The first stanza of the poem captures the physical, sensual activity of the natural world at once marked by facundity and decay. The stanza describes the preoccupation of youth engaged in lovemaking , birds singing song , abudantlt fertile sea and the presence of " fish, flesh or fowl " all suggest an Ireland teeming with life and activity . But the sense of passage of time and the reality of eventual decay is underscored by the use of phase " dying generations " . It is in pursuit of the life of the soul that is not possible amidst youthful , feverish activity , that the poet undertakes a journey to Byzantium. In the second stanza, the poet refers to his stance and gives reason for his intended opting out of the world of decay. He opines that old age makes a man platry. It is difficult to listen to the metaphorical song of the soul in a world dominated by the literal song of the Birds and " sensual music " of youth . The final line of the stanza tells us that he has already reached Byzantium. The third stanza shows the poet praying to the saints and sages of byzantium for spiritual assistance. The sages are embodiment of wisdom and higher knowledge. The poet has abandoned the sensual music of the dying generations. His heart is sick with desire and fastened to a dying animal. His heart is the last seat of passion and ignorance. He requests the same to consume his heart sick with desire to instruct his soul and gather him into the artifice of eternity. The final stanza expresses the firm intention of the poet that having purged his base desire by spiritual aid , he will show all natural things and processes. He wishes to become a part of the dematerialized Byzantium world. He wishes to acquire the status and nature of art in becoming golden bird , much like those hammered and enamelled by the Grecian artist .The golden bird will be so lovely that it will keep even the drowsy empero's awake . The song of the bird harkens back to the first stanza of the poem where the poet sang of mortal pursuits, the poet will again be involved in the real world. In this way, the poem has a cyclical structure. It depicts that an absolute disjunction between body and soul , and by extension between nature and art is not possible .
