This week we're checking for paint cracks - the first signs of rot, checking rigging, timber, plywood and epoxy. Living and working on the hardstand in a great community of folks, most who also own ply / epoxy multihulls. We check out some low cost multi's, and raise our foremast by hand, before raising glasses. Subscribe and don't miss the next episodes as we plow through a huge list of jobs.

A HUGE Thank You to everyone who commented last week offering suggestions for our wind generator installation. The response was staggering. The words "KZfaq University" sprang to mind - but I suspect the range of expertise from so many viewers far surpasses that any single University could provide. We will update you on the changes to the install of course. Thank you again.

Tampa/St. Pete area has to be one of the best places in the world to work on a sailboat because of availability of parts, and expertise in the sailing community. I feel so lucky to have had both Island Nautical Marine 727.577.3220 for spars, sails, bimini, and aluminum welding among lots of other things, and the owner at Marine Supply Warehouse 727.258.4958 is a real force in the sailing community with his expertise on everything having to do with sailboats, and sailing in general. He sincerely likes to help you find your way whether he has what you need or not, and he gives of his time to train youngsters in these arts. I've been working on an Endeavourcat 30 for the past 8 months getting it ready for Carribean island hopping, and would have been lost without these guys. I loved watching the rigger working on your boat. How lucky you were to have had his help. These guys are worth gold!

So great to see the legendary Scrimshaw survived and will sail many more thousands of miles. A tribute to the epoxy play construction method. Finding Simon is another example of how durable these wood boats are!

Okay, you've convinced me. When I get my project going, it's going to be sheet metals/polymers & modular pieces. Fiberglass & exterior wood are more fussing than I'm up for anymore. I'll find a way to insulate or dampen the metal-drum factor, like polymer walking mats on deck & anti-acoustic foam on inner walls, or something. Thank you so much for the reminder!

fair enough. you won't even need to bother with coatings if you can live with the industrial look. the blog Morgan's Cloud said their one regret was painting her in the first place.

@@SailingLuckyfish Yah, the tradeoff will be heat management and price. Sheet metals are crap insulators compared to your wood & fiber, and they aren't cheap like they were back in the day. That will affect the size of the first experimental model, especially in a material-intensive tri-hull. Thanks for the feedback and encouragement!

Hi Stew and Zaya--speaking of last week's episode, would you consider, sometime in the future, sharing the process by which you evaluated the energy needs of your boat, and determined how to implement the green energy sources that you've installed? Yours is the first of the vessels that I've encountered in the sailing vlogs that utilizes solar, wind, and hydro simultaneously. Really intriguing! I have only the most rudimentary understanding of amps versus volts, amp hours, etc, and analyzing those factors regarding boats. You're clearly quite knowledgeable about it. I really enjoyed the episode on your hydro generator. Also, have you considered replacing Luckyfish's current motors with electric ones? How awesome, if you were able to upgrade your boat to total energy independence! Keep the wonderful videos coming! :-)

Great vid mate. Don’t use a ferrous chisel on Al spars or the corrosion bubble will come back also make sure you use abrasive paper is Al Oxide. Cheers
@SailingLuckyfish
@SailingLuckyfish 5 жыл бұрын
+Paul Bennett - great tip mate. curious to know more about that one. Is it that the ferrous chisel is leaving micro bits of steel behind? How is your Tiki coming on? did you build the vane steering or is that well down the track? Cheers, Stew
@paulbennett7743
@paulbennett7743 5 жыл бұрын
Luckyfish Gets Away : yes mate. Another way of looking at it is you are using the hardened bright mild chisel to scratch around in the Al corrosion. Sure the Al is softer but the Fe surface corrosion is always left behind. We can’t get away from introducing O2 but mixing base metals during a repair and sealing over with an epoxy paint is a bad idea/consequence.The Tiki was never started, the Hitia 17 was sold and I bought a Baker built Cape Barren Goose and have been sailing that ever since. Cher’s mate.
@paulbennett7743
@paulbennett7743 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry just reread your question: you are not leaving Fe not micro bits behind but Fe corrosion. All metals are always corroding. Some say they do that protect themselves but really to believe that you would be subscribing to the theory that all things have a spirit and I don’t see any pet rocks on Lucky Fish.

Wood is acidic which may be causing the problem with your mast bubbling at the base. I used to work on wooden aircraft. I often found fixings which were waisted in the wood from corrosion with black witness marks around them. The fixings were stainless and the wood usually Stika spruce. The solution was to put chromate paste on the fittings to stop the erosion.

She was launched April 2012. She took 3 men 3 years to build. It's interesting as we are aware of a professionally built Tiki 38 about to be launched at Andy Smith Boatworks that took 6 men 18 months to build. So you are looking at about 10,000 hours build time for a nice one.
