No sooner had we made up our minds on setting sail and heading east, then we bared witness to a horrible sight. A totally crippled sailing yacht gets dismasted just outside Dartmouth and limps back into the marina.
This episode is also going to be a bit different in that we are doing a bit of a one off and sharing this leg of the adventure with no music! I know, I can't quite believe it either, given how much I love adding music to the story, but lots of people have asked to hear the sounds of sailing and the ambient noises in the harbour, etc, and so we have decided to make what will no doubt be quite a rare offering, but one we hope those who like the idea of the odd episode without my eccentric taste in classical music will enjoy 😁🙏🏻⛵️⛵️

Lofty heights have been achieved! Sailing Cadoha is now officially my favourite sailing channel and as such; I would like to bore you with a couple of comments. Music; I think you do a great job with it. Some channels get it very wrong but you don't. It is nice however to hear the unsullied ambient sounds of your experiences at times. Big deal; every trip to sea should be regarded as a big deal. No exceptions. So you are quite right to think of it in this way in my humble opinion. More sailing; sure, but I love the detail you put into your shore trips and daily 'doings'. It ain't broke, so don't fix it. Thanks guys.

Great show guys! Thanks for keeping it real. Personally, it's not the music, it's the sailing, the navigation, the problem solving, the seasickness and above all, trying to get Hank to do a 5am sh*t before spending 8 hours at sea! Honest and true! Keep it up guys, I'm learning through your experiences and gaining confidence all the time! Mat

Good job again! Apparently the dolphins do that to save energy swimming by being pushed by the boat compressing the water in front of the bow, though to me I think they do it because they enjoy the stimulation and interaction.

I have enjoyed your fine music selection and your narration - some the best on you tube . It's nice that Hank takes us on a tour off the boat so we can see the sights . All things are of interest - it's nice to see the pubs , restaurants , stores , harbors and points of interest, all part of cruising .Sailing it's self is fun and interesting but you sail to go places and see the sights . I think you guys have a nice balance in your videos - well done ! Say hello to Hank for me - looks like he's starved for attention !!!!!

I noticed that too. The clicks and whistles were great to hear; echo location at work. Hello from Aus. My concern with your preventer is the strength of the boom end fitting. Better to use that hole just as a locator and take the line around the boom for strength.

Scotland was (IS) totally awesome, and the trip was made all the more special by the fact that I'd just done one of those my heritage DNA tests and just as we were about to set sail from Scotland, I discovered that my great, great grandmother came from Scotland, and married my great, great grandfather from Ireland, and just like that, my ginger hair was explained, ha ha. But it only added another level of connection to what was an amazing trip.

Loved the dolphin footage. We saw a lot down the West Country this year and I love that little barking noise they make. Stugeron is what I use for seasickness. I was sick on my very first cross-channel ten years ago, but never again after being recommended stugeron. Works every time for me. My husband just doesn't get seasick. Lucky him!

Happy to hear it worked for you! We have some, but we've been really lucky with seasickness this year, it's not really affected us much, just a couple of very short lived moments and then all was well again right after (being sick). It's just the worst when the sickness lingers all days, or as was the case with our Biscay crossing last year, daaaaaaaaaays 😖

1. Preventer. Tie a massive bowline loop so you can easily reach the knot to de-rig it from deck even with the boom out. 2. Uncontrolled gybe - always have at least 2 crew who can steer downwind! 3. Rig failure - get it under control as soon as possible. If it's over the side it can end up through the side. 4. Always better to be in harbour wishing you were out there, than out there wishing you were in harbour. But you've got to get the experience somehow. Goosneck is the weak point so hope that fails rather than the whole mast! (I sheared my gooseneck sailing into Weymouth due to, it turned out, to point 2!!). I'm sure it's not commoplace, and I was arriving from the other direction. Safe sailing!

Great movie chaps and well done you have leveled up for sure. On the subject of boom preventors I have the same type of boom with a hole in the end of it, ( i think it even says preventor) on doing my yachtmaster offshore exam in Portugal ( blowing about force 8 ) the examineer took me to one side and suggested to me that I lash the preventor around and around the ali boom end a number of times and not to trust the forged metal end as the boom as is a lot stronger than the end with the hole in it. He then went on to chill our blood with stories of the end of the booms exploding under a extreme crash gybes. He said he had never seen the end of a boom fail, and when old sea dogs see your boat rigged belt and braces your get the nodd of aproval. lol Just a suggestion, keep up the good work love the films.

Great video and I for one love hearing the sounds of the wind, waves and the boat. Not that I don’t like music but a good balance is better IMHO. The dolphin footage was fab' as you say, never gets old. Was that actual dolphin clicks you picked up or added after? Prevent or is a good idea and taking the line right forward is best, I could t see where you attached yours to at the front. My advice would be to make the bowline a long one. So if for any reason you want to untie it and you cannot pull the boom amidships you can reach the knot from the shrouds. So make the loop on the bowline so the knot is around where the kicker attaches to the boom. Great sail and fair winds for next time. Love Hank swaying in tune with the boat' what a star. Andy UK

Always remember your 7 P's that's a life lesson😁. Use of a preventer to stop accidental Jibe is a must. Even on calmish days with the wind blowing us along we always fit a preventer when racing. As for potential failures it's endless👀 chain plates can look fine but be rotten inside, rigging can be weakened internally that needs testing every 3 years or so. Unless a millionaire's weekend boat then just timely maintenance. I have no idea on history of mine, but know it has been sat for min 5 years so i will slowly work through everything🤢

I'm sure that you will experiment with incremental improvements, but with all due respects to those making these comments, please ignore the "less music" and "more sailing" comments. There are 200 other sailing channels that can provide that. But what you have been doing is not only creative, but unique on a sailing channel. If Carly had not become such a good sailor and you had not have been doing such a great job editing, producer Hank would have already let you know.

You are lucky, you have an attachment point on you boom for the preventer, you did that spot on. I take the line right forward to the bow cleats, around both cleats (not through the eye) and back down the other side of the boat to the unused winch. its a bit of a pain to set up but it gives me confidence it will work. I have seen a rig fall form a badly performed jibe. The mast just snapped at the point the boom attached, that's how you jibe said the skipper, its a racing jibe, enough said. I used to teach sailing in the med, students would ask me where we would see dolphins, I would say, Lyme Bay. I have lost count of how many times I have crossed Lyme, dolphins every time, without fail. You didn't actually go through the race at Portland did you? Great video, thanks.

The seasick inducing movement is because you’re on a run with a following sea. It give the boat a corkscrew movement which is bad for seasickness. And the increase in wind speed on turning towards Portland is apparent wind. You were running away from the wind at ~7kn, then suddenly turning into it at, so the apparent wind speed will rise 10-15kn depending on your speed before and after

Run preventer to bow cleat outside of everything through legs of cleat on same side of boom, then through legs of bow cleat on opposite side then back to stern cleat on opposite side to boom. Use midship cleat if you have to, then tighten preventer with boom in position, and fully tension preventer using main sheet in opposition to preventer, to lock boom in position

Thanks for that. We ran it to the bow cleat and then back to a cockpit cleat in the end. What's the benefit of coming across the boat and back up the other side? 😁⛵️
@philipkenneth24
@philipkenneth24 3 жыл бұрын
Good question. In my years as a YMI, I’ve not been asked that! It does spread the load across more of the strong points on the boat, ( 2 bow cleats and 1 stern cleat, and avoids a sharp turn on the preventer line through a bow cleat and back down the same side, so should you need to release it the preventer is less likely to jam just at the wrong time.

You need a jibe controller so if you jibe the boom can still come across. If you secure the boom forward and jibe by mistake the main will fill from behind and you will broach. In a following see that could be catastrophic.

You will see in our next video (the one I'm editing now) he did have a scary moment in the Needles channel, in 30knts of wind, with the wind right behind us, we had the main locked out with preventer and main sheet and ended up lifted by a wave, in boiling cauldron looking water, which started to turn the boat broadside. We were both hearts in our throats for a second and now wonder if the main being fixed as it was played a part in that spot?

I was just thinking as we watched Carly at the helm in that corkscrew sea..... she’s doing well.... spoke to soon. But these seas get everyone. You could try a slightly different course ie gybe every hour or so if the motion is improve by being on a very deep reach. You might go a little faster too so that the 20deg off dead down wind extra distance gets you there at the same time and no chance of accidentally gybe. Nice sail otherwise! Cheers Warren

Thanks Warren, will certainly bare that in mind next time. That sea got both of us in the end, but we were also both fine shortly after being sick, it wasn't one of those long drawn out sea sickness affairs, we both had grand appetites by the time we got to shore, and even more so by the time we'd also taken Hank for a walk 😁⛵️⛵️⛵️

Good to see the three of you out on the water. That mast could be a timely warning, alongside C’s seasickness...maybe chalk up a few more hours on board in different conditions before heading off around the world. A very experienced sailor saw his mast hit by lightening, destroyed his electrics and blew a hole in his boat as the mast wasn’t grounded. We hope he is OK as he posted a vlog then cut off. Sailing into Freedom is a reminder that this boating business can look idyllic...but the risks are considerable. To everyone on the sea..stay safe⛵️⛵️🙏

What a great idea with the harbor sounds! Could you record a few hours of halyard slapping and wind whistling to play as back ground audio when you are off the boat walking Hank? It would bring back some ... "memories'! :) Actually you should do in your videos what ever you want to do. You are the one who's success depends on your ingenuity. Experiment and do what YOU enjoy. If we didn't already like what you are doing, we wouldn't be following you. I have't done any sound mixing yet but you can add complementary music (an appropriate kind) on a separate track so you don't overwrite the sea sounds like gull poop splatting on the deck, or the hull scraping against the piling as you back out. The volume can be reduced so it is truly in the background. Did you outfit Hank with "foulies"?! Look into trying a boom brake. It's almost hassle-free.
@CadohaAdventures
@CadohaAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
We had a quick look at some boom brake devices, but not too in-depth yet, but am keen to look at any and all options that can help prevent these kinds of accents happening to us. Hank does now own his own foul gear to go with his new life jacket, he's a tougher sailor than both of us 😂😂 Carly and I both ended up being sick at one point on this trip and Hank just stared at us as if to say 'lightweights'.

c7:30... If you're not going to use a boom brake then make sure you can control the movement of the boom at the exact time it needs to go over. Otherwise you risk getting slammed down when the boom moves leeward too late. I'd recommend a figure-8 boom brake, and the ones climbers use are MUCH cheaper and still super strong.

My experience is that you need to get more active to combat sea sickness until you get sea legs -try helming more when going downwind and she gets the roll on. That way you focus on something that relates to horizon and how the boat moves and limits the conflicting information between inner ear and eyes. Also, make the bowline in the preventer much longer so you can easily reach the know from the cockpit without having to bring the boom all the way in. HTH. Cute dog!
@CadohaAdventures
@CadohaAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
This will likely sound a bit special, but why would you need to grab the bowling on the back of the boom from the cockpit, or at all? I thought you used it for a controlled gybe, then let it out the other side as you gybe and then re rig the preventer along the new side of the boat? I was under the impression that the bowline just remained where it is all the time you have the preventer system set up?
@SpiralDiving
@SpiralDiving 3 жыл бұрын
@@CadohaAdventures Your preventer should be rigged with a loop long enough to be easily reached from the side deck without having to pull the boom in very far and you not having to lean out over the water. Indeed, the preventer needs to be released before the jibe can take place and sailing down wind with the boom mostly sheeted in to reach the preventer knot is just asking for an uncontrolled while you are actually trying to untie the preventer (very unsafe). With the boom more out this is less likely to happen. A longer loop also gives the opportunity to easily rig an emergency mainsheet if something goes wrong with the normal mainsheet. There may be some additional reasons... HTH

In my 12 yrs of sailboat ownership, I learned a very valuable piece of information that I have not seen mentioned here. ELECTRONICS ON BOATS OPERATE ON SMOKE. If you see the smoke escaping, the instrument is dead and usually a replacement needs to be purchased. Sometimes a skillful technician can replace the smoke so that it will function again. But do not open the case and try to fix it yourself. Electronics are NOT DIY. If you are inquisitive (as I was) and you open the case on a functioning instrument,, and the smoke starts escaping, just close the case a purchase a replacement

Aye m8’s, first I must say that your work with bombastic music has been excellent - but this is the real shit! And very well handled. 🎚 Good on you to try it out. It sure gives more nerve to the story telling. This doesn’t mean that you should exclude music from now on, maybe more like using well chosen strophes when emphasising is in place. Anyways I really appreciate your mix of humour, anxiety and victorys combined with good story telling. Keep it coming 👍🏽

Carly is generally better at parking than me (should have seen the state of my old van vs her car) and I'm a little bit faster and stronger, which means I'm probably more useful on the pontoon, in the off chance that something goes a little bit astray when we come in to dock, I can sprint and push/pull where needed 😁⛵️⛵️

A tip for night sailing: don't buy a bigger torch, and ditch the one you've got! Let you eyes adjust to the dark, it takes some time and just a few seconds of exposure to white light and you have to start all over again. Turn off cabin lights so no light leaks up through companionway. If you need light for chartwork etc use a red light, it won't spoil your night vision. Poor Carly, tying to avoid the lobster pots and you're blinding her with your torch. On a clear night when your eyes have fully adjusted the stars are unbelievable, not something you can fully share on KZfaq, you have to be there to experience it.

It is great to do preventative measures to deal with loosing your mast but if it does happen, a big danger is the mast putting a hole in the side of your boat. Make sure you have a way of cutting the standing rigging quickly to get the mast away from your hull. As your rigging is thick guage a hack saw will be too slow. Some big bolt cutters might be ok or there are some specialised devices for this job. Something you should have ready to use in an emergency incase the worst happens.
