Don't Hinge Your Wrists in the Golf Swing - Sounds Crazy But You Need to Know This!

This is probably the craziest thing you’ve ever heard about the golf swing. And, you’re right, it does sound super crazy…but you need to watch this because it is a game changing golf tip that will get you hitting the ball 20-30 yards farther and more consistent with no effort.
What if I told you that most golfers are using their wrists the wrong way in the golf swing. And, because they use their wrists the wrong way, the “wrist hinge” that they do causes way more harm than good to their golf swing and makes golf shots fly very inconsistent.
There is an easier way to get a full wrist hinge that gets you hitting the ball 20 or 30 yards farther with no effort, and the best part is that you don’t need to think about hinging your wrists at all in the golf swing.

I am Tom Saguto, PGA Member and founder of SagutoGolf. Thank you for visiting my instructional page where you can find how to get on the fast track to improving your golfing abilities. Whether you are a seasoned golfing veteran looking for a quick swing tune-up after an on-course emergency, or a beginner just looking to get the most out of your golfing experience, I am here to help you achieve your golfing goals.
My mission as your swing doctor is simple, to help you maximize your enjoyment in game of golf. Because, let’s face it, golf is a hard game.
My philosophy is wholly based on the student having a fun, meaningful experience in a frustrating and complicated game where potential lifelong golfers either quit because it is too difficult or that they experience some form of swing-related pain or discomfort. I mitigate these problems by focusing entirely on the student’s needs and goals while teaching a golf swing method that ultimately takes stress off of the common pain areas of the swing.

Hey Tom! For years, my dad and I watched various KZfaq golf content and made mediocre progress (at best) with our golf game. Ever since we started watching your videos, we find ourselves hitting the ball better than ever. Your simplified and comedic approach to teaching core gold concepts resonate with people of all ages and skill. When we go to the driving range, we often ask each other "was that hit extra crispy" haha. Thanks to you, my dad and I can actually go out and enjoy golf. Keep up the great work. We will be watching! -Chris

Tom! This is an awesome tip! I have been working on a right arm and right elbow move and now with this tip you have completed a section to my swing puzzle! I'm glad you're enjoying my content, Steve! This swing system is indeed a very body-friendly method. Beyond my own personal experience as a golfer who previously experienced back pain, this is supported by the fact that a significant percentage of my students and online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. And if you'd really like to get on the fast track towards properly learning this swing system in a comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform, please consider my online school. Thank you so much for the last twio videos. Rotating the elbows inwards and this one concerning trail arm. Yesterday I had the most fun I have ever had swinging a club because I was consistant and straight. I tend to have a problem topping the ball, especially as I try harder to hit further. Now I feel that I have a rock solid technique that just needs to be refined and practiced. The elbow rotation would probably be the best tip I have received so far. Thank you.

Yeah - I've been swimming against the current with my trail arm teachings for quite some time, David, because I figured there's probably a something more to why Mr. Hogan said he wished he'd had three right hands. Anyway, I'm very glad to know that this is working well for you!! Keep it crispy! Tom

Its so funny this video popped up in my feed as I just stumbled upon this myself. I was so focused on getting "width" in my backswing and my trail elbow wasn't folding near enough and in fact was flying away from my body. I've been focusing pretty much my entire swing thought on my trail elbow and that fold and it has made a huge difference. And its not just distance, my dispersion has gotten way tighter. You are absolutely on to something here.

In the beginning holes, when my swing was fresh, I was straightening this arm, but as my body was tired, I was unknowingly beginning to hinge and ever so slightly bowed the arm. This was completely destroying my downswing. It is amazing to me Tom how the smallest of adjustments to a swing can make such a difference in ball striking. Your videos are an excellent tool for review after a round. Thank you, Tom and Ben Hogan.

Tom, this video resonated with me very much. I just allow the wrist hinge to naturally occur as the right arm folds in the backswing. I'm done presetting my wrists in the backswing
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 2 ай бұрын
YES! That's how we do it!! We simply "allow" the wrist hinge to happen without forcing anything. If we pre-establish the connections properly in the setup and have a foundational base that facilitates a full centered turn without restriction, then once we've ingrained the correct actions through sequential drilling and repetition we can entrust the motion to the big muscles and allow the arms, wrists, hands, and club to simply go along for the ride and respond accordingly as if on autopilot. The power accumulators - including the proper arm, wrist, and hand action - will then naturally load and fire with no contrived manipulations or precise timing necessary, thereby returning the face to the position pre-established at address. It's called "giving up control to gain control", and it's the formula for consistently blissful ball striking and seemingly effortless power. Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work!! 💪💪 Tom PS: By the way, since my channel's content is connecting well with you, I am confident that you will also benefit from my FREE mini course - “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”.: go.saguto.golf. @SagutoGolf Thanks for this great video. Valuable information. Another way to accomplish a similar back swing, that will really ingrain the feeling, is Nick Faldos pre-set drill. Though i point the face of the club more at the ball, which keeps the club face square for me. This video and Faldos pre-set drill are accomplishing the same thing, it seems to me. Which is a pre-set of the elbow hinge and a little flat to bowed lead wrist thrown into the mix. Result = incredible compression and consistency. peace love light

Really helps to see you hitting a lot of balls. A lot of videos are spent ‘talking’ and you thing ‘great but what does that look like?’ So it’s great to see what you’re talking about. It’s a great swing tip. For, I would combine this with keeping the left wrist flat - I have tended to swing too upright which I think prompts more of a wrist hinge?

You are definitely not alone, Robin! Sadly, many well-intended yet misguided teachings of widely accepted "conventional" instruction - such as excessively strong grips, taking the club straight back, turning the shoulders level while independently lifting the club, shifting into and torquing against a firm trail side, firing the hips, actively hinging the wrists and rolling the hands through impact, etc. - have relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of chronic frustration (and chronic back/knee/hip pain as well). I’m doing my best here to clear these up, put an end to the madness, and get folks on the path towards consistently crispy, powerful, body-friendly ball striking bliss. The power accumulators - including the proper wrist action - will then naturally load and fire with no contrived manipulations or precise timing necessary, thereby returning the face to the position pre-established at address. It's called "giving up control to gain control", and it's the formula for consistently blissful ball striking and seemingly effortless power. Here are a few lessons on this topic: - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z6x8oJloq9ScYYE.html - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iMx4bJmlutSanKc.html - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fdOPhdeErcisaJc.html And here is a link to my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker” where you can learn some key aspects of the swing system I teach in a more structured manner: go.saguto.golf/ Let's get you out of that abyss and into the wonderful world of consistent ball striking bliss!! I keep coming back to this video. I was sceptical at first but it does get the best out of my swing. Tried halfway back then cock wrists, tried early wrist set. But your method produces far more quality shots with better dispersion than the other two. One question, occasionally I'll catch the ground slightly six inches before the ball with driver and spoil the shot. Any suggestions please Tom? Keep up the great content.
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf Жыл бұрын
Indeed, Andy - If we can learn to entrust our swing to the far more powerful big muscles instead of trying to micromanage it with the hands and arms, we are bound to experience significant improvements in distance, accuracy, and consistency. This is when we can get out on the course with a target-focused mindset and truly enjoy the game of golf as opposed to being bogged down with mechanical thoughts and trudging through a hapless round of "golf swing". Oftentimes when golfers are hitting everything well except for the longer clubs - which is quite normal early in the swing change process as a golfer gets used to applying the weight-forward concept to the fairway woods and driver - it can be attributed to one of the following: 1) Their hips are not continuing their lateral slide through impact. This is common with the longer clubs as the wider stance means that the hips have a greater distance to travel. If the hips stop moving laterally towards the target on the downswing then their rotation takes over, inhibiting any further necessary forward weight loading (we should be 80/20 forward halfway down, 90/10 at impact, and 95/5 in the finish), changing the low point and rerouting the club into a steeper angle of attack. This can produce a variety of undesirable results including fat and thin contact, topped shots and popups, straight pulls, and “banana” slices. There is a drill in the Fixing Common Swing Problems section of the online school specific to building in more lateral hip slide in the downswing. Of great importance is keeping your upper torso/head in place (in other words, not moving towards the target from a face-on view) while the hips execute the lateral slide action. This preserves the swing center and the desired shallow AoA. 2) They are not allowing the length of the club to dictate the backswing path and are getting too steep as a result. The shaft length of the longer clubs encourages more of an around the body backswing as established by the shaft plane at address. It may "feel" flat as they take it back along the shaft plane for the first few feet, but as long as they maintain the "weight forward, shoulder down, and hands in" components while allowing the club to work around them, it should put them in the proper position at the top so they can attack the ball from the inside. (A good feel for that lead shoulder is "down and in, under the chin".) There are member video specific to this as well. By the way, here's a link if you're not already a school member and would like to know more about it - saguto.golf Keep up the great work! Tom

Lovely Tom and at 3:22 when freeze framing the point of impact, I was pleasantly surprised that at impact you bend your trailing ankle forward toward the ground - just like Moe Norman! Good on ya' Tom, it's yet another great move you use to hit straighter shots. It made me curious about when you select golf shoes - do you have a criteria in your selection to ensure you can maintain the ankle twist? (that was the first point Moe would wear out his shoes)
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 4 ай бұрын
I appreciate that! This body-friendly, powerful, consistent, low-maintenance swing system I teach is rooted in physics, geometry, and human physiology, and it is modeled on empirical observations of the game's greatest ball strikers, and Mr. Norman is certainly included among them! The lateral targetward action of the hips causes the ankle action that you referenced, and this acts as a governor to prevent a premature over-rotation and thereby enables the player to keep their upper torso square and their swing center intact without having to fight their body. It's also a very powerful move that you will notice with every great ball striker. (Cue up a face-on video of any Tour player, put your finger, mouse pointer, or some other reference tool on their lead hip at address, and then observe the extent to which the hips move laterally past your pointer in the downswing while the head - and thus the swing center - remains in place.) Most amateur golfers already have plenty of the rotational component; they need to build in the lateral hip slide to suppress the early-onset spinout that causes so many to get steep and across the line, or they get stuck, early extend, flip, etc. Here are some lesson videos specific to this topic: - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i9lmnbaYstyunYE.html - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mqhkfNeDmM3Zd4k.html - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f5uIjMp81Na4kmg.html Thanks again for your message! Actually, Ronnie, I've been swimming against the current with my trail arm teachings for quite some time, because there's a good reason why Mr. Hogan said he wished he'd had three right hands. Sadly, "conventional" instruction chose to ignore the proper use of our dominant hand and arm, and generations of golfers have suffered with chronic weak slices as a result. I'm glad you enjoyed this episode!! Tom

With this wrist hinge and a good hip turn, i'm with a 3/4 swing way higher, longer and more accurate👌

What "feels" like a 3/4 swing is likely all that you need, Barney. No need to go beyond your body's natural stopping point and risk a breakdown in the motion. Keep up the great work!! Tom

Hi Tom, thank you for your many instructional videos, great work. Notwithstanding, please advise why so many of you golf pros don't seem to know the difference between wrist cock and wrist hinge. Confusing when listening intently to golf instruction when golf pros make the mistake of confusing us already battling students re: wrist cock & wrist hinge. Rgds Greg King - Australia

Hi Greg, I'm glad you are enjoying my content. If less confusion is what you seek, then please consider my online school. It will make for a far more efficient, superior, and enjoyable learning process rather than haphazardly trying to piece things together through these channel videos that jump around randomly from topic to topic. The school is where you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step, position-by-position from setup to finish, along with diagnostic and corrective tools for resolving common swing, contact, and ball flight issues, and much more. Thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result, and their unsolicited testimonials tell the story quite well: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. At just $14.99/month or $149.99 per year the value in terms of what you get for that price point is beyond comprehension, and based on proven results it represents by far the best golf instruction deal on the planet. And if you'd like to first "dip a toe in the water" prior to diving into the school, then here is a link to my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ That is where you can learn some key aspects of the swing system I teach in a more structured manner. Tom: When do you fold the arm in the backswing and do you fold it to the max? I have trouble consistently folding it and knowing when to release it. Thanks for all the great videos!
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 2 жыл бұрын
If you keep your upper arm/chest connections intact and do not allow the elbows to separate any further apart then they were at address, then the trail arm should naturally fold to 90 degrees in response to the swing motion and the weight of the club. You should not have to force this to happen, and if you are finding that to be the case then there is likely a disconnect somewhere. By the way, if you are the same Greg Hill who is in the online school, then let's continue any further swing specific dialogue in the members forum. TS

Your swing has improved my 8-3 iron play. I just can't make it translate to the driver. You "say" it's essentially the same, but Irons and Drivers are different swings. I do appreciate your videos, I looked deep into your old stuff and what you've shared, absolutely works with the irons. I can now hit my 3, when I never could in the past. Thank you!

Have you seen Tom’s driver video? It’s a good one with great tips. Also with the driver do not put weight on your front leg as you would with irons(if you follow Tom’s instruction) instead stay pretty level and just slightly bump your hip a couple of inches to the target. Spread your legs a bit wider in your stance so you can shallow out your club path, ball position shouldn’t change. Then do everything else in your backswing and follow through as Tom instructs. Hit it with the wrath of God. Hope this helps

@J PP - I'm very glad to learn of your improvement with your iron play! Yes - it is essentially the same swing for every club in your bag. There are just some minor setup differences for the driver - for example, a more forward ball position that is even with the inside of the lead heel, a little more weight forward at address (60/40 rather than 55/45 as you would have for the short and mid irons), and the hands pushed out an extra inch or so away from the body. Beyond that, the longer shaft dictates that the club should naturally work more around the body on a flatter plane than what you would have for a shorter-shafted club. Also, due to the wider stance for the driver, the hips have a greater distance to travel. If the hips stop moving laterally towards the target on the downswing then their rotation takes over, changing the low point and rerouting the club. This can produce a variety of undesirable results including fat and thin contact, topped shots and popups, straight pulls, and “banana” slices. If you type the word "drive" into this channel's search bar you will find some related content. Really, though, the online school is the best place to learn this swing properly and sequentially through your entire bag in a comprehensive, structured environment.
