In previous episodes we provisioned and prepared our sailboat for a long blue water crossing, well my friends the time to embark has finally come! Join us as we sail 750 miles in 6 days from Puerto Rico to the Bahamas. We are treated to beautiful downwind sailing running north-west in the trade winds. As an added bonus we don’t have to worry about a Gulfstream crossing! Although the sailing weather is perfect, we start experiencing intermittent autopilot failure about three days in. Sit back and experience the offshore journey with us! The dream of arriving in the Bahamas started back in Spain, 5 months and 5,300 nautical miles ago!

Most cruisers give up on the electric hydraulic autopilot abd switch over to wind vane hydro vane style.

We've owned Calico Skies for over 11 years now and at the time we purchased her had no idea we'd end up cruise her full time. Our current setup with the davits doesn't give us easy access for a wind vane so that's why we've gone hydraulic. After our breakdown heading north back to the US from the Bahamas last year we invested in a second (used) hydraulic autopilot to use as a backup in the case of another failure. A wind vane would great to have, but one of the reasons we've been able to cruise these past three years is because we don't have a boat loan, so we're very happy to be able to be out here now cruising with what we've got!

Even watching how you cook is interesting. I've never sailed a day in my life , so it's interesting to see how the behind the sailing stuff works.

Calico Skies Sailing it's a funny drawn out story but I'll keep it short. Maybe 😜. I was looking up KZfaq videos on driving a school bus in my small town. I have my own business and our town in desperate for drivers. While watching bus driving videos a KZfaq a recommended channel came up of a channel called "Indiana jack". He's an across country truck driver. So I was following his across country trucking videos and MJ Sailing came up on my recommendations. I watched all their episodes in three days. I was fascinated. After watching all their videos I found your channel in MJ sailings recommend channels. The bad thing is now my wife thinks I'm buying a sail boat and headed down the Mississippi River. I live 5 miles from the river 👍. Stay safe. I love your videos. I've tried other sailing channels and you and MJ sailing are by far the best videos. Don't stop with the behind the scenes footage. It's fascinating. The next egg frying video I want to see an over easy egg while in rough water 😉.

Just catching up with your videos and I have been enjoying them. Just an experienced suggestion, please take a serious look at an auto steering system. They require no power, are simple mechanical and are MUCH more reliable than auto pilots.

Thanks for the following along! We just started researching the self steering in the last week or so 🤓, we store our rib on davits while inshore sailing so would like a unit that can be removed off the transom when not on major crossings. We were so thankful that the autopilot failed when we were only a 100 miles offshore and not in the middle of one of our Atlantic crossings!!
