“West Wing” star Bradley Whitford returns to Washington to explore how to get Republicans in Congress to abandon their party’s ideology of climate change denial and instead commit to actually solve the problem. He meets with Jay Butera to learn about the volunteer group Citizens' Climate Lobby and their bi-partisan approach to climate solutions.

Unbelievable. I am 59 years old. This was taught in school in the seventies, in Canada. I am not overly educated, never studied chemistry, physics, etc. For people who may finally want to have a bit of knowledge of what is going on, there are two subjects you can Google which are very simple to understand: 1. The greenhouse effect, and 2. The water cycle. Just reading about these easy to understand two things will give you a basic understanding of what is happening. Enough so you can do your own thinking. I don’t care whether you lean left or right politically. You are human, and all humans are going to need to survive.

I wish people would stop using the term "Climate Change." It's *Global Warming*. It was the right, which loves manipulating the message in their favor, who started calling it "climate change," a less threatening appellation than global warming. But we should keep in mind that this only happened after President Obama was elected. During the 2008 campaign, both candidates talked about global warming and the need for cap and trade and other means to lessen carbon pollution. I've written plenty of letters about this to my representatives at the suggestion of several groups, and I always change the term "climate change" to "global warming." I want people to understand that this is about the world average temperature in both the air and the oceans increasing year by year, and not just some sort of vague cyclical change of the climate as if humans had nothing to do with it and should have nothing to do with a solution.

Have you found Citizens Climate Lobby yet? CitizensClimateLobby.org If not, I hope you spend a little time learning about this wonderful organization and their proposal for federal legislation to take a giant first step toward addressing the problem. Thank you for writing to your Congressional Representatives about the issue. I started doing that shortly after finding CCL, as they recommended doing so. CCL has a great nonpartisan, market-based solution that both Democrats and Republicans can support, and is responsible for creation of the bipartisan House Climate Solutions Caucus. Next time you write Congress about global warming, please ask your Representative on the House side to consider joining that caucus, and to use Carbon Fee and Dividend as the gold standard to which all other solutions could be compared. You can do so here and get on CCL's mailing list at the same time: bit.ly/CCL-write-congress Citizens Climate Lobby is composed of over 60,000 volunteers and is growing rapidly. The group is working to create the political will for climate solutions by doing public outreach and lobbying Congress. They have a respectful, positive approach. Regarding calling it 'global warming' verses 'climate change', I usually use this phrase, because it catches the main effects of the CO2 that will soon become the biggest challenge mankind has faced in tens of thousands of years if we do not act soon: global warming, climate change, sea level rise acceleration and ocean acidification.

Yes, John G, I'm actually a member! I was part of a group meeting with our Congressman's staff a couple of months ago to explain about it, and also a group of us gave a presentation to the Sierra Club in the next town. I think it's a great idea! Let's hope enough Congress people do, too. BTW, we had a similar experience to the one mentioned in the film. The staffers we talked to told us we weren't like other environmental groups. We were nice! 😇

So okay, anthropogenic means _caused by human activity_, but I somehow doubt it would be a term that would resonate with most people (I figured it out but had to look it up to be sure I was right). My husband, a music professor, could use the term hemisemidemiquaver, but people would probably understand it easier if he just called it a 64th note. 😉

Yes, they did, Tam, and we should never forget to follow the money when it comes to all of this. Unfortunately, people in charge of these corporations only see $$ and forget that they have to live in this world, too, as well as their descendants. Let's hope enough of them come to their senses as things get rougher and rougher weather-wise that they'll actually do some things that could help. And people can do their parts, too. We bought a Chevy Volt and hardly have to use gas at all. It makes me feel great to be able to go places without spewing crap into the air. Even if the electricity runs out and it switches to gas, it gets over 50 MPG. Nice to have a chat on KZfaq with someone who is intelligent and has a great vocabulary and knowledge of his subject. 👏

Ooops. :) Thanks for pointing that out. I guess I should have known Tam is a woman's name, but I think I didn't pay much attention and saw it as Tom. My bad. Anyway, I like how you called it the "climate crisis." That would be good terminology, better than "climate change," which sounds almost benign and was obviously why it was adopted. I always wonder how people adjust once they realize they've been lied to. But it seems like a lot of people simply refuse to believe they're being lied to, doesn't it? It makes me wonder what it will take to turn them around. I wonder if those people experiencing tornadoes, floods, fires, and drought are all that sure everything is completely normal.
