I was just thinking how Sir Robin Knox-Johnson might have been cursing like, well, a sailor, under those same conditions. He'd have triumphed as well but the blood pressure alone! I can only imagine. Captain Cook was an even keeled receiver of unruly conditions as well. Is Captain Holmes of Quaker stock as well? Richard Nixon aside, they are a VERY patient bunch.

45 degrees heled over and... it's a little windy outside. U don't say? Those new sails have given the Pickle newfound power Sam. She is just pounding through those waves. The lines & reefing points and maybe a slight rigging tune, new block & tackle, some clutches, find out what's going on with that winch- you'll be ok. Just a little reset. Very kool kite foil cam action. That was sick. Stay safe out there Sam, re-check your lifelines & attachment points- cause the Pickle can fly now. Safety first always, Speed comes second as a byproduct. Keep tuning on Pickle, she has more to give you.

This is so pleasant to watch, Sam. You were the first one who sparked my interest in sailing a few years ago. This October, I completed my practical exam while sailing around the entire Peloponnese. We were at the exact spot in Elafonisos where you filmed this video (on the other side of the bay, experiencing 45kts gusts during the night). Thanks for sharing your journey!

Here's an idea for a bit of filler which I think everyone would enjoy, even though your videos are already so enjoyable. Is there an underwater camera you could use when there is a visible bottom or even obvious fish to see? How often are there fish under you? You spend nearly all of your time above the water - - hence the "boat". But, help us imagine the water beneath your "boat", like you did when you improved use of your maps in your videos so that we could really follow you. Thank you for that, BTW.
@tonysmario817
@tonysmario817 8 ай бұрын
luckily your boat and rig is in tip top condition...you would hate to break something in those conditions. there's nothing easier in modern sailing than reefing the headsail!! ease the sheet momentarily...a few cranks on the furler...reset the sheet. done. in the old days you had to go on deck and wrestle the genoa on deck...then set a smaller jib. when the wind died you had to do it all again in reverse!! don't be so lazy. furl your headsail to match your apparent wind.

Those new sails were awesome in the storm. I have a question, Sam, in a storm like that isn't it better to take your main sail down? I'm a novice and I have learned a lot from your channel, but still a rookie.
@tyrotrainer765
@tyrotrainer765 8 ай бұрын
Hi, the main is important for stability and steering. In strong winds, especially sailing upwind, you need to balance the weather helm produced by the main, and the lee helm produced by the jib. Usually as the wind picks up you start reefing the main; when you are fully reefed if the lee helm becomes excessive you roll in some jib, or change down a size or more. Some main up helps dampen the roll of the boat. Hope that helps.
