Quick video on two Safariland holsters and why I prefer the DO over the RDS. Overall they are both really good options it comes down to what you need the holster to do. I prefer the DO but if you need a thumb guard and some of the other features the RDS has to offer it's still a great option. If you want to see more on the holsters or an in-depth video going over my belt let me know down below! Thanks for watching as always!

Just a heads up for all the people in the comments this is strictly to the holster he has I have one in both models and so do two of my friends and after removing the optic hood and the thumb guard if you want they feel identical to the DO we all actually prefer the RDS because once the spring system is broken in it’s actually a smoother draw and you have the extra protection and you can get the holster $35 cheaper than the DO with the mid ride belt option from BDU. By the way we have Glock 19 with Holosun 507 and the compact model with olight pl-pro. I think you got a stiff one or maybe just out of spec a bit.

I had no experience with safariland. I order rds for my g19. After I saw Your video. Fuck. I made a huge mistake. Especially that in my country it is veeeeery expensive. But when it come I found I have no any issue with it. Thumb guard I remove immediately. But the locking lever is for me perfect. Super natural to disengage. As a new to safariland I can say all this system works just perfect for me.

I bought a 3d printed barrel stop for my 6354DO, im using a glock 19 with a small carry comp on it and it works good. It helps keep the rigidity and structure of the holster together while allowing clearance for my comp. (its made by Hugo Industries)

@@RedactedGear I think this will be likely putting a 5th gen 4-5 into a rig built for a gen 4 19. What is SL doing? They make these to order, why not design 5th gen holsters? All it would take is tweaking their molds. Do not get it.

I too had both holsters and absolutely hated the 6390 so much so that I sold it (I feel bad for the guy in CA that bought it, but hey, he got it dirt cheap on eBay from me). I have a Glock 19 w/ a threaded barrel that is the exact same length as a g17 due to the threaded barrel. That being said, in the 6390 the gun would literally get stuck in the holster. I loosened the retention nut as loose as it would get and the gun would still jam and not release. So frustrating that Safariland changed the design of the 6354 DO’s! Great video!

I got a 6360 rds (level 3) with my first safariland holster being a 7 series holster. I find the rds holsters perfectly fine. I think it's mostly a training issue. If you like the 6354, that's fine. Though I would urge you to stress that it's a personal preference issue, not a holster issue.

There isn’t anything wrong with the 6390, I find it to be a good holster just not for me.. my personal gripe with the holster is that my personal holster experiences a lot of lock ups if any amount of upward pressure at all is applied to the holster, my 6354 will still let go of the gun with upward pressure applied before the initial button press. Thats my only issue with the 6390 thats an actual mechanical issue. I dont like the size of the 6390 but thats a personal thing

It should work as long as the gen5 glock 17’s have no real dimensional changes or size differences. I use the tlr1-hl in the DO holster and they work just fine, you may just need to tighten the screw at the bottom side of the holster to tighten the draw / kydex around the light

I hate that the new ones have the qls mounting screws halfway down the holster. There’s some RDS’s that have the three screw holes up higher where they used to be. With most of them with the qls way lower even if I’m using a low ride it ends up being a mid ride or higher. Side note you can still attach the qls high on new RDS’s but it gives me massive ocd that you can only use 2 out of 3 screws to secure it.

Would a G19 with a x300 be able to work in the 17 holster, or would it fall in to deep to draw properly? Also as far as the stiffness of the new holster, used to run the SLS at work and whenever we’d get a new holster we’d sit there and work the bail back and forth for an hour or 2 to loosen it up. It might work for the ALS.

It looks like a lot of places are running sales on the holsters so I would definitely hop on while the sales are going on. The RDS is a super solid option I have just found troubles with the slight raise on the thumb "switch" not allowing for as much of a comfortable draw compared to the DO. I have seen 6354’s fit acros with very little modification, Id recommend trying it with heat and kind of reforming the hood, and if it needs more “frontal” clearance to take a cut off wheel to the front portion just in front of the hood on the actual holster (part that sits right above the ejection port) if that makes sense. Not sure how a P2 would change any of that as I know its sized a little different

I have the 6354do and it's a great holster, with one issue that I solved with a Dremmel. I have run any one of three pistols in it. G19 gen 3, Polymer 80, and a G19x. Putting the same gen 3 slide with a Vortex Venom on each one, the Venom bottomed out in the red dot hood before the pistol would lock in. I shaved it down as far as I could and it's good now. But for the money, I was pretty disappointed that I had to do that.

The placement of the als on the 6390 rds holster is to aid in gaining a higher purchase of the grip upon draw . I have both & like both . It's a training , muscle memory issue . My department only allows level 3 holsters for uniformed duty carry & 99% of the time I'm in uniform (school protection) . I do like the look of the DO better & prefer the DO when I work off duty private overt gigs . It's just really about getting rep's on the 6390 rds

After I explained to Safariland's customer service that school was starting in a few days and I really needed that holster and I would do whatever they wanted me to do they said "No worries , a new one is on the way " . Also I bought both through optactical, RDS was 185 in Feb '21, DO was 133 in August '19 both before shipping. RDS didn't come with the fork either. RDS was very tight at first but seems better now after use. I didn't adjust anything on either one because i never bothered looking into it. The DO seems very loose but it is a smoother draw for sure. It seems like the RDS internals are tight. They are my first Safariland holsters, so I don't have much to compare too other Safarilands but I can compare to a couple T-Rex Ragnaroks and they are great holsters too, but I seem to like the draw better on the Safariland DO. They have been discontinued by Safariland. New/old stock pops up from time to time. The 6-series and 7-series RDS options are the manufacturer replacement units. By the Nub-Mod for the newer RDS and call it a day.

If you don’t run optics running a DO or RDS makes little sense given that the price is much higher for both the RDS and DO over the slick slide models. Tbh if you want the cordura wrap, go through RDR Gear and get a custom wrapped model for $180. I have the DO, RDS, and 7TS RDS holsters and the ALS system has only improved with age. The gen 1 DO I have has a super narrow ALS lever with I had to install an OTD Nub on to make usable. The new RDS and 7TS holsters made the lever width a priority. Height of the holster isn’t that different. The RDS actually fits far more sights and lights than the DO by design. Sorry you have had issues with your particular holster but in my experience the issue with new holster designs come down to training habits.

So i may need some assistance. I use a safariland 6354DO holster and a TLR1-HL on my glock 17. However when doing draws from holster the hand screw turn and gets loosened every draw. Anyone have any ideas on solutions

I'm used to the duty style ofthe RDS it's most applicable for law enforcement or security so I guess I can confidently say it's stiffer that for more secure retention. The triangle screw placement sits low, The RDO was okay I would say more of a militaristic style since its quicker and smoother of a draw and placement and angle.

The 6390RDS is a duty holster and designed for law enforcement and private armed security officers. I have used Safariland holsters for decades on patrol, SWAT, narcotics and now for armed body guard VIP assignments. If you are a police officer or deputy sheriff and have RDS plus light you will want the retention level plus the RDS hood for your optic on your duty weapon. Shit happens especially on patrol.

So basically the things you don't like about this holster are the things that can be taken off. Strange. Since you don't have an optic, why do you feel the "need" to close the hood when you secure your gun in the holster. You said you remove the hood anyway, why not just leave it open? As for the thumb switch, you just need to grow longer thumbs. Not sure what you would expect when buying 2 different holsters. You're going to need to change the way you do things and train to do them for the platform differences.

No I understand that 100% I use that holster on and off, I am just experiencing an actual lock up and that is a problem for me. I do take the hood on and off, I just meant more so if I leave it on I leave the hood closed is what I meant to get across, Im personally not a fan of the new hood design I understand why they did it but Im just not a fan and that may be different for everyone. If I could grow longer thumbs I would man trust me 😂

Gotta use what you are comfortable with. To each their own. And I think in this video he was just basically saying that.

Why the hell would you use an optic holster with a gun without a rds? Backwardsass. ALS guard is to prevent a gun grab, hence level II. Not LE, take it off. They make a holster like 6378 series that's more suited for you.

Safariland customer service, are a bunch of scam artist. After purchasing one holster at a promo code price, they kept sending me holsters and charging my credit card. I then sent back the holster after paying for the shipping and handling myself. They then refunded me the promo code price, and charged me the full price. And would not refund me the difference. Buy a holster from someone else, anyone else.
