If no solar eclipse glasses are available, this crisps can solution is a safe way to watch the eclipse. It is based on the principle of the camera obscura.
The quality of the projected image is a tradeoff between image sharpness and brightness as determined by the size of the hole and the length of the cylinder. - So don't expect too much, but at least it won't damage your eyes.
** Never look at the sun - only watch the projection! **

+Ginger Whalen In terms of image quality, pinhole projectors are 3rd choice. But if you can't get approved solar eclipse glasses, they are a safe last minute option. Plus the kids and me enjoyed the crisps. Be prepared to try different pinhole sizes. The smaller, the sharper, but dimmer.

at uni we had a wall of empty prangles tubs and when folk went the bog we would hide their beer in one of them and back when i was in the halls we turned the gas off to the industrial sized tumble driers and we'd take turns going for rides in them impossible to drink in them mind but it was a bit like an astronaut as you climbed in

I do agree sir, but welding glass # 13 is good too. Very nice! Danke! If I don't get the fever for the flavor of a Pringles I could shoot moon rockets from the empty tube also, I want to share a true story with you. I met a lovely Turkish girl from Germany 25 years ago, it was Christmas time. I had sparks from one moon rocket go into my right eye! Later that night at dinner when we met for the first time I could see her quite clearly! I didn't know or care where she was from all that mattered to me was my eye was better & I really liked what I was seeing! Beside that she truly was an amazing & lovely person. Ich lüge nicht und ich hoffe, dass du meine Nacherzählung genossen hast. Ich habe diese Person nie vergessen! (please excuse the google german) I know some words in German, but I am only fluent in English & Spanish.

+Masooma Batista If the hole is too big, you can cover it with some ducktape (or something thinner and less flexible) and poke a hole in it with a sewing needle. I'd recommend to have that handy anyway to make last minute adjustments. The smaller the hole, the sharper (but dimmer) the projection.

Go to a big-box hardware store (rhymes with owe's) and buy "36-in W x 78-in L Black Privacy-Control Static Cling Window Film". I can't mention the brand. (Gila) Price is $16 to $17. I can't tell you a specific brand due to KZfaq policy. The smallest size package is 78 inches X 36 inches. Make sure each eye has 5 or 6 layers of the film. You can stick them right on your own glasses or sunglasses or make a sun-shield whatever size you want on a square or rectangle piece of glass. Peel off paper and add one by one. Done!

+Jim King It is unclear to me if that film absorbs all wavelengths from infrared to UV. So I wouldn't risk my eyesight.

@AReResearch
@AReResearch 6 жыл бұрын
+daekangel #1 Absolutely not. As an adult you have the common sense to not look at the sun. Younger kids can't know that. The pinhole projectors advantage is that you aren't even looking towards the sun. So even if handled clumsily, it is safe.

I don't understand all this crazy complexity. Watching all these videos, it seems that nobody recommends anything other than either a pinhole camera, or at the other end of the spectrum some complicated apparatus involving telescopes, binoculars, or custom-built stuff like this. How about an ordinary magnifying glass?

How to treat your eyes after watching a solar eclipse
@AReResearch
@AReResearch 6 жыл бұрын
+Daphne Felix If you experience discomfort, see your MD or eye care specialist. There have been unapproved (fake) solar eclipse glasses on the market and on the internet DIY home made filters have been suggested. None of those have well defined filter characteristics over the whole spectrum from infrared to UV. The only safe methods (as suggested by NASA) are ISO certified solar eclipse glasses, shade 12 (or higher) welder's glass or pinhole projectors (my approach). What did you use? Also see: www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/How-to-Know-If-You-Suffered-Eye-Damage-Watching-the-Eclipse-441306553.html

+Stop The Bleeding It really is an image of the sun. If you have a clear incandescent light bulb somewhere in the house, you will see a projection of the filament. If you only see a dot of light, the pinhole is too wide.
