WANT a Chance to Come Aboard? / nahoa
Keeping a sailboat running and afloat is a constant, never-ending effort when you're on a mission to sail around the world. An average day almost always contains some sort of boat maintenance. The problem is sometimes repairs require a technician or specialized tools. And in some countries there are no spare parts. Your options are to either fix it or well, fix it! The Philippines may have some of the most ingenious and skilled technicians we have come across to date. With some simple tools and a wealth of knowledge they were able to completely rebuild both our alternator and windlass. The added bonus? We saved thousands of dollars by not having a West Marine available. Winning.
BE BRAVE. BE BOLD,
Ben & Ash

Once I flipped the battery bank selector switch while the engine was running. It blew out the diode in the alternator. After that I bought a spare diode.I see why he sent you across the road for parts ,if he crossed that road everyday he wouldn't live long.Being a mechanic myself I love to watch other mechanic do their thing. The tools may be inexpensive there but the basics remain the same.Bernard Mointesseir learned alot of his ways from Vietnamese sailors with no compasses.Amazing what can be done with low tech stuff.I see output voltage testor consisted of a light bulb.Perfect.Nothin like a chesseburger in paradise!

If you have lived in the Phillipines for a while you will realise that they can fix anything. We have become a society of replacing entire parts like PCBs and motors , pumps. In the 60s we repaired all items. So, to see the guy on the street who does nothing but motor winding, alternator repairs, is no big deal. I love it. I really enjoyed the video because of the Street Solutions! Hey, try the Jolly Bee burger there after the Maccas. Thanks for the videos

Hi guys! I’m a 41 year old from Toronto🇨🇦. I have a small family and we have been the “motor home” thing for 4 years now. OMG it’s changed my life. It’s amazing how little space one needs if it means u can travel almost anywhere in total comfort. So naturally we would LOVE to 🖕 it all and travel full time. With that thought in mind, I watch a bunch of “sailing” videos on u tube. I find u guys. La Vagabond and Zatara to name a couple more. But for some reason I get this connection vibe from from u 2 for some reason. Obviously u both ROCK! Supper cool, funny and I won’t lie, Ashley is some pretty HOT. Just saying😜. So I’m hooked. After binge watching your content I figured it out. U guys are Canadian eh! 🤘🏻 I think it’s when Ashley says “man” at the end of her sentences that really made me feel the “Canadian” connection. Anyway... I Love U guys. Great stuff. Really REALLY entertaining. U keep filming and I’ll keep watching. Be safe out there u two. 😘😘😘

Just because the technician tapped it apart with a stick does not mean anything! When he started testing windings and diodes you can bet he knew how it worked! If he has repaired one they all work the same. The US is the only country that repairs by replacing the unit. It’s quick! People want it now in the US. In other countries they do not have the units or cash so they must repair! We stock units! The other countries use diodes and transistors from donor units. He charged you 200 bucks. He probably would have charged a Philippine 20 bucks. It probably would be cheaper to hire a Philippine to repair the boat instead of doing it yourself! He may have taken insult from standing over him watching! Other countries are funny about things like that. In the US bring in a camera to a repair shop expect to get thrown out! They think you are looking at them as being scammers. Every place is different. Philippines are one of the best countries with the best people. Every Phillipino I have met I liked, great people. Love em!

Its not just in the US that they have a "it's broke - replace it attitude", it seems to be westernised culture, a disposable culture. Not many mechanics in the UK are trained to repair "stuff", they just swap out parts and bill the customer, especially so with Merc's, BMW etc. Fortunately, there are still "engineers" about that are able to take something apart, gearboxes, motors, pumps, washers/dryers and repair the components, just knowing where to look!!

Just put the cheese cloth behind the fan (suction will keep it there or just tape it in place) nad spray it with a spray water bottle. Poof,,, nice cool air. Any fan will do and you can even set up an automatic watering system if you use your head. Do not mix the water and electric soooo,,, be careful. Electric motors are relatively easy to repair, it's just that in the US, labor rates are so high that it's cheaper to just buy a new one. In the PI labor rates a much lower and the finished products are so expensive that it's more economical to repair it. The machine on the wall is a crude scratch built multimeter and diode tester, impressive actually. But yeah, that kind of repair has been standard practice in the PI since the 1940's and earlier.

not really... you could do this stuff yourself with a tiny bit of knowledge and modern "fancy" gear like a $10 multimeter

It's a regulator (regulates the field current in the rotor, therefore controlling the output of the stator), and a bridge rectifier (where AC is converted to DC using diodes). I think the regulator also typically contains the graphite carbon brushes, which are wear / consumable items, there often seem to be 2 of these and contact the slip rings on the shaft and provide the DC voltage to the field. A regulator is required because the alternator will be driven off something like the crank which is varying in RPM in some cars from 500rpm to anywhere like 7000rpm etc. it has to maintain fixed output regardless of the driven speed, alternators sometimes also have clutch pulleys allowing them to free-spin if the engine suddenly decelerates. In cars it's typically outputting 13.8 to 14.3 volt output when running to allow battery recharging of a 12V battery, which floats around 12.6 volts or so fully charged. (because 6 x 2.1V cells = 12.6 in a car battery). A faulty alternator can actually sit there and drain the car battery too, as it may be shunting energy to ground, and is directly connected to the positive battery terminal. Water is a big enemy of the rectifier, do not get it wet then power on the alternator as this can just kill the diode/s fast. If it does get wet it should be bone-dry before attempting to put power through it via ignition. Compressed air etc. to dry it. You should probably always replace the diodes, if opening an alternator, along with the brushes, which cost like 50c-$1 each. It should be cleaned, and bearings checked/replaced if required too.

I hope you get new replacement components when you get a chance and keep the repaired ones for spares. Delos got a motor rewound or rebuilt in Madagascar and when they returned there a year later the component needed the same fix again. AC is my favorite invention. As we like to say in New Orleans, it's not the heat, it's the stupidity. Good luck getting south before any storms come thru.

If it’s water cooled, it won’t help much more than 20 degrees F, and only in dry weather. They don’t work above about 25% humidity. At least our evaporative cooler doesn’t. So glad you found someone to help.

Depends what "water cooled" means, if there's an actual heat pump in the box the sea water is just because that's usually cooler than the air. Like a ground source heat pump, only in a boat.

When I was working, Finding obscure equipment repairs in the U'.S.A. was always one of my Favorites. The Philippines certainly offers a much wider Band of Equipment repair Specialist, Not so much America. You're so Lucky. Diodes are the easiest Electronic Part to repair, nothing to them, a very common Part. This Video is made great by your taking the adventure to find a very interesting Shop do such a Wonderful Job. I think i know that place, that's subangdaku mandaue right? Here, particularly in Cebu, and Mandaue, and neighboring cities you can find shops that repairs everything. There are also guys roaming around the neighbourhood, looking for something to repair, like shoes, umbrellas, aluminium cooking pots, stove, broken pail or basin, shouting like, "ayo stove, tahi sapatos, tapak kaldero, balde , hipos hinay-hay".. "ayo" means repair, sapatos (shoes), Kaldero (cooking pot) Balde (pail) and “Hipos hinay-hay,“ which is a joke, means they will also keep the laundry if you hang it outside lol!!

context and insight for 6:51 Some western folk might wonder why would you get sent across the street to buy the replacement parts yourself , this means the shop wants to uphold the honor of not ripping off (kinda go buy it yourself so you know what it really costs and we'll just install it for you) I can't imagine the heat trapped in that boat damn I would be grumpy too. But on the land it shouldn't be extremely hot since the region they went it still has trees 26-30 celsius is mild and tolerable
