Marisha implied in a recent interview that one of the reasons they couldn’t do it online is because of the nonverbal communication they use to check in with each other. It’s really interesting how easy it is to see how they keep each other safe once you know what you’re looking for.

I think Talks Machina in itself combines multiple Saftey tools not only for the cast but especially for the audience. It allows to disconnect cast and characters, takes out some speculation allowing the players to explain their motivations and reasonings. It is a break, reality check and debrief for the audience, which can get pretty emotionally involved.

Character bleed also happens to actors. If you’re playing a particularly emotional part, especially one you need to use your own feelings for, you may have trouble getting out of your character’s headspace.

Yes! At least in American theater, Method acting and its slightly less intense (but still potentially dangerous) descendants are still widely used and taught to students, without consideration for safety tools like these, which I think would actually be super-helpful both in classes and in performances, especially the aftercare ones. I just started thinking about this after my last show ended so I haven’t had the chance to put any of these tools in practice yet, but my current game plan is to do a quick mindfulness meditation after each performance, to ground myself back in reality. And if/when I get around to directing things, I’m certainly gonna try to implement things like debriefing and maybe even stars/wishes where applicable.

@@calihoyer1415 That is also partiatly true in europe, at least. There is a reason that Stanislavskij is not videly used anymore. It is incredible emotionally draining. As you mentioned, being able to ground yourself is very important. Unfortunatly, most schools are only concerned with getting you into character, but not with aftercare. As eaxample, if two actors have had negative physical contact (doing stage-fight) it is important for them to have positive contact after (hugging, asking if ok, asking if crossed line) Particularly, in scenes where one attacks another, the assilant must engage afterwards.

@@katrinepetersen2566 I love your stage combat example. That kind of thing is starting to become more common in the US, as is intimacy direction, making sure love scenes are as carefully choreographed and rehearsed as fight scenes. In shows with an intimacy director, any actors involved in a love scene have to have a signal between themselves (even something as simple as a high-five) to signal that the love scene and/or the show is over and they’re back out of character, where they (presumably) don’t have romantic feelings for each other. I think that’s a great idea and should be spread to the rest of the cast, even the ones who don’t have love or fight scenes; a short ritual to signal the story is over for now and they’re back to being coworkers and friends and nothing more or less.

I had heard about these kinds of boundaries before, but I never thought that they were needed at my table, because I've known all of them for years, and felt that I could keep things fun and comfortable without needing an explicit conversation about it. then we had a session where one player had to leave because the situation had made him far too uncomfortable, the feelings were too real and too close to home. he didn't even know that was a line for him before and learned it at that session. before our next game I had everyone fill out a form to establish where their lines and veils were, and put together an aggregate version that would keep everyone comfortable, I made copies for everyone so that they could reference it, and have made sure to keep open lines of communication on these matters. It is so important.

Thank you for sharing this story. I think it is one we have all experienced. In education we have a saying at it is "You get one." Which means you are allowed one mistake/emergency/injury ect. You let students climb something and one gets hurt? That's ok..but that's your one. Which means from that point as educators we implement a plan so students don't get hurt in the future. It doesn't mean you don't do the activity but you just change so it's safer. That's what you did. You didn't know until you KNEW! We all get one. The sign of a great DM, and friend honestly, is that you learnt from that experience and made changes. You made your one count!

In my opinion, Matt coments on Sprinkles have to do with some people saying that Sprinkles should be dead by now because Laura constantly forget about it. Matt is saying that he doesn't really care, because Laura likes Sprinkles and she is having more fun having Sprinkles than needing to constantly worry about it. I think what I was trying to say is that Matt knows that worrying about Sprinkles safety all the time in a survival sim kind of way would not be fun for Laura so he doesn't do it. @@sodawax3457 This makes sense. I have to imagine there's a difference, too, between, "Something bad happens to Sprinkle" vs. "Something bad happens to Sprinkle and it's Jester's fault for sheer negligence". Which is why Trinket, a loyal and intelligent pet who willingly assists Vex in battle, has hit points and can get hurt (although with a safety net of the pokeball necklace), while Sprinkle, who is just a hapless little weasel along for the ride, doesn't drown despite nobody thinking to specifically cast water breathing on him. I could see "Harm to animals" itself not being a line, but "punishing your character because you, the real person, didn't meticulously spell out every time you took care of your imaginary pet" being a line.

I think possible one of the best, in a quiet way, safety tools is the bad dice roll check-ins. It just shifts any potential aggression or frustration away from any of the people at the table (mainly away from Players vs DM) to the dice. It really strengthens the idea that everyone at the table is playing the game together, rather than against each other, and that at any relevant point it is the dice that are the antagonists (which is also just the truth) rather than any person present.

The point you made about the Vax/Raven queen arc almost being a line for Liam because of what was going on irl That’s the whole reason I think it’s incredibly disrespectful to him when people call Vax “edgy and emo” because of the turn he took in character after the Sunken Tomb episode. When I learned what Liam was going through at that time, I think that’s when I realized why I got so attached to Vax. I was able to relate to his loss. And the moment Vax kills Thordak really hit home for me on my second time through. He wasn’t just speaking as Vax in that moment. He was speaking as Liam. Edit: on a side note i don’t think I ever heard Liam’s “i don’t like it” in the scene with Nila and her son before until you showed it in this video. That’s interesting.

I play with a war vet at the table so I definitely get the need for a safety net but the one I use is a bit more simple. My rule is "if youre ever getting to the point where its hard to seperate your character's anger from your own, call a smoke break and talk to me about it, we might rewind or I might pull it into an unexpected direction" the reason I implemented it is because this is a guy who's family regularly steals from him for their own convenience including things like stealing his 1000$ bike as a gift to their boss' teenage kid so we weren't really expecting some drunken tavern antics where another player stole his coin purse to set him off, so when he explained why he wasn't a fan I pulled it into an oportunity for that character to redeem herself and make it up to him. I find its a really good versatile rule to implement (obviously doesn't work well on stream)

I find myself wondering, with so many of them having kids, and with the way Liam reacted to the scene with Nila's children, and major spoilers ahead, I wonder how he and Sam and Laura and Travis were feeling when Luc died. It was only temporary, of course. But it was still major harm to a child. Sam's in-game child. Who he named something he'd been considering naming his irl child. I wonder if that was a veil for them. It seems like it. Matt didn't describe in any detail how he died. Didn't really describe it at all beyond Marion's scream. I know that even Flando's timestamp comment on the episode specifically had a content warning in it.

I hadn't considered "audience safety tools" as a thing before, but I think I've been accidentally doing it? I stopped watching episodes live a while ago, and intentionally look at spoiler hash tags. I don't mind it when the episodes are dark and heavy, but with how my emotions have been handling all of the [gestures broadly at everything], I really need to be in the right frame of mind before buckling up for a stressful episode. I especially need to check for a character death. While I never feel like I lose solid division between the characters and the actors and myself, my empathy can kick into overdrive watching the cast work through Big Emotions. If I'm already mentally/emotionally tapped for the day, then that's not a time that's great for me to watch people act out and/or experience dread or grief or rage (the non-barbarian kind).

the way i process potentially trigger content in any show i like, critical role included, is from behind the stained glass window of my own OCs. for example, its a lot easier for me to deal with watching the roleplay surrounding caleb's very intense trauma if i imagine a puppet character of my own who's able to hug him and talk things through with him, so i dont feel like im just left helpless with my own feelings and trauma memories and nothing to do with them.

She was right. She's my CR watching buddy. But I definitely had to pause the VOD several times to calm down. My Thursday gaming group have been gaming together since 2011. There have been plenty of games that we've ended early because someone wasn't feeling well, or having a panic attack or a bad reaction to something. We also don't force people to play if they're not feeling well for whatever reason. Rule number one with this group is "Real life comes first." I also remember one time when I was crying both in and out of character, and they offered to stop play to make sure I was alright. I urged them to continue, but I received a lot of comfort both in and out of character. Finding a RP group like that, whom you can trust and have fun with even when the story gets heavy, is priceless.

This is truly incredible work, thank you so much for making it! I think if more people saw this we'd see way less of the concern trolling, "this person must be so angry" or "this person is clearly uncomfortable". This group is made up of incredibly talented, hard-working, devoted actors, and watching their game is a uniquely intimate viewing experience. It's possible for a viewer to have trouble discerning the lines between character, meta, actor, and so on - no matter how well we think we know them. Videos like this really highlight how great the cast is at maintaining the balance: checking in, reassuring, and voicing their boundaries when something hits too close. The truth is we don't know them well enough to read their minds - this really helps underline that TRUST is always present at their table. Even if we're unsure, we need to remember that they have trust in each other. Also on a personal note, this made me want to do a safety checklist for the table I run. I write for my family, but I can't read their minds either - and it made me realize there's things I might not be comfortable with as a DM that other players might have no problem with. We could easily stray into that territory if I don't have a check in place to clearly communicate those lines. This is a fantastic resource. Thank you again!
@sodawax3457
@sodawax3457 3 жыл бұрын
That is amazing. Yes it is hard for some people to accept but even a family table needs safety tools. Often at tables where we are very close to people the tools are already there in an organic way. For example a parent DM won't put a kid who is afraid of clowns in a scary situation with one...or depending on the kid, they will have then fight a clown to overcome the fear. But yeah. I play a table with my very best friends. Women who I have seen give birth! And we have had 2 really significant moments where lines have been crossed. Both where before I knew about safety tools. I felt strange sending the form to my best friends but I actually learnt about some lines I had no idea about. It's a great idea to have these tools at any table :-)

I am high as hell right now but this video is really fucking empowering! When I saw beau and Caleb fighting during the early parts of season two, I personally felt uncomfortable/distressed by it because I was worried about the emotional welfare of Marissa and Liam. So uncomfortable that I always skip those parts whenever I re-watch the show or have it on in the background while I’m doing other things. I’ve never seen those interactions in full. But then I convinced myself that I was being too sensitive. That I was being too sensitive and immature. I felt a little ashamed of myself for being too sensitive and weak and I kept my mouth shut and didn’t leave any comments about it. Almost like when a friend’s friend says something legit problematic but I don’t know what’s my place in addressing it so I stay silent and hurt inside with this elephant in the room. But! The way that you contextualize and frame Beau and Caleb‘s arguments in-game here completely deconstructs my shame! Your explanation makes total sense! And under that framework, my earlier reaction should not be something to be ashamed about! It is proof that I am human and that I care about other people and the people I am playing with! Just thank you for putting this into words and helping me deconstruct and learn. Edit: wow reading this the morning after is a trip. Sorry for oversharing-I was just emotional! Also I know it’s spelled Marisha. I was using text dictation in the moment. Also the 20:04 analysis made me cry when I saw it because it hit too close. Thank you for examining that intensity and breaking it down in a way that helps me understand and validate my OWN personal stuff and have the language to advocate for myself to my DM. I’m definitely sharing this with my group. Thanks again!

I had this same issue! I had always assumed there was some sort of boundary there but that scene was so intense I had a hard time with it. Seeing it all broken down and how often the cast show they have those lines set definitely helped me recontextualize things like the "Bowlgate" scene.
@kootiepatra

I found those scenes difficult, too---not because I was worried that Liam and Marisha weren't okay, but because interpersonal conflict stresses me the HECK out IRL, particularly when both parties aren't being careful with each other's feelings. There's nothing *wrong* with how those scenes were played, per se, and it makes sense with those characters. But good heavens, it still made a little part of me want to flee the room. I think this video is quite helpful in unpacking that and figuring out what to do with those feelings.

I know the gist cuz of the animated recap and the Awkward Sibling Hug that happened in the following session is one of my all time favorite clips. I honestly think the reaction around it and remembering how bad it got in real life is worse for me than two players pretend fighting.

So Travis at one moment took notice of Marisha's body language and started to look more and more at her then he peered in her cup and eventually, in the midst of everyone being kinda roudy, he went over and made sure Fjord talked to Beau and checked in with her. It was such a cute and wonderful moment of people being genuinely concerned about what's happening to one another. He made sure that Beau had some acknowledgment and had her feelings be vocalized to another player. So good, so good. Travis is a big inspo for how I go about these games honestly. Since I started watching CritRole, I could see just how much love they all have for each other, and how much they care. Always checking in in little ways, be it catching someone's eye or touching their arm or shoulder. One of my favourite little moments of this is in C2E93 (just after Beau's talk with the witch), Travis hands a very shaken Marisha a tissue under the table and then keeps a subtle eye on her for a while after. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hrCRqtmWl7jcfoE.html The debrief at the end of that episode must have been intense because of the highs and joy they were feeling compared to Marisha (31:33).

I think a good example of making sure that everyone is ok especially Marisha, is in C2 E126. When she delves into Beau's past of SA and r*pe given her own past with it. Ashley Johnson did such a good job keeping them both safe during the date and conversation, Marisha knew where her boundaries were, and Sam cracked some jokes to lighten the mood. The whole cast is family and they want to make sure no one gets emotionally hurt and if they do that person has the whole cast to lean on and get comfort from.

Only issue ive come across is ive had 3 separate relationships start from my games, one of which ended badly and ruined the game. At first I thought it was kinda cute, "Oh look, I get play the DM AND matchmaker" but then realized maybe this was a dangerous situation and messing with peoples emotions, still unsure if the game influenced this or if it was a social inevitability. On a positive side one of my friends met his boyfriend in my game, they broke up a year later but are still best friends now to this day. That felt nice.

Wow yes. My general feeling is also that that is super cute. But I also had never thought about the power of messing with people's emotions. I think in the end everyone has agency and is ultimately in control of their own feelings. I think you would have to be trying pretty hard to really be messing with peoples choices in partner. If you think of any pass time where people end up friends like sports or kareoke ECT people often pair off. So yeah. .I think it's just cute :-)

Great and informative video! I was especially excited/curious to see how you’d tackle liam’s portrayal of vax in this and you didn’t miss! He definitely lives his characters while at the table, and because he allows himself to feel so deeply, there were times when even I as a viewer worried for him in the end game.

You did it! I have been following the process on twitter and the finished product is amazing 😀 You really opened my eyes with the example you showed, I had not realised how much the cast check in on each other during difficult scenes. Of course the dads checked in on each other. One thing you didn't mention in the video was that there were session 0's for the second campaign that weren't recorded where they got to test out their new characters. We don't know what happened during those, and I think that's a good thing.

Yes absolutely and that is a great example of the whole point of safety tools. On very very few tables would that be ok. Maybe even only tables with professionals. But if the tools are in place and everyone is up for it and comfortable then yep it's a possibility. Hence why communication is so very important!

Great video! I was already familiar with most of those safety tools in one way or the other, using them in games before, but actually seeing them with so many examples has helped me a lot on how to actually use them/ made myself aware how often I might have already unconsciously used them with fellow players. Makes me more confident on how to approach these on more than a theoretical level, especially when I'll DM.

A way I stay safe watching Critical Role as an audience member? I never check the chat on Twitch (and usually not on youtube either). For one, there is always heaps of spoilers. And what I personally dislike most and what really makes me anxious is the way in which many people in the chat attack the players and their characters for decisions they don't agree with, when they forget a rule or say something unwise etc. It's not technically a safety tool within the game but as an audience member, I could never watch if I was in some way forced to follow the chat. But thankfully, the Twitch chat can be easily tucked away and I just ignore youtube comments now to not trigger intense anxiety and anger. Not even just because I dislike it personally, but because I cannot even imagine what it must be like for them to get attacked for their decisions all the time... Anyway this got a bit deep but I felt like saying it "out loud."

So, although I can't watch your video, because I'm somewhere at s02e22 or something, I'm definitely saving this video (and liking beforehand, because the first two minutes are already so well made and thought of) because this really seems so interesting and one of the many reasons I enjoy watching CR is because they are all friends and it's so wholesome to see their interactions, both in and out of character. Many thanks for this video. In out DnD table, we just had a breakdown happen where a player steamrolled their story over everyone, leaving me, two player and the DM having mental breakdowns (panic attacks and epilepsy). This video came to mind during moments in episode 4 of Exandria Unlimited: Calamity. There were a number of moments the cast took advantage of these safety tools to take a breather from the intense situations their characters wound up in (Sam using it best in the first half of the episode). I also recommended this vid to someone on Reddit looking for help on how to approach playing a standoffish, unlikeable PC without overstepping his table’s comfort levels. And it’s also something I’m gonna keep in mind going into the first ever in-person games I get to run with my friends since the pandemic. So, in sum, thank you for making this video!

Yo, it was DM drop that brought me here! I felt like the session was dragging and I hadn't prepared enough; I wasn't sure what all my friends were thinking and if they really had a good time or if they were sort of annoyed and bored. Establishing safety tools I think will be great for everyone to get a more rewarding experience from the game and for me to feel more confident in my DMing. Thank you so much! (Edit: I'm a new DM and this was only the second session with friends who have never played before)

People really really under estimate the emotional load DMing takes. Also when you and or your players are new it's so much harder. Safety and care tools are a helpful way to all be on the same page and so even if your players do find aspects boring they can communicate that to you without you feeling hurt because they are also telling you what is awesome about your game. Hope the tools help

Great video! Highlighted the examples super well, safety tools are super important when your a DM, I couldn't agree with everything said in this video more, 100% sending this to all of my friends who are interested in DM'ing, since arguably in my opinion safety tools like this are even more important then having a "great" campaign (great in brackets because that's subjective and stuff)

Sometimes the stakes and emotions in critical role can get to me, and I can feel down in the dumps. One way I've combated this is by thinking from Matt's perspective and what he wants from the game. Whenever it's looking dire I remind myself that Matt wants to tell a cool story with his friends, and even if it's looking dire now, he has a plan as long as the players stick with it. For example: Travis in particular was feeling pretty defeated after a recent session. But in the debrief, Matt himself told them to keep pushing and that it wasn't over, which reminded me to look at it from Matt's point of view and it made me feel a whole lot better. This can get complicated when it's tension between characters/players (bowlgate for example) I worry that such disputes would bleed into the real world and has made me feel pretty sad. Luckily this doesn't really happen all that much. I don't really have a way to combat this, but I just try to trust that they'll talk about it if it is actually a problem, I don't want to see them actually mad at one another.

I am absolutely amazed at the level of quality, care and work that must have been in the making of this video. I'm very grateful for it. I started watching CR about 3 or 4 years ago, starting playing dnd like a month after starting watching. No one played on my circles of friends and nowadays we have 3 ongoing campaigns (two as DM, one as player) and occasional one shots. Everybody is enthralled with this kind of storytelling and some of us do volunteering with children and teenagers and have been wondering for some time how to approach the game as a tool for them to discover. This certainly makes it so much easier, to make sure it's a satisfying and safe experience for them to enjoy. Also, the video was SO AESTHETICALLY PLEASANT. The editing value was amazing. I loved it. Wow thank you! I worked so hard on it so it really means a lot. I edited this until I hated it then tried to edit it some more so I'm so happy you found it easy to watch. Somewhere in these comments I spoke to another person about safety tools for kids games. I play with young kids a lot. Fundamentaly you just want them to know that they can tell you to stop. And with teens I use it as a teachable moment about consent. Also for little kids I use this game instead of dnd if that is helpful. It is the character sheet setup I use with very young kids. twitter.com/delaneykingrox/status/1074592651343683584
