In this episode, Andy from ‪@sailingsole‬ continues on as crew for the 2nd leg of our sailing adventure to San Clemente Island. We depart the White Cove Anchorage at Catalina Island for the Pyramid Cove Anchorage at San Clemente Island.
San Clemente Island is one of the least visited of the Channel Islands by recreational boats. The U.S. Navy owns and operates the island. Access is restricted to specific sectors around the island and only during times when military exercises are not scheduled. For more information, check out the website: www.scisland.org/

Watch out at SCI, I remember swimming into the island to call for naval gun fire and watching 250lbs shells ricochet off the island and out into the water. What a great place to explore though. Great new video!

We were a little surprised to learn the live fire was coming from 35 miles away. Can't imagine how those shells sound up close!

My grandfather had a 38' Californian trawler out of San Diego. I recall as a child, around 20 years ago, we were anchored around where you are. In the middle of the night the boat rocked violently in the water with a loud crash. We all shot out of our bunks in sheer confusion. It turned out a group of commercial fisherman had dropped anchor during the night. They started drinking and didn't notice their anchor had slipped, and they ended up drifting into us. Luckily neither party was injured and the damage was minimal. My grandfather helped untangle the bow pulpits and lines, and they went along their way. Enjoy your time out there, and may your anchor hold strong, cap'n! 😆

Boats drifting into me is my biggest concern in any anchorage. It always surprises me when I pick a remote spot in deep water and someone anchors right on top of me. If I had a power boat, it would 100% be a trawler.

On the collision course - when we are racing we look for ‘trees out the back’ or ‘trees out the front’ meaning if trees on shore are coming out the back of the boat they are going to pass in front and if they are out the front, we will be ahead. If no trees - insurance is about to have a bad day. If the boat is offshore, well, we assume we are ahead and keep trucking :)

I like the trees analogy. When I used to race I just kept rolling unless I heard 5 horns from a barge.

We actually started with a reef because the winds were supposed to come up. I should have known better.

So funny to see the Idahoan potato’s as I sit here watching from Idaho. Never miss an episode. Always good to see Andy on board. Never miss his channel either. What was your water depth at anchor?
@keeldragger
@keeldragger Жыл бұрын
Those Idahoan potatoes were delicious! I think we were in 75 feet. We easily could have gotten in shallower, but I wanted to keep some distance from the kelp.

@@keeldragger So what kind of scope do you have at that depth?
@keeldragger
@keeldragger Жыл бұрын
About 4:1. 300 feet of all 3/8 inch BBB chain and properly sized Rocna anchor. I've had zero issues anchoring at similar depths, but I'd get into shallower water for more scope in rough weather.

Awesome info! Do you have any experience anchoring in zone E? It's open this weekend, so I might make a run for it. Looks like there is an anchorage around Seal Cove/Eel Point.

That trip to Pyramid Cove was my first and only trip to San Clemente Island so I do not have any additional practical knowledge. I would be wary of anchoring anywhere on the West side except day anchoring in calm conditions. From the chart it looks like Seal Cove/Eel Point have a lot of kelp and not much protection from N/NW/W winds and swell. I supposed you could always go check it out and have a plan B to bail and anchor overnight at Pyramid Cove. NOAA forecast currently shows NW 15-25KT winds and 6-8 ft combined seas on Friday for San Clemente. Hopefully the forecast settles down a bit.

@@keeldragger Pyramid cove treated me well this past weekend! I didn't make it up to seal cove but as you mentioned, I'm sure that it wouldn't have offered much protection. Only complaint about Pyramid is that I had no less than 50 flies in my cockpit within minutes of dropping the hook until I was half way back to SD. Maybe more of a personal hygiene issue though...

@@pavelgantvarg5891 must be that time of year. I had dozens of flies about this time when I anchored off Indian rock at Emerald Bay, Catalina. They followed me all the way to marina. Broke both fly swatters while attempting to knock them down. Glad you had a good trip!

Really happy with the Beta. Had a fluid leak with the ZF v-drive but that was addressed as a minor warranty repair (replaced seals). All good!
