the amp board on a Sansui 1000x. What kind of thermal compound do you use, and how do I determine the size of the insulators. Thanks and you're inspiring me to take small steps getting some gear back up and going.
@vintageaudioaddict
@vintageaudioaddict 2 жыл бұрын
I use Wakefield type 120 silicone thermal compound and the mica insulators are type T03 for the SAE 2400. These are available at mouser.com. Good luck with your projects.

So I’m repairing an SAE 2400, and just have a quick question. I’m doing a full recap of the unit. I’ve taken everything apart quite methodically, and heve come across something strange, the output transistors that are mounted to the heat sink are labeled SAE 1, and SAE 2 on the left and right channels. Looking at the heat sink from the top and back of the unit. The transistors on the left side are ( from back to front) 1,1,2,2. The right side ( from back to front) 2,2,1,1. Is this correct?? Are the transistors different in some way? I thought they would be all the same. This is the way it came to me, it looks original,
