In 'Safety In Large Scale Railroading' we touch on several safety best practices that can help you have a safer experience while enjoying large scale railroading. This information has been compiled from our own experiences as hobbyists, safety measures codified by other live steam railroad organizations, and the input of current hobbyists of large scale railroading.
00:00 Start
00:17 Follow IBLS Standards
00:45 Brake Systems
01:18 Safety Chains
02:25 Inspect Your Equipment Before Operation
02:49 Wear Closed Toe Shoes
03:29 Be Familiar With The Equipment You Are Operating
03:43 Know Your Stopping Distances, Don't Overload Your Train, & Balance Out Your Cars
04:06 Know The Signal System
04:28 Situational Awareness
05: 07 Operate At Safe Speeds & Maintain Distance Between Trains
05: 22 Keep Your Equipment Clear of Foul Points
05:30 Carry Flags & Have Someone Protect the Rear of Your Train in the Event of a Derailment.
05:48 Consider Carrying a Cell Phone, Flashlight, Tools, & Fire Extinguisher
06:02 Ensure You Have a Working Headlight & Rear Light For Night Operation
06:07 Do Not Operate Large Scale Equipment Under the Influence of Drugs or Alcohol
06:24 Park Your Train if You Are Fatigued or Overly Tired
06:42 Stay Off the Tracks & Do Not Walk On the Rails
06:52 Keep All Small Children & Animals Well Supervised

Unfortunately there’s are some people that consider breaking the rules a funny thing but most people respect the equipment and property of others

I'm not going to lie, I honestly didn't think imbalance could be such a factor to trains even when going safe speed, im going to bring that up to my manager at work, since our train has an issue derailing due to poor track construction in a certain spot (the train is a 24 inch Guage gas powered locomotive with 5 coaches totaling 87 feet all together)

Currently building my own locomotive in Australia. A very basic electric loco but gotta be sure to follow safety practices. Most, if not all of the things you mentioned are also enforced here in Australia!

Are boiler failures very dangerous with miniature steam? I have a buddy that keeps trying to scare me away because he doesn't like boilers.

No, they are not. Most you’ll get is lots of clouds and depressurization.

I'll second what KevDoom2 said. It's not that they aren't dangerous, none have ever happened because of the way they are designed. Model boilers are not built with scale materials... they are built like nuclear reactors... The pressures in use, even if completely neglected are largely incapable of rupturing the shell or other major boiler components. Yes, you can get seriously burned by a hobby boiler many ways, leaning up against it, cracking open a blowdown valve while standing in front of the port, or having the sight glass break by carelessly hitting it with an object... but 99% of the time these are dumb self inflicted wounds of carelessness. If you are moderately aware of what you're doing, and have respect for what you're working on, I would not be afraid of it at all. If you treat your boiler right, she'll treat you right in return.

@@kleetus92 Thanks! Yeah, I'm planning to build my own, so it'll take a good deal of research just to design it to the overbuilt standards which they tend to be. I guess it'll be a bit of a trip hahaha
