Episode #290 : Season 9 : The South Pacific
Hello Friends,
On this episode I depart Savusavu at midnight and make way for the former leper colony island of Makogai Island. Makogai is now under the care of the Marine Fisheries department and is where they grow all of the coral for the Fijian Islands as well as growing the endangered Giant Clams. They also use the facilities as a nursery for sea turtles when they are hatching.
I have an amazing visit with the only two occupants of island, Pau and Mary. Heard about there life there and got a tour of the grounds.

You are a class act. The chief was a proud and humble guy and you treated him with the respect he deserved. In return he opened up his house and village and the island and the sea to you to enjoy. I can't see how any visitors could refuse to show the respect he deserves. Your actions went a long ways to hopefully remove some of the ill feelings brought about unfortunately by crude and inconsiderate past sailors. Hopefully future sailors to this beautiful island and it's beautiful people will watch your video and learn about respect and dignity toward these beautiful Islanders

James thank you for sharing this incredible island. What an amazing place. And how moving it is to see that wonderful man to have brought you into his community. It just makes you pause and think..they dont have have many modern conveniences and things we Americans and many rich nations have and they just opened their home and hearts to you without any questions asked. It just makes me think how much we've lost our way as a nation that should open their arms. All these modern views, politics and drive through way of life -It's shaped us to be cynical and guarded. The leper cemetery. THAT was incredible! I could spend weeks just trying to manicure it, clean, and fix all of those crosses and tombs. Very moving footage today. Thank you! 🥰🥰

With complicated and confusing messages currently infiltrating technology, politics and larger metropolitan areas, your videos are a refreshing and deeply needed reminder of a clearer/less complicated way of life/back to basics. Thank you for infusing a relaxing, peaceful way of life for those of us immersed in the rat race. I’m so grateful for your channel. “Life is most skillfully lived when one sails a boat rather than rowing it.” ~Alan Watts

"When in Rome, do as the Romans do" : thank's for having understood that and showing us how to behave on a journey. The village chief is very committed to his duty and welcoming the decent visitors. This "long format" episode elapsed peacefully and I was even surprised when it ended. 100k suscribers is a well deserved milestone. 👋

You seem to have a knack for this. I watch a number of sailing channels and yours is moving up in the ranks. I usually don't care for music in sailing videos, but you're able to mix it in at the right amount and the right type of music so that it works. Right now, I'm thinking @10:00 when the dolphins joined you. Well done and thanks for posting.

Hello! ... good footage and content. I don't know if if you are interested but the tree right behind you at 7min time is " Pana " ,"Bread fruit" ... Ask the locals. Is very filling like potatoes. You peal it and boil. Serve with fish and virgin oil and you got yourself a Titan meal. Is very healthy. Top that with fresh coconut water on the side and that's what I used to love about my joung years 18* north. Good luck!

Thanks again for the great videos and info. I especially like how you give latitude & longitude of your location, also info on checking out & in & cost. You make your videos about sailing, the people, the destinations rather than about yourself as most sailing channels highlight themselves. James, by doing that, you stand out above the rest as the best on youtube.

Awww, what a pretty place ! 🌴It took me awhile to find that sevu-sevu & what it was- they grind it down & make a tea thats Kava & sposed to give you a "feeling of well being" Thinking of ordering some from Fiji, its not that much. They are really doing good things for the clams. Wonder if youll look @ them diff now when you dive.I wouldve kept one of those pretty shells, but boats fill up fast w/stuff. I love those trails to the cemetery. Do you know that leprosy wasn't real contagious, it took a lot of skin contact over time to get it but it looked so bad people were afraid & didnt want to see them either. Just reg people shunned. I would make a bad sea travler, I would always want to stay. Glad you asked about the trees, I knew they were bananas, never tried plantains. What a great tour. That view looking back omg- just SO gorgeous Thank you ! 💙🏝
