Thanks for checking out this video Makeover of a very large group of Sago Palms. I tried to show a couple techniques of how to trim a sago palm (cycas revoluta). It is a great example of how large pups will get if left alone. This plant seemed to be uncared for and was becoming invasive to the home. My job was to uncover its beauty and my hope was that the homeowners would be able to leave the sago in place instead of remove it. The actual process took about 4 hours, so enjoy the short 22 minute version and let me know what you think. Thank you again for watching and please watch a commercial or two, that helps the channel out and shows our advertisers that you are watching.

Not only did you do a great educational show & tell, you're also your own cameraman, lighting and sound person, producer and editor. These videos are excellent. I just moved from Chicago to Florida and am trying to learn all I can about gardening in this climate. I'll be watching all your productions! Thank so much .

Watching a few of your videos this morning and learned a bunch. I'm a SoCal transplant living in South Georgia for 26 years. We brought 2 Sagos when we moved here. Thanks,

We currently have 22 Sagos. 2 were from a friend that his wife wanted removed and were 20+ years old. Most others were pups from another friend. As for our VWs we raced one and at that time we owned a full service Union 76 gas station so yes we were good mechanics. Thanks for replying. Have a blessed day Brother.

I'm a VW fan since owning my first Karmann Ghia in 1974. At one time there were 7 VWs in our family. Had a Bus in the early 90s.

Always nice to meet a VW fan! I love those Ghias. Depending on the years of your 7 VWs, I hope someone was a good mechanic 🤣. Thanks for taking the time to leave a message. Cheers! Burke

I'm so glad I saw your video today , I'm an old New Yorker living in the IE, and I inherited my son's home and his Sago Palm, and I'm trying to maintain it. I trimmed it last year, and I'm about to do it again, I learned a lot today. Pups and root shoots.....

Thank you for the videos! I’ve been looking at all sago videos on YT trying to figure out why one of my 3 young sagos in the yard has developed yellow spots on most fronds (the other 2 have green healthy fronds). I haven’t seen this problem mentioned on YT yet… if you do see this comment and have a suggestion for me, I’d love to hear from you… thank you. 🙏

Hi Kim, have you looked on the underside of the fronds to see if there is scale on them. Let me know before I suggest more.

@@burkefranklin1 ah Burke, oh wise one, on the spot - found these white stuff all over the underside of the fronds. Seems like the internet suggests neem oil with dish soap. Some recommended systemic insecticide like BioAdvenced shrub protect. Have you used any of these solutions?

You’ve been very helpful with my sago questions in the past. Here’s one more. My 10ft tall plus sago has hundreds of pups on the trunk. They range from 1/2 inch to 3-4 inches and all grow the drones. I cut them off but of course they grow back.any suggestions on how to remove or better stop them from growing . The once handsome sago looks terrible with all the growth on the trunk.
@burkefranklin1

Hi Linda, thanks for another good question. If you want to stop the pups from growing, you must remove the entire nut/ball. The smaller ones should simply come off by grabbing and breaking off the trunk. The larger pups will not be as easy and will likely leave a scar on the trunk for many years to come. You may not want to leave a scar but you have little choice once the pup is a larger size. Go for it !! Burke

Well I just found you and hope you're still answering questions. I just bought a young Sago that has 2 layers of fronds and was wondering when fronds can begin to be removed? Do they have to be at a certain maturity before removing fronds? Can they be removed at any time of the year or just during winter season or something? I'm kind of assuming that trimming them might increase overall growth time. Anyhow I will check out more of your videos and hope you are still making them, thanks!

Hi Anthony, glad you found my channel! When you say you have 2 layers of fronds, I am assuming that means 2 seasons of 2 fronds. Some of the mature plants get a large number of fronds and appear to be 2 sets. Your sago will gain some nutrients from the green fronds, however I usually remove all the fronds once the new fronds have come up and right before they start to open/spread. Sometimes I am later depending on how busy I am 🙂. I hope that answers your question and hope to hear from you again. Thanks for the question 👍 Burke

@@burkefranklin1 Thanks for replying! What I meant about frond layers is that there was a bottom layer of them entirely around the trunk when I bought it, and another entire layer just above the bottom layer. And they were still opening up and complete now. I don't know how many seasons are involved with it since I bought it at Lowes and they don't know anything about it (depending on who you talk to). But i'm gonna be planting it into the ground tomorrow, and just wanted to confirm that removing fronds can occur anytime. I didn't know with a young palm if fronds can be removed anytime or maybe wait until its atleast 2 years old or something. I live in Tennessee and the winters are usually pretty mild with one or 2 snowfalls, so i'm crossing my fingers hoping it will survive. But thanks again!

Can I trim off the male cone before it dries out without damaging my sago? I am hoping if I cut the cone off it will make the sago leaf out more.

Yes, no problem cutting the cone off early. I have found that the fronds come out earlier when you do cut them. Thanks for the good question. Burke

Epsom salt can definitely be used. I have used it but only sparingly. The exact amount and mixture for potted plants versus in the ground plants would require another expert. Thank you so much for the question and for watching my videos. I hope to hear from you again 👍 Burke
