Sailing to Gloucester - Episode 314- Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat

Acorn To Arabella

Acorn To Arabella

Күн бұрын

Arabella continued her sail north from Mattapoisett. It was great being back where it all started, surrounded by such a supportive and welcoming community.
Sailing through the Cape Cod Canal, Steve and Robin were faced with quite a storm. Upon making it to the harbor, Steve requested a special meal to celebrate surviving the harsh weather. Robin cooked up her mom’s “amazing chicken” to warm their souls.
It was great waking up in a different harbor. Before heading on out, the day was spent walking Akiva around Scituate, stopping for coffee, and going through the departure checklist once back on the boat.
Unfortunately, the wind was not in their favor for making it to Gloucester under sail, so they motored for the rest of the day. The traveling didn’t stop there. In order to get their truck that was parked back in Mattapoisett, a couple rides on the train were required.
Gloucester is America’s oldest seaport, and has worked to maintain its roots as a fishing harbor. If you ever get a chance to visit, you’ll see that it’s still a working harbor with fishing boats coming in and out all day.
When in the area, it doesn’t take long to spot old wooden boats sailing around the harbor-including Ardelle, built by Harold Burnham. Throughout the build of Arabella, Harold was a great resource who always provided wise advice.
Until next time, Gloucester!

Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

Hey can we get that chicken recipe?!
@AcornToArabella

Amazing Chicken Recipe Ingredients: 6 boneless, skinless chicken thighs 1/2 cup honey 1/4 cup Dijon mustard 1 cup buttermilk 1 cup breadcrumbs 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1 tsp garlic powder 1 tsp onion powder 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp black pepper 2 tbsp olive oil (for searing) Fresh parsley (for garnish, optional) Instructions: Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Prepare the Sauce: In a medium bowl, combine the honey, Dijon mustard, and buttermilk. Mix well until the ingredients are fully incorporated. Reserve a little for serving. Prepare the Breadcrumb Mixture: In another bowl, mix the breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Coat the Chicken: Dip each chicken thigh into the honey-Dijon-buttermilk sauce, ensuring it is well coated. Then, dredge the chicken in the breadcrumb mixture, pressing down to ensure the breadcrumbs adhere well to the chicken. Sear the Chicken: Heat the olive oil in a large oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, add the chicken thighs. Sear for about 2-3 minutes on each side, until they are golden brown. Bake the Chicken: Transfer the skillet to the preheated oven. Bake for 20 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C). Serve: Remove the chicken from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes. Add the reserve sauce mixture and garnish with fresh parsley if desired.

It's quite close to a 'real' Gloucester accent in the UK, but shorter. The city in the UK is pronounced something like Glaaassterr in the local accent. It's hard to write, but imagine a pirate saying it and you'll be close ;)

Great video again and Akiva...what a lovely dog. On the upcoming dodger. My view: take the temporary dodger off and do not build anything else instead. On a classic wooden boat a dodger will kill the looks of her. People that sail Tupperwareboats are sissies and need a dodger.....people sailing wooden boats do not. Again....my view as a wooden boater.

Well that was a treat. I woke up on 'Rascal' at her mooring in Salem and watched this vid during morning coffee. Pretty cool to see 'Adventure' and 'Ardelle'. I see another of Burnham's builds (the 'Fame') almost everyday, here in Salem. This is cool: I first met Harold when he did a comp evening sail for the 'Traditional Small Craft Assoc' members and fans. I learned about the TSCA Gloucester chapter when I went up there for a presentation by this ambitious guy named Steve Dinnete that was building a boat named 'Arabella'. I won't have sails bent on etc till this week end. So I won't catch you in these parts but hopefully will bump into the three of you again 'down east' later into the season ;)
