I've never ever fully shaved since my facial hair started growing 4 years ago, all i did was trim, trim, trim because i liked the look. Today, i did my first ever full shave & judging from this video, i did it horribly wrong! *Firstly*, i used a cheap 3 blade shaver, *secondly*, i used soap foam as shaving cream & *thirdly*, i did one & half passes, if that makes any sense. I can still feel the hairs protruding on my cheek line, chin & neck line & it's irritating. My paps never taught me how to shave & he always had a full beard with a slight trim for as long as i've known him. I guess this is how i learn & i definitely need to get my 'shave game up'! Subscribed!! :)

So glad to see you back!!! I was actually just thinking today "hmm when is Nick gonna make a new video" then I get notification :) and I agree on Gondolier, excellent stuff!! Ouch, sound painful, i've never let someone shave me before. Not only do most pro straight shaves cost too much but they can only use cheap shavettes and canned goop :(

Great to see you back in front of the camera again and good to hear that you are able to have irritation-free shaves again after your horrible experience with a 'professional' straight razor shave! I always look forward to your next video. I like the way you communicate with your viewers, talking about what you've been up to. It's like catching up with a friend :-). You are doing a great job, so keep 'm comin'. Shave awesome!

Glad to see you back nick! I'm a new sub and it seemed after I clicked the button you stopped making videos. Turns out your face got beat up! D: I'm sorry. You've earned my sub though. Ways you've helped me get a better shave: The way you edit is also _really good_. I'm bad at making lathers and you've been the best resource so far. You show everything, and the lather reviews really helped me understand qualities of lather, like peaking and how long to load. I won't call out anyone, but people who cut out part of their process on youtube really left me somewhat confused and with unrealistic expectations. I firmly believe you've introduced people to lots and lots of products and purveyors. Certainly it's been things that I wouldn't find. The detail in your reviews about the feel and not just the scent has not gone unnoticed. Thanks for being here as a resource.

I was flying back from Bangkok to Amsterdam...02:20am flight so I thought I'd have a hot towel shave from Truefitt & Hill barbers earlier that day. I had one nick but a part from that it felt great...then I got back to my hotel room and felt areas where it wasn't smooth and close. I went for a few hours sleep, showered and very carefully went over the areas that wasn't smooth. I was pretty disappointed for the money I paid.

Awesome! Great to see you back in action! Bummed to hear about your horrid straight razor shave experience. My first Professional S.R. shave was horrible as well, and it was actually my first shave ever. My I ask, did the barber actually go against the grain? I personally don't know of any professional barbers that do, but some try to go kind of a "diagonal" sort of way, going upwards almost, which I find for me, irritates me just the same as going against. Maybe next time, that's if there is a next time, advise the barber to only shave you with the grain, they should oblige out of request and you should still get a pretty close shave. : )

+MCKerrnel i have similar problem with the neck. for me multiple passes makes somewht of a difference but overall shave looks uneven cuz some of the areas I get really close shave with jus one pass. So I do go cross-grain but on 1-1.5 setting on my adjustable progressive. wrks great for me. Lower neck area, where some peopl get skin fold line, I have to go against the grain, otherwise i cant get clean look.

I had a straight razor shave, when I went to Turkey in 1994, was pretty good, I use a disposable, have done for well over 30 years. Before I used a de razor, could never get or keep the angle right, with massive cutting, bloody horrible. Then I brought a de razor 15 months ago, with the brush and soap, but as of yet, they all remain untouched in there boxes. Just too damn scared. But a great video.

My advice is never, ever go to a barber for a shave. Always do it yourself, as much as it may seem to be a nice treat. Only you know your face and how to shave it. I told the barber where I was sensitive etc and he just went ahead anyway and screwed my face up. My face was sore for nearly 2 weeks, had in-grown hairs, dry skin patches and very bad razor burn on my neck. I couldn't even touch my face without being in pain. Glad you are back on the mend!

Hey boss, how's it going? Just wanted to ask a question. I just had my first shave using a safety razor this week, and It was not nearly as close as everyone seemed to promise. I normally use Schick Hydro 5. I bought the Edwin DB87 and used the Derby blades. I have found with the hydro 5 I normally shave in many directions to get as much as possible. Should I do so with the safety razor? I was under the impression it is not a good idea to do so.

Hey Nick - love your videos - thanks for all that you do. Is it possible you would be able to tell me where you got your terrible shave from? I'm planning on taking my dad for a straight shave in Chicago and I would hate to make the same mistake. I understand if you don't want to "rat" anyone out so if there's a way to provide that info to me by way of private message or something it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks -Ben

Nick I too have a mole on the side of my face, just pluck the hair in and around it. You only need to do it every 6 weeks or so. Trust me you'll "nick" it far less. Cheers from California

No body knows your face like you...I would never let a stranger shave me..and you have proved my point...I'm pretty sure you would have done a better job then they did...good shave..

I'm curious: for your straight razor shave in Chicago, did the barber use an actual straight razor or a shavette? Thanks in advance.

It was a shavette. You cannot get a straight razor shave in the US anymore, due to hygiene/health codes. They must use a shavette with a fresh blade

+nick shaves Yea, I figured as much. I had a "straight razor shave" (shavette) done in Italy and it was similar to yours; one of the worst shaves of my life. At least the barber used a brush though, but that left me feeling pretty gross because I was bleeding after the first pass and he re-lathered using the brush so I figure the brush couldn't be that clean for me and certainly not for the next person. The lather he created was great and he prepped my face well, so I really think these horror stories about these "straight razor" shaves at barbers has everything to do with the disposable blades they use in the shavette.

Is there any chance you could bump body shop stuff up your list please Nick, is is very easy/inexpensive to get in the UK compared to lots of the US artisan soaps :)
