Fran Drescher is a LOT more than just an actor and a writer and executive producer. She also is a rape survivor. She was raped at gunpoint during a home invasion. She is also a cancer survivor. She was told from the start of her career, that she would never make it in Hollywood with her voice. If there is anyone who knows how to fight and survive, its certainly Fran Drescher.

I would say the average is still pretty damning for an industry that is estimated to pull in 29-32 billion dollars this year. To get that down low enough, you'd need a hell of a lot of people making that or less to drag an average down from what the top stars make.

@@doriansookochoff9768, unfortunately, a lot of people would just look at the average and assume that most people make that amount. Statistical understanding isn't our strong suit in the U.S. Instead, the way the interviewee framed it really presented a different picture: the overwhelming majority (86%) make less than $26K. And it would get worse over time, as more and more jobs are for streaming content and eliminated by AI. Regardless of how much any of the rest of us understand art-focused jobs, we can relate to 1) powerful, multi-billion dollar companies being required to pay their workers fairly and 2) protecting jobs from being outsourced to other countries or non-humans.

That is sad, however most writers aren't worth $27,000 a year with the garbage they put out. I remember an episode of Charmed that was literally the movie Ladyhawke. Including the dramatic music followed by the line A day without a night. Regarding the eclipse. And Chris Levinson got credit and Payment for "writing" a stolen script. So much poor writing and stolen ideas in Hollywood I vote they pay good writers A lot and bad ones crap. Create competition. Let's face it most of the best writers are also producers and directors. The come up with an idea write a script and then set out to make the movie. And they get their payday.

I think this is a scenario were congress should and could get involved. This could also be a major campaign issue not just for television, but incomes in general have not really gone up, while the expectation of more work loads has gone up. Inflation has gone up, rents gone up. When you have 78% of Americans who cant put money into a savings account, and 49% of Americans now renting because they can't afford a home in the bad market, this writers strike can grow pretty largely into with pay issues. Meanwhile ,companions are making more money then ever, CEOs are making more money then ever. hense that idiot CEO who said, he's not budging. If congress decides to pass a law, he wont have a choice. Majority of americans support this strike.

Because she's obviously right. We're talking about the biggest industry in the world and their employees need a second job because they're literally poor. We need the same conversation for the rest of country being crippled by corporations making more profits than ever but their employees are literally poor and being subsidized by the tax payers. McDonald's Walmart these types of corporations need to be organized and go on strike. They pay less taxes than the rest of america and make more money then the rest of america and their employees are poor. I'm a conservative and the way they lie about how much taxes they pay is deceitful and they get away with it because of how the mainstream media phrases the question. They'll start the conversation with we pay over 50% of the nation's total taxes. But they avoid the percentages because they make 90% of the money and the news never calls them out on it. It wouldn't be that bad if they actually paid their employees a fair livable wage. The government has to step in and say if you're going to pay less taxes through the corporate tax code loopholes then there has to be a federal corporate minimum wage of 20$ an hour. You can choose the corporate tax loopholes and pay 20$ an hour or go back to paying normal taxes like everyone else. This would work because it doesn't effect small business owners and mom and pop shops. We closed down all the factories and farms which were the #1 income for middle class america and allowed walmart and others to bypass the constitution and employ slave labor products overseas. The constitution is useless if our trade deals do not abide by it.

I know some contracts include this already, but I mean just a percentage, no upfront payment. Let them take the same risks the studios do. Sink or swim together. If they are fired from a project or the project is cancelled pay them the minimum wage for each hour spent on it.

Per the hollywood reporter it would cost the studios 600 million a year to say yes to all what the unions are asking for. The company's running the studios made 343 billion dollar profit in 2022. So just 0.18% of it could fix all, and they said no to 0.18%.

"Profit" is a bookkeeping convention. They need to be paid a percentage of the gross. I know of someone who negotiated for a percentage of the profits. The people who ran the company made sure there were no profits--paying themselves in other ways.

AI will replace jobs regardless. At best you're trying to force companies to hire people to really just sit there and "supervise" AI. Guess what? Plenty of other countries will not require that and if you think a lot of manufacturing moved abroad, just wait until AI work can be outsourced by sending a file in a second. AI is coming and you might as well celebrate that it can take over repetitive menial tasks and look for opportunities to do something it can't or that can be amplified by it and use it as competitive advantage

@leok7193

@@chrisddawson I don't have to do much not to get replaced. I'm an investigator and AI can't gather evidence, stand in front of a judge and swear to a warrant or go actually perform a thorough search. However, AI would be great to analyze thousands of documents received in a white collar criminal case, cross reference account numbers or search through emails for conspiratorial language. That's something not far off. You are fairly safe from replacement with things like plumbing, nursing, car repair, etc. The tasks are too complex and varied to be automated like they would be at a factory, where items can be fully standardized analyzed and manipulated physically. That said, AI could help save time and effort by for example scanning ECU, analysing all data stored in a car and narrowing the likely problem.

@@leok7193 what is your angle exactly? That we should let companies do what they want to do because otherwise they will outsource jobs to other countries? The very same corporate principle that you’re defending will collapse because of there will be no consumption from Americans… cause they have no jobs.
@chrisddawson
@chrisddawson 11 ай бұрын
We can’t have a country where everyone is a plumber or manual laborer. Not that those jobs aren’t very important but the need is ultimately finite. At some point when we start replacing people who contribute buying power we will have lost. I think you get the idea that it should be of concern when those replaced have a hard time “moving on” and not paying or affording their bills. It’s a cop out for people to say “we ve always had this problem” as so many are around this subject. It’s also no longer good for the country to say “I’ve got mine. You get yours” when there’s nothing more to get. And I would fear, but can fully see an investigator, lawyer or any white collar job being replaced or job capacity reduced ( meaning that nice salary gets reduced too). It’s not automation. It’s intelligence we re dealing with. Bests.

Why do actors get paid more and better than people that put their life’s at risk , doctors etc .police ambulance and healthcare workers get paid way less than actors! Change your style living everyone else has to

Reality is 99% earns $40k a year or less, 86% $26k. Per the hollywood reporter it would cost the studios 600 million a year to say yes to all what the unions are asking for. The company's running the studios made 343 billion dollar profit in 2022. So just 0.18% of it could fix all.

@@christmasfanj6735 I’m sure and I do not see what’s so bad about what they making ! Many people do not have a home over their head or know where the next meal is coming from! A lot of us would be happy to make half what they do and receive the benefits ! Just like people not in Hollywood have people above us making more money! Life is not fair and we do not always get what we want ! They need not be so greedy

I wish them well but their problem may be that not many people who have a say in anything care sh*t about their product. These studios have been making the same pulpy meaningless movies and series for decades. If that industry would just disappear, would anyone but a few pensioners notice? It may just be time to look for a job elsewere.

$65,000 a year salary is not bad at all. But to hear that 86% make less than $26,000 a year... That's really bad; even more so if said actors are living in California where the cost of living is ridiculously high. I 100% agree that Hollywood needs to be more fair. With streaming being a major part in how people watch shows and movies these days, these studios need to make the proper changes ASAP *and* consider inflation rates. They need to realize that without actors & actresses, these companies have 0 income and 0 profits.

65K in LA is bad. You can't afford the average 1 bedroom apt on that. Not by normal commercial rental standards at least. 3x your documented monthly take home is the rental standard terms and the average rent is $2,742. That means that an individual needs to make over 98K just to get an average apartment.

Regardless where you stand on this issue, if you stand at all, It is brilliant that Fran and her union members are communicating with the public quite openly. Kind of a "marketing strategy" in itself to drum up support. And it appears to be working. A recent poll revealed that less than 7% of the public sides with the AMPTM. Maybe they too need to stop being so quiet and start being more forthcoming about their side of this issue. But please keep Bob Iger out of it. His big mouth did them no justice.

I'd like to see that poll as I'd imagine that most American don't support either side. However, public opinion really has no affect on the strike unless millions of people are willing to cancel their streaming service or refuse to go see movies out of protest. But that isn't even close to happening (July 21-23 was the fourth biggest box office weekend of all time). [EDIT] I found the poll but "I Don't Support Either Side" wasn't even an option.

@Hedgehobbit google it. I agree that the avg American is too busy making their own living. The poll represented about 1000 people. A cross section representative so in that sense my comment could be somewhat misleading. But go ahead and google it and look at the results itself. However I do stand on my opinion that more have less sympathy for big Hollywood overseers, and more sympathy for the vast majority of actors who are struggling to make ends meet, because they are relatable to most pf the population. Sit down with an actor who shows you his residual check worth 35 cents and you will probably suggest he or her go online and fill out some job applications. But sit down to one of these billionaires and listem to them complain about the rsik to their mulit billionaire portfolio's and stock options and yiur response will probably be- SHUT THE H*** UP!
