7 жыл бұрын

Tucked up a mangrove creek with preparations done, we await the arrival of a Category 5 Tropical Cyclone (TC Debbie) - and she was a BEAST! Watch as we sit through 3 days of furious weather, then head back to Shute Harbour to find the carnage there.
We are an adventurous couple who live an alternative life - a life at sea. We feel better connected when we are sailing. We live simpler and have less impact on the environment. We take the time to immerse ourselves in different cultures, meet amazing people and experience what the oceans and our planet have to offer.
So come aboard and follow our adventures as we sail and explore our beautiful planet!

Thanks for sharing. I’ve been through a cat 5 in my house. Watching your husbands face I know exactly how he was feeling. This year I fulfilled one of my hurricane preparedness projects, I bought an RV. I live in south west Florida. If we have one coming my way I batten down the house, pack up the cats and get out of the way. Enjoyed your video. 🦋💞

Wow. This is by far the best footage of a cyclone I've ever seen in terms of what it's like to be there. I've been in a couple on land, and once, had the eye pass directly over me, which is just like they say -- dead calm and clear, inside a circular wall of clouds, knowing that the full force is going to come again in a few minutes. WELL DONE! Well prepared, and a great video. You deserve an award. Amazing!!!

Ha Yes, I have to say that I was the first to leap under shelter once the NE winds started to kick in after the EYE Shaggybreeks - it was brutal! I wrote an article about it which people have enjoyed. You can find it here: www.svsarean.com/single-post/Our-Extraordinary-Experience-with-Tropical-Cyclone-Debbie-in-The-Whitsundays .... Great to have you on board!

I have been on the edge of my seat for days waiting for Ep. 3 and had just about given up! Thanks so much for giving us a real taste of the nasty weather a TS can deliver and how to weather it best-a bit of good seamanship and a bit of luck seems like!

Hey thank you so much for checking back in on us. We don't always have reliable internet which can make uploading challenging - but we are aiming at a new vid every fortnight if that helps! Yes we felt very happy with our prep - and had luck on our side. I didn't get great footage of it, however about 200m from us there was a long strip of mangroves (say 80metres long) completely ripped out of the ground - so yes - lucky is the word :) If you subscribe and click on the 'bell' on the top right, you will receive notifications of our vids so you won't miss out. Happy days!

Thanks for sharing your experience with us. A great decision to use 'nature' to 'defy nature'. Being in such a narrow creek you've avoided being run into and limited the destructive forces of fetch. It was a brave decision, but the right one as it turned out.

Great vid, you really showed the brutality of a cyclone. You of course made the most important decision of heading to the mangroves early enough to get a good spot. Mariners, other boats and land are the natural enemy at a time like this. I am amazed how many boat still had jibs on furlers. rule number one is remove excess windage... I guess some people have deep pockets. We are glad you survived to sail another day, cheers, Russell & Malene

That's the only detailed coverage I've seen of the aftermath from the cyclone. Its like there's been a media black-out on Airlie Beach to stop visitors from getting discouraged. And yes very sad to see the number of boats damaged, you folks did the right thing hiding up the creek. Its surprising anyone would leave a boat on a mooring anywhere around Airlie and Shute with heavy whether coming. Its one of my favorite places I know the area recover.. Great video!!!
