We attempt a DIY installation of new navigation instruments for our 38 year old sail boat. We ended up trying to tackle a huge range of boat projects this winter and many of them 'evolved' into many more jobs than we expected, including this one. But, no one said owning and running a sailing boat was going to be easy.
SUPER USEFUL LINKS
EDITED IN - Several people have asked about the insanely expensive iPad holder which Carly loves, which is a three part system for us to mount it on our hand rail, but for those who have money to burn, here are the details.
Part 1: amzn.to/368xrsS
Part 2: amzn.to/3xaYjnH
Part 3: www.amazon.co.uk/ROKK-Adjusta...
1) The cheap bracket we used to mount the instrument panel can be found here: amzn.to/2UHsRz4
2) If you'd like to support out film making efforts then be sure to check out our Patreon page here: / sailingcadoha
3) To learn more about us you can also head to our website which is www.cadoha.com
4) Carly has started an amazing online business selling up cycled products that she's made herself, if you like to see what's available from her shop then you can find everything here: www.cadoha.com/etsy-shop
5) If you'd like to check out the legend that is Mads and his channel, where he totally rebuilds the same make and model boat as we have, then be sure to check him out here: / madsdahlke
6) Lastly you can check out our Instagram page here: / sailingcadoha

Hi guys We've just stumbled across your channel As two expats from Sussex living in NZ we have just had an offer accepted on our first keeler. Our plan is very similar to yours. Boat work is the common denominator for all the channels we have seen. Our boat is an 80s child too. We are looking forward to starting our project if our survey comes back with no major issues. Hopefully we will meet on the equator with us going up as you come down. Love your work and style. Keep it up. Cheers Nick n Deb.

Nice job! Very clean & smart, did a similar job a few years back & had the same rubbish over companionway bodge. Great idea using the windlass as an electric winch. My only input would be to pleeease tie your tools on to yourself/bucket especially the drill. Learnt the hard way myself and luckily was only a window & not someone’s head. Maybe see you in Falmouth if you pop one more port to the west! Kettles always boiled on the Pilot boat! Look forward to the next one!

All I can say is that in November when I first started going up, I was close to useless and spent half the time clung on like a terrified koala. After an entire winter going up over and over and over again, I’ve remarkably become less scared. Apparently it’s what psychologists call ‘exposure therapy’. I only hope that doesn’t wear back off as I’m really pleased that I’m somewhat capable of going up there and functioning now 😁😁

As someone who did tower work for a while -- everything takes 2-3 times as long up there than it does on the ground. I'll second tying your tools to your bag. It lets you use one, then let it dangle while you move on to something else. The other thing I like doing is only taking the size wrenches, etc. that I needed. Anything you don't need in the tool bag just clutters it up so you can't find what you do need. And, have a light line trailing from you to the ground. That way when you realize you forgot something you really did need, the people on the ground can send it up.

You two are doing top notch work. Carly clearly is more elegant going up the mast than you... dont take it to heart ! now... just a thought and I might get ripped by others for this suggestion... I did it on my mast and have found it to help when trying to get things sorted at or above the top of the mast. I drilled two mast steps (one opposite the other) just below my knee level so that I can step onto them. Gives me better visibility and I am not wobbling around as I do when sitting in the chair/harness. If anyone has done this would love the feedback.

Great find on the coax able, only concern is what caused that as that is not normal wear and tear for coax, something rubbed against it to cause that wear, may want to guesstimate how far up the mast that wear was and see if anyone installed some extra long screws that my be rubbing on the coax, being as you used the existing coax to pull the new through, the problem may still exist, and as Mr. Murphy was a sailor, it will go wrong and reappear when you need it most, you know at night in a storm making an approach to an unfamiliar port while in a shipping lane, with cargo ships laden with the latest stuff. Sorry for the length of the post, just struck me as you found the symptom of the problem not the problem, and as it is 4 times cheaper to fix things correctly the first time might as well do it right.

@CadohaAdventures
@CadohaAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
Yes we did have to calibrate the direction of it. You can either get someone to hold it in the right direction (as we did too) or just motor somewhere at full speed when there’s no wind, or just point into the wind and set it, I guess?
@Jackanory222
@Jackanory222 3 жыл бұрын
how did you seal the hole in the tubing under the wind and depth gauges, and the hole thru the deck? the issue is preventing any rain or spray going down the SS tube and through the plastic tubing.....the likes of a silicone sealant wont maintain a seal on those wires for very long if that is what you did. Also, I'd have recommended painting some epoxy on the exposed deck core if the wires are left to go thru the deck there. My input would be to use a deck wire flange either inside the SS tubing if you can find one to fit or bring the wires out at the bottom of the tubing and go thru a flange between the tubing and the binnacle.

Hey thanks for the feedback. I actually chipped out the old cracks and used one of those 'gel coat repair kits' (colour didn't even nearly match, but it's covered. I hammered hose into there hole which was the entire length of the hole drilled and then used a sealant called CT1 all round the top of the hose and then under the leg of the handy holdy thing. There's a fairly generous amount of it applied. I think if I did the job over again I'd drill a bigger hole, fill the entire thing with epoxy and then re drill a hoe through the epoxy, which would then protect the core and not use a hose, or add a hose too to go totally over kill, because,Iguesswhy not?

How happy are you with the NASA INSTRUMENTS? I live in the States and they are not well known or distributed here, and even the registered dealers say it’s a “special order” no returns. I think it’s because they are much cheaper than the big brands here so the dealers make less money. Are the compatible with NMEA 2000 GPS systems. Thank you

Could you please let us know what the ridiculous expensive contraption to hold the iPad is? I’ve been looking for one for ages! Thanks in advance

If you hate money that much 😬😬 then here are the details, it's a three part kit. To be fair it looks like a solid bit of kit, just raised an eyebrow when Carly. told me how much an iPad holder cost, when in my mind I was expecting about £20-£25 for something like that. Perhaps I'm just out of touch. Woot! Woot! Great job! 🤩 But, um, hello? Hank? 😳😢 Btw... please, please, PLEASE... when you are up the mast all tools should really be tied off to something with a length of cord. Dropping a drill or hammer or something on the deck (or someone’s head) from that height can be rather devastating.

Comments about La Vagabond made me 😂, you don’t even sail, the wife does though, could be interesting if ever you leave sight of land, you are no Robin Knox Johnson but the the wife without you has potential of leaving sight of land 😂

No argument from me there, certainly no Robin Knox Johnson. Just a couple, living on a boat, exploring good old Blighty. Although, between you and I, we did lose sight of land in Lyme Bay last year 😏

No, we worked all winter to save up more money, and like I said in our last video, we spent all of our upgrade money and haven’t finished all the jobs we wanted to, so we’ll get jobs again this coming winter, save more money and do more upgrades.

You are going to regret putting the instruments there. When you are cruising with the autohelm or windvane you don't sit at the wheel! They are by far best where they were!!! 😎😃😜

We tend to be laying down (lounging) with our backs against the most aft. part of the cockpit, so it seemed like a logical place to put them for us? I'm also thinking about setting everything up to be able to repeat onto tablets too, perhaps this winter.

Agreed. I know some like it, but I find it wearing at the start of every video. It's fine on the channel intro video, but it should be re-thought for every other occasion. What should be cut is that 1min 50 sec of a mistake at the end.
