Wouldn't just a long shackle padlock do the same thing? Genuine question, maybe there are some fcu where that would not work?

@@petersylvester2905 I think that would probably work in all situations.. Genius hack, I already carry cable ties, anything to make my tool bag lighter..

@@steve11211 the long shackle padlocks will fit 99% of spurs anyway, cable tie for the rest. Requires a key or tool to remove so I see no issue. It's how I leave any spurs or rotary isolators where I've provided the supply only, just without the sign, once they snip it off it's up to them then.

There's already a red lockable box that fits over a spur , they come in a kit with one for stopping a plug being plugged in too.

The MK model shown in this video (the dark grey one) already has a hole for fitting a padlock as a lockout device. You can see the hole at the top of the carrier just below the switch.

If the fuse spur only disconnects the line conductor is it then really a safe isolation? Isn’t the neutral classed as a live conductor in the UK?

When you isolate at the board most rcbo's and mcbs only disconnect the line connection, I tend to try and fit MK FCU, because they are nice and easily laid out and they are double pole..

Certainly would be the case on a TT earthing system. TN-S or TN-C-S, not so much of an issue as the Neutral should be reliably connected to earth.

I thought the same, think it’s a handy tool but don’t see how we can term this as safe isolation? Definitely a step forward for plumbers and alike though!

I can imagine me telling a client that I'm isolating one of her circuits to work on, whilst, I quickly run upstairs to try her knickers on, it would prevent her in the meantime, from sticking a 3 amp fuse back in the boiler FCU and electrifying me.

I checked and these are £30, a lot of money for a tiny kit. I paid £50 for my ‘electrical isolation kit’ which includes several different kinds of devices, several padlocks and several cards to write the engineers details on. They come in a neat bum bag, far better value than this. I’d put it in my bag for £10, at 3 times that price it’s just not worth it, and I LOVE niche tools and happily buy things to improve my productivity.

Well, one problem with it fused spurs are not DP. If the knuckle draggers can’t replace a bonding clamp can they really carry out a lock off properly? And talking from experience they always see it as; “it’s only 3 cables” or “it works” hats off for trying though I do like the idea

Is it a solution to a non existent problem? He says to isolate a water cooler... Now. Being an electrician he could isolate the circuit at the board, remove the fcu and fit a blank plate or a new none fauly water cooler. As others have said. Looks flimsy enough to cut off. Also if you spend x amount (havent dared look at the price) on that would you leave it on the fcu and go home? No, I'd spend a smaller amount on a blank plate. I struggle to see the innovation, unless he was supposed to say "Lock off a faulty cooler to do maintenance work on it" Either way I'd still just lock off the circuit feeding it not the fcu.

You have to take the fuse out first! It prevents it being put back in.

Just removing the fuse doesn't comply with SI rules. You also have to prevent someone reinserting the original or inserting a replacement and reenergising the circuit.
