Over the past few (years, honestly), I've watched other people make custom hard candy from scratch - oddly satisfying pulling, stretching, rolling, and chopping - with adorably tiny results. So, after a lot of watching from the sidelines, I decided that I needed to try this out for myself - how hard could it actually be? So I ventured to Lofty Pursuits candy store in Tallahassee, FL where Greg & the team taught me how to sling candy - old school style. We made custom flavored drop candy in a press, and two different batches of image candy - one watermelon, and one tiny disgruntled alien. What do you guys think of our final candies?

Jane, I just adore your Dad! He's amazing! When I saw that Saf had made a hard candy making video I hoped it would be @ Lofty Persuits! I've been watching your Dad's videos for YEARS now, and he's just an amazing rennaisance man. Is there anything he can't do, or doesn't know something about? It sure seems like he is all but omniscient! You are so lucky to have a dad like that! I really hope that you enjoyed your day with Saf & Ty, I know I sure would! They are FUN!

Something a lot of candy makers I watch say is, essentially, "it's just candy". No one is living or dying on whether it comes out perfectly, or even right. It's a delightfully "hakuna matata" outlook.

I've rewatched this video so many times and I think one of the (underratedly) best parts is at 14:21. Watching Jake run back up while repeating "keep rolling," then reassuring her, is so wholesome. I think that's one of the many moments in this video where you can tell how much the staff genuinely care about making sure Saf felt comfortable while she learned at a rapid pace

My daughter and I LOVE Lofty Pursuits. We live a few hours away in Pensacola but we stop by whenever we are in town to watch them make candy and load up on their amazing vegan ice cream. I'm so glad you bring attention to small businesses ❤️

I love that Saf never goes in with an attitude that she’s going to master anything in one day. She genuinely appreciates the time it takes to become a craftsman/artisan and just wants to celebrate their craft by trying it out, exposing her audience to it, and having fun!

Lofty pursuits! When it comes to candymaking videos, they are the OG's. I haven't researched this at all but as someone who was there on the frontlines, I point to their videos for the start of the craze. Specifically that one where the colour of the candy doesn't line up with the flavour. I am pretty dang sure that's what set it off, although other channels were slow to pop up in the beginning.

Lofty Pursuits has been a staple of my life since they converted to an ice cream parlor. I’m so glad that you got to experience this with them, the team and Greg are all so lovely! Lofty Pursuits has been there when I celebrated my sisters graduation, MY graduation, when I got accepted to college, and most recently I brought my then boyfriend (soon to be fiance and one month to the day anniversary husband) when we visited my parents. Watching this video is making me so nostalgic. I think I’m gonna try to book a flight soon to go home and see my parents and visit Loftys 😂

I LOVE Greg and Jake. You can tell how happy the owner was to be getting this exposure for something he is so passionate about, and Jake is so down to just joke and chill while also making the work more fun for Safiya. Honestly, some of the best teachers I've seen! They're so encouraging and even the little 'it looks ok, I guess' comments were bumped up with things like 'You did great!' It's so refreshing
