There's a rule of rock n roll which says you're only as good as your drummer .......He not only had the chops but the strength and the stamina to do it ....... He could play funk, soul, reggae didn't phase him .......

A big injustice is when Topper never appears in those bogus lists of top one hundred rock drummers. Top ten, top five for sure.

Topper was both a great time keeper and very musical. With Paul Simenon he made up one of the great rhythym sections of 1970's rock'n'roll. Too often we focus on individual musicians. More importantly is when personalities and chemistry really comes together in a band to make something unique. This is what happened with the Clash.

I love his drumming, it captures the energy of the Clash. It's complex drumming but yet so simple, not over bearing. One of the best drummers in my book for sure.

Topper's drumming had so much attention to detail... the changing bass drum pattern on the verses -- straight for the first two bars, then swinging on the second two -- being a good example. So few drummers know to do this.
