Hi Peter, we basically live three separate lives: one in the UK, one in Italy, and one on the boat. We should be back in the UK now but that's not possible for the time being. We hope that everyone can get back to their lives soon and in the meantime we are immensely grateful for all the blessings we have, and for our health and the health of those closest to us. We planted another batch of trees in February - taking the total number of trees we have planted thanks to our Patrons up to 4,770. Many of those trees are mangroves, and the reforested areas once again become safe breeding grounds for many species of fish. So in a very small way, we are playing our part in saving our oceans. Cheers, Chris, Rossella & Emma :-)

Hi Chris, Totally agree with you on cash, I also buy everything in stores, not online if possible, which 99.9% of the time it is. I use several local model shops for all my hobby supplies, even if I have to spend more, I much rather go into a shop for a browse, or to order stuff in via them than waiting at home for parcel deliveries, Cheers Rich

Anchoring off Deal is pretty unusual but traditionally the Downs (between the coast and the Goodwin Sands) was a roadstead, and whole fleets would anchor there to await favourable winds to go down channel.

This just reminded me how tiring single-handed sailing can become. So many things to keep track of, then passage planning for the next day. There have been a few times I have crept into an anchorage at 11pm, set the alarm for 4am and then finalised a passage plan (some of which I had roughed out during the previous passage), then try to get the head down while you are still buzzing a bit... the alarm goes off and you feel like you only just shut your eyes! Fair play Chris.

Interesting plan to anchor off Deal fishing pier , never done that! But done a number of Calais to Dover /ramsgate trips. I assume you were trying to get to a good place to take advantage of the tides in your crossing.. I'll be curious if we find out why. All my crossing were in small slow boats with small engines but usually in summer so the short daylight problem effected your decisions too. Your 6+ knots Av should help..... Cheers Warren
@SailingBritaly
@SailingBritaly 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Warren, the original plan was to anchor in Dover Harbour (which used to be free) but they have banned that now (Ggghhhrrrrrr). In the end the Goodwin Sands anchorage worked out much better as it set me up to cross the TSS at a different point from the ferries and that combined with me letting the tide sweep me Westwards meant I didn't have the problem of ferries coming up from my stern and bow the whole time (there was still plenty of shipping to deal with travelling in the TSS lanes but I kept pretty well away from the ferries. Anchoring is my default and I only use ports and marinas when I have to. A) Because anchoring is free - both monetarily and in a philosophical sense. B) Because I like to do as I please without having to ask anyone's permission or work around other people's schedules. C) Because although it can be rolly at anchor (It was later on during this night) the big rolling motion you get at anchor is less annoying to me than the unnatural snatching motion you get when you're tied up and a swell comes in to a port (Ramsgate was awful for this at certain states of tide), or when passing boats create wake. I was glad to be in Ramsgate during the F9 though... 😂 Yes the short days were an issue, it was pitch black when I set off on the Channel crossing, but as soon as I got out of the sandbanks I had some searoom to play with so it was a lot less stressful than my first night sail on the river. I filmed a passage planning video from a shorter leg later on this trip (will be a future video after this mini series is finished, all being well) and if the reception to that is good then I will make another one covering my Channel crossing passage plan. Take care, Chris 👍

Hey Britalians! We hope this finds you well and that this video was is a nice break from everything that is happening in the world at the moment. Here are some Questions & Answers: *Where are you now and is everyone ok?* ---------- We are in Italy in quite an isolated house in the mountains. We have been here in self-isolation then lockdown for 5 weeks and 5 days so far. We are blessed that none of our immediate family members have contracted 'it'. *When was this video filmed?* ---------- October 2019 *Where were Rossella & Emma and why weren't they on board with you?* ---------- We decided that the most efficient thing for us to do was for me to 'finish' the refit on my own and sail over to mainland Europe ASAP, so that we would be set up for our journey to the Med... I would never have done this crossing with Rossella & Emma on board in the unsettled October weather. *Why didn't you take crew with you?* ---------- This was something I felt that I had to do alone. There were several different reasons for this: 1) To push my boundaries and learn a lot - quickly. 2) The weather was always going to be dodgy in October, and I didn't want to put anyone else in a situation where they may not have been comfortable. 3) I could do whatever I wanted and whatever I felt comfortable doing, without having to consider other people (i.e. I'm going to anchor off Deal Pier, go to bed at 00:30 and wake up at 03:30 to set off across the channel for the first time ever on a sailing boat, on a day when a Force 9 is forecast as being inbound... I would never have done this if I had crew on board, whatever their experience level, as this would have been far too Captain Blye-esque. What this would have meant was my one week solo trip would have taken about 3 weeks with crew, waiting in ports for decent weather windows. I was in a rush to get home to hug my wife & daughter so single-handing was far more convenient. 4) I only had myself, the boat and the world around us to worry about. As soon as there is another human in the mix, there is a whole extra layer of things to think about. *Why didn't you get someone with lots of experience to skipper the boat for you?* ---------- Because I'm the skipper, and the best way to learn to do anything in life is to just get stuck in and start doing it. I am not completely inexperienced: I have worked offshore on ships & platforms since 2006, I was a boat importer & dealer for 3 years (I learnt a LOT during this time but had very little time for sailing), we've owned about a dozen used boats over the years (having never paid for a survey on any of them and having never sold one for less than we paid for it), we sailed our last boat in the Med for 4 years, I have completed the RYA Yachtmaster theory exam, but this trip was my first proper experience of tidal sailing. *If you could go back and do this again, would you go solo?* ---------- Absoflippinglutely yes! I loved every minute of this little adventure and I probably learned more in a week on my own than I would have in a year of sailing with crew. *Will you still be making sailing videos in the current climate?* ---------- We really, really hope that we can continue making our videos... Footage isn't a problem as we have lots of videos which we have already recorded but haven't had a chance to edit yet, plus we have a whole series of Financial Freedom videos to film where we will explain exactly how we have arranged our lives to allow us to afford Britaly and give us the freedom to go cruising several consecutive months each year - without having to give up our lives on land. If you want to go cruising, this is crucial information, as this is almost universally the biggest hurdle to people who would like to go off sailing the world. We have (understandably) lost some Patrons recently, but we have had existing Patrons jump up a tier, and have welcomed some new Patrons aboard recently too, so for now we can keep dedicating our time to keeping these videos coming. We sincerely hope that this will continue, in which case you can expect our videos to keep coming. If you enjoy our videos or find them informative and you'd like us to keep making them, we have set things up in such a way that anyone can sign up to join our 🌟Patreon Crew🌟 for just $1 per month. We don't need a lot of funds to keep this channel going, we just need enough so that we're not left too much out of pocket for the time we spend making them. If you want to help ensure we keep our videos coming you can sign up here: www.patreon.com/SailingBritaly If not, don't worry, we really appreciate each and every one of our viewers. If the videos stop at some point, you'll know we just had to concentrate on the other things we do in life which may not be our number one passion, but which pay much better than making sailing videos. If the status quo remains, the videos will keep coming, so fingers crossed!... *I've got a problem I think you can help me solve, how do I get in touch with you you?* ---------- We would love to help you and we are now offering one-to-one paid videocalls here: sailingbritaly.com/videocalls You only pay for the minutes we spend together on the videocall, and we can achieve a lot in a very short call, so this can work out to be very cost-effective compared to other options. (Our $5 + per month Patrons get a huge 50% off these videocalls). *Do you have some free goodies for me?* ---------- Yes, as a matter of fact yes we do: Get a FREE PDF ebook with details of over 3500 knots & Splices here: bit.ly/knotsPDF Be first in line to receive a FREE Financial Freedom PDF which explains how we can afford to go cruising, and how YOU can too! Ok then, that's it for this video. We read each and every comment so please keep them coming. We may not be able to reply to all of them, but we try our best to. Wherever you are in the world, stay safe, look after your family and we're thinking of you all. Fair winds! Chris, Rossella & Emma 😊

Hi Chris, one thing that worries me about your solo sail, is your Jackstays. They are positioned like most yachts, along both sides and, given the length of your safety lines, you are definitely going in the water, if you have a mishap. This has been concerning me for a while, with my own rig and, has been the subject of debate, on other forums. I have decided to re-rig my jackstay, along the centreline, thus ensuring, as far as possible, that I stay, on board. Any thoughts? Great vids, by the way and good, that you can stay in touch with he family. Stay safe. By the way, we once anchored off Blackpool beach, on a west coast trip, a good few years ago.
@SailingBritaly
@SailingBritaly 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Keith, my jacklines were a last-minute addition and there is definitely scope for improvement. I had considered getting dragged along in the water and I had 2 box cutters in my jacket pockets at all times to cut myself free if that becane necessary. I had a PLB on my belt at all times and I’ve done several offshore sea survival courses over the years so I’m confident I would have survived a MOB situation. The jacklines were there as a last resort though and the way I see it they would have been one extra layer of protection helping to keep me on the boat if I’d have tripped or been hit by a big green wave. In my mind my imperfect jackline setup was preferable to not having jacklines at all, which is the approach taken by a significant number of other sailors. I will get a better system in place in the future. There’s no reason not to anchor off Blackpool so good on you and I’m very glad to hear it’s been done! Cheers, Chris 👍

Hi Ray, I don't really know much about it yet. The tranceiver a very old Autohelm unit and I haven't had much of a chance to get into using it properly as yet. Having a RADAR unit already installed and working is a big bonus, but I'm sure it will really come to the fore one I've learned how to use it to its full capabilites (I know how to use SONAR units and I know it will be similar, but every system takes quite a bit of coaxing to get the most out of them and I've never spent more than about 15 minutes playing around with this up to now.) Yes. Single handing is good. Do u listen to Matt rutherfords “single handed sailing podcast?”. He talks about the fact you could live a long time drifting around the equator in the doldrums as there is plenty of rain and fish ....I m a Canadian that keeps his boat in USA because it’s cheaper than in my hometown where it is USD 1000 per month for a 40 foot slip and it’s hard to find one. Because of the virus I decided to move my boat frm USA to Canada and crossed the US border right before they shut it down to non essential travel. I was too tired to sail that day but at least I was near my boat. The next day I sailed to a Canadian anchorage but phoned nine marinas to find a new home. There were an estimated 80-100 boats that left my marina all competing for a few available spots but I was stressed because I thought the medical officials would force closure of marinas then I’d really be in trouble.I was stuck near a remote island phoning marina after marina. I finally found a spot on a private dock up the Fraser River. The point is singlehanding is a great learning experience all the time! But it’s good to have crew to yell at!

My view on the use of self serve checkouts is the same as yours. I disagree with Andreas. His view that the displaced checkout staff are being put to work in other sections of the store is wrong. The self serve checkout is there because the store can run with less staff and thus increase profit with a reduced payroll. His claim of more jobs in IT is also wrong. The increase in repair technicians to cover the increase in machines to service is small in comparison to the number of checkout operators who are replaced. It only takes one coding team to program a series of automated checkouts. The machines are produced on largely automated assembly lines. So no gains there. Not everyone wants to be or has the skills to be employed in high end jobs for many reasons both social educational and economic. Where do school leavers and part time workers get a job without these "menial" tasks? Many people on pensions and or are isolated socially use the trip to the store as a way to have contact with another person as a highlight to their day. I always use a manned checkout when shopping. If the store wants my money it can supply a person to take it. No manned checkouts no purchase from me. Also it is just plain nice to be able to talk face to face with a person. I've had my rant and will now retire to my box in the corner. Stay safe and look out for those in need of help in these troubled times everyone. Cheers Eric

2:27 wrong.. they have a lot of other things to do as well, so there will always be people. You using self check out allows them to use more staff for the other things that needs doing.

In a supermarket like this there would have been 8 people working on checkouts. (In addition to the rest of the staff stacking shelves etc.) Now there are 6 machines and two staff working on the checkouts (with no change in the other staff requirements). Same in McDonalds', Poundland and many other places. Machines are replacing humans at a very rapid pace and millions of jobs will be lost as a result in the next decade. Small incremental movements become world-changing over time. One day you will leave the house to go shopping and you won't have the chance to say thank you to anyone... (Which may not be a problem for you, but for older people living alone, for example, this human interaction may be sorely missed.) I'm no luddite, but I like people. Cheers, Chris

@@SailingBritaly how far should we go to keep jobs? Should we shut down internet so news paper sells more? Turn off tv so radio hosts get job back? Remove newspapers so that town crier gets job back? How far do we go to stop innovation? Remember that machines also create jobs. IT jobs I've never seen a shop have 8 checkouts open, I don't even think any shops in Norway where I'm from have 8.. maybe IKEA.. We should stop fixing our own cars so mechanics have jobs. Don't fix your own boat, probably some who doesn't get hired because of that too. :P Nah mate, I see your point, but I don't think there's too many that'll lose their job over it. Innovation will happen either way. If I can save time on using self check out.. let's face it, people in checkout are slow af sometimes.... 🤷 Thanks for your reply though
