I like the manga and the first anime... but I have to agree that I'm happy that Crystal's Mamoru is more like the manga version. In the manga he is much more passionate and affectionate! In the old anime Mamoru is a lot more conservative.

Woah man! Slow down there. Remember Mamoru was a lot older (or seemed to be) older than Usagi in the original 90s anime. Those second thoughts was just Mamoru trying to think of how young Usagi is, not just that but also their maturity gap.

I did read the manga and Crystal made the story suck by taking out everything that made it great and made Usagi and Mamoru’s relationship lame.

I totally agree with you. The fact that they had Mamoru push Usagi away cause of those "dreams" his future self sent him always pissed me off. Come to find out that was in the anime version only. Read the manga, much better and they actually show Usagi and Mamoru acting like a real couple, not just the crap interaction they had in the anime.

This is going to be two comments long, because one of the episodes I will mention would take up a similar length. I don't think it happened all at once in the original anime. I mean, when they found out they were mutual friends of Motoki, they did try to tone down their banter. When he finds out that he himself is Tuxedo Mask (the hero whom Usagi (Sailor Moon) is crushing on), he still keeps trying to help the Sailor Guardians whenever he can. Note that he didn't know she was Sailor Moon yet. In episode 17, Mamoru gives some advice to Usagi about how a serious cameraperson needs to capture their subject's inner qualities, not just the superficial aspects. This is the first time he refers to Usagi by name. In addition, Usagi (as Sailor Moon) does take the advice to heart and gives this lesson to the monster of the day. In episode 28, when a shy artist decides to use them for her paintings, they do try to get along enough for the portrait to be done. They do gain some respect for each other. In episode 29, Mamoru (rather playfully) greeted Usagi and Makoto when they go to the arcade to confess to Motoki. Not knowing they already knew about Motoki's girlfriend Reika, Mamoru told them what Motoki told him, which is that he (Motoki) only views them (Usagi and Makoto) as little sisters. Usagi still goes in, claiming she doesn't need his advice, this causes Mamoru to wonder if something was up. He asks Mako if she and Usagi already know that Motoki has a girlfriend, and Mako (calmly) confirms it, which makes Mamoru realize that they were more aware of this than he thought. He mentions that they _might_ have a chance if Reika decides to study abroad in Africa, something Usagi and Mako did not know. Mako demands to know more (though she accidentally goes overboard, and regrets it). He does take a mental note, do not ever get on Mako's bad side. So it's implied that offscreen, he told a more patient Mako (who later told Usagi) what they needed to know. Note that when he did that for them, it was by his own choice. End of comment 1 of 2

Comment 2 of 2 (This is only going to cover the original version of the anime, not the DiC dub) In episode 34, this one's going to be a long bridge to cross. When Usagi sees Mamoru walking by, she decides to greet him positively. It's important to note that the times when she wasn't so thrilled to see him, it was because of an accidental collision, or when he had gone up to with her. This time around, he also decides to be nice enough to part on good terms (hoping she'll always remain upbeat) with her before he goes off to face Zoicite. When Usagi notices the blood on her hand, the blood coming from Mamoru's shoulder (which happened when Zoicite harmed him as Tuxedo Mask), Usagi was worried about him, so she (shyly) followed him. When Mamoru found her and asks why she's going up to him, she (shyly) confirms that she was worried about him because of his injury. Mamoru telling her to mind her own business, while harsh, was mostly to keep her from getting involved, and by extention, getting hurt. While Usagi was offended at his tone, she didn't just choose to leave him to fend for himself, she chose to continue on because she was concerned. When he finds out that Usagi kept following, he is a bit miffed (and scared), because she got herself into this mess with him. When they both get transported, Mamoru asked for Zoicite to spare Usagi before they follow through with their duel. Zoicite, however, planned to kill the two of them before they could reach him. When the ceiling started to cave in on them, Usagi panicked, and Mamoru told her to keep running until they got to the elevator. When Mamoru clings onto his already injured shoulder, Usagi notices again, and notes to herself that Tuxedo Mask got injured on the exact same shoulder. When she noted the similarity, she quickly denied it, though less aggressively than she usually would have so. After the tension is out of the way, Usagi asks why Mamoru wanted the Rainbow Crystals, though quickly apologizes, and understands if he would rather keep it secret. Mamoru decides to tell her since there was no use hiding it anymore. He began to explain why he needed the Rainbow Crystals, and Usagi is shocked (but not scared) to know thatbhe even know about the Legendary Silver Crystal. At the age of 6, he and his parents ended up in a car accident. He survived, but his parents did not. Due to the traumatic incident, he wasn't able to remember anything about his past. Mamoru also explains that he had a recurring of someone telling him to find the Silver Crystal, which would lead him to find out his past. As he ends his trip down memory lane, he then expresses a soft chuckle, since he never thought he'd tell Usagi or anyone about this. Usagi, after listening, then opens up herself, saying she used to think he was the worst person (aside from villains) she met, but now softly says he was the "second-worst", with a little blush. This implies that he wasn't as bad a person as she thought him to be. Mamoru is flattered, and gives her a humble thanks. Once he looks away from her, Usagi then sees a bit of Tuxedo Mask in him. Usagi quickly denies it again, and like before, it's not out of disgust. When Zoicite planned to burn Usagi and Mamoru alive in the elevator, Usagi was left with a choice sacrificing her secret, or their lives. She ultimate chose to transform, not caring if he knew her secret anymore. Mamoru is quite shocked (The girl he often teased was the same girl he fought alongside with?), but is grateful that she chose to save his live too. After the explosion, Zoicite plans to walk off and (try to) lie to Queen Beryl that Mamoru perished in an "accident". Sailor Moon, however, called out to him, and vowed to "punish him in the name of the moon" for all the suffering Zoicite caused other people, especially for trying to kill them (Usagi herself and Mamoru). Note that Usagi makes it known to Zoicite that she was Sailor Moon. Regardless, Zoicite does note that he'll kill her along with Tuxedo Mask. Sailor Moon is caught off guard. Note that this time, she isn't even going into ga-ga mode at the mention of Tuxedo Mask. As Sailor Moon wonders what Zoicite means, Mamoru then reveals himself. Sailor Moon is actually shocked, and denies it internally, but once he reveals the rose, and goes through his transformation, Sailor Moon is shocked (The guy who often mocked her as Usagi beforehand was the same guy fighting alongside her as Sailor Moon?) After memories of Mamoru and Tuxedo Mask's separate quotes came to mind, Sailor Moon/Usagi finally comes to terms that Mamoru IS Tuxedo Mask. Now aware of each other's identities, Mamoru commends Usagi on her bravery, and volunteers to take over. Usagi says not to, because he was still hurt, and begs him to leave while he still can. Mamoru, however, does not leave, because he wants keep Usagi safe. When Zoicite now challenges Tuxedo Mask to fight, the former attempts to kill Sailor Moon. Mamoru moves inbetween Usagi to take the hit. As Usagi watches in shock, she is distraught, and begs him not to die. Whether anyone sees it as platonic or romantic, it's obvious that it's genuine love between them this time, because of high concern for each other's safety. While the original anime strayed a lot from the manga, it managed to make a great gradual build-up.

I'm not looking forward to the super sad moment (minor spoiler inc) where Usagi leaves the 3 cats with her mother though. When her mom starts crying saying that Usagi left like she's never going to see her again, the realness of that moment makes me cry in the manga. T_T I'm probably going to cry like a baby if the series gets to that point and pulls it off well.

***** Never mind there's so much of it - the five series plus three movie spin-offs generated soundtrack albums for each, plus a 10 CD compilation (Memorial Music Box) as well as a 6 CD compilation of the songs (Memorial Song Box), several CDs worth of instrumental renditions (orchestral, orgel, piano, brass), a choral fantasy, and even versions of some of the songs done in stereotypical French style. Most are now out of print, but several websites have archived the album tracks (e.g. sailormusic dot net). According to Wiki, altogether over 40 Japanese music albums were released for the anime, plus 33 different CD singles. Can any other anime get anywhere near that success?!

Couldn't agree more! Especially the timing and editing is disappointing and not only in this scene, but overally in the series so far. I just don't think anyone would be bothered watching if it wasn't for the nostalgia factor. It's not even that close to manga, as the last episode (4th) showed.

Antonio London Well, that makes both of us eagerly awaiting this reboot, yet only one of us have actually stopped to think why Naoko's publishers threw some of her ideas out of the window. 90s anime had many faults, but the potrayal of shitennou is certainly not one of them! I generally don't have a prolem with Crystal not being super-faithful to the manga anyway - I just wish they adapted the bloody thing without sucking all the life and/or personality out of it. Even when it follows manga frame-by-frame, it manages to suck all the fabulous flair out of it - just look at the dialogue, the expressions - it's all so bland in Crystal. Where did you get these thousands upon thousands of teenagers completely new to the franchise from, when all the non-moonie-sourced reviews of Crystal I've seen are lukewarm at best? And spare me the "have u bothered to read the manga" lines, I still have the original 97-99 editions on my shelf, second manga to get professionally issued in my country.

That is because u prejudged the show and doesnt give it a chance, when u first seen sailor moon the old anime u came in with a blank slate and that how u enjoy it...with this one it's a different story line, different take on the same story; the old one has its charm and this one has its own as well, I love it so far. Most people who complain about the negatives overblown it out of proportion, it not as serious as most people made out to be, just sit back and enjoy. Other fandom been waiting for shows they want to continue and not getting it, here toei release the new sailor moon manga version and all people doing is bitching lol.

I couldn't agree more. The older one, visually was far superior to crystal, which doesn't make sense to me considering they had an entire two years in development for SMC.

***** In my opinion, crystal look more polish and colorful compare to the old anime; the art style is not for everyone I suppose, but that is a minor detail, if u watch crystal u have to accept the art style, and stop comparing to the old anime art style since u will enjoy it better that way, this is meant to be closer to the manga, the character look kind of long and thin I've seen this style used before in other animes so it's not a big deal. If u already watched to ep 4 then u should be used to the art style by now.

I grew up with 90s one but I now love crystal version now. Why? Because at least we get a romance from the start between them. In the 90s one they never showed any attraction or love they hated each other, and that romance only showed up because of their past memories which implied that if usagi hadn't remembered her love for endymion and that mamoru was endy and tuxedo mask then she wouldnt have loved him and vice versa with Mamoru. At least in crystal there's love and attraction shown pre-memories

I think it's just cause the manga was filled with bubbles & sparklies and the idea was to be more similar to the manga then the old anime was. This will also be a much, much, much shorter run than the old anime (basically removing all the filler) so they have to find ways to establish the attraction between Tuxedo Mask & Sailor Moon right off the bat. The manga (in my opinion) shows a MUCH sweeter and gentler "getting together" of SM & TM. There's no love triangle between Rei & Mamoru & Usagi and Mamoru pretty much just aims straight for Usagi without hesitation. Also, it's nice that they clarify that he's a highschool student in this anime. In the old Anime, he looked like he was already in college (no school uniform) and was Motoki's age. Motoki & Mamoru are at least 2 years apart minimum. Oops, sorry, I'm ranting. lol

Funeral Giggle Well, nothing's stopping you from watching the old ones again! :3 Plus, they re-dubbed them in the new blurays, uncut, keeping the cultural references, the ORIGINAL names and not cutting out or changing the nature of the characters (ex: Haruka/Michiru relationship). So it might be worth it to re-watch them and have a new experience with the classics! :) As for my opinion on Usagi/Mamoru age difference... well, I'm probably bias since I'm a mom but if my 14 year old daughter was dating a 17 year old, I'd already be a bit nervous (I'd have to really stress the whole sex talk with an older boyfriend) but I'd be really, really nervous with a 14 year old dating a 19 year old. That's not even legal in my country. lol

Really? The old one needed to have a razor-sharp rose thrown out to save her sorry behind AND a cute guy to tell her exactly how to fight. The manga and Crystal versions just needed Tuxedo Mask to snap her back to reality and a second-long prompt from Luna, otherwise doing the whole fight solo.

She was always a crybaby in the beginning. She was more helpless in the old anime than this one, though. She should grow out of it more in Crystal than she did in the old one.
