One thing the fans might not have realized, is that the method of dubbing which the now defunct Optimum Productions (where the show was dubbed in Mississauga, Ontario) used, isn't the same method which is used normally for dubbing anime into English. So outtakes weren't as commonplace (though they did happen, but usually only for flubbing or missing the cue line). Unlike most dubbing which has a scriptwriter look at the translation and just see what words of similar meaning would fit the lip sync at a given time stamp, Optimum would go frame by frame, marking the lip movements on a clear 35mm film roll which matched up to the 35mm film reel that the show's current scene was on (similar to how movie projectors used to be). The agent would rotate a control wheel back and forth which allowed them to shift forward and back through the scene and see just how much lip movement each frame produced compared to the previous ones for a given character, before repeating the process for the next character on a new roll. This continued for each scene until all the scenes for an episode were complete (the more scenes or more characters involved, the more rolls of clear film used. That roll which had the markings, was then taken to the script writer who would write the script for that character in the scene on another 35mm clear roll, based upon those markings. The roll was then realigned to the original projection roll and reviewed, before it would be signed off as ready for the cast member to record in the studio. The dual reel projector in the ceiling of the studio would then play both reels in sync with each other (the script reel would scroll right to left), and a line on the wall in the center of the script reel (cue line), signaled when the cast member was to speak. So as a word scrolled and reached the line, the actor would say that line, stretching out or shortening how long they spoke depending on how long it took the script to pass through that line. Hence why Katie was talking about doing several episodes at a time, as she only would see the scenes Rei appeared in for any given episode, and only know what her lines were, not anyone else's. In the end, the process was more costly for the producers and their clients, but cast members wouldn't be in the studio as long as a result.

I'm surprised there wasn't a "Passing of the Tiara" ceremony between the old Sailor Moon Dub voice cast and the new one.

I don't care if the old dub censored the Uranus/Neptune thing (which is the most common complaint of the DiC dub, but keep in mind the standards of western television back in the day). I always loved the DiC voices and music over both the Japanese and ViZ versions. And it's not just nostalgia talking either. These ladies are genuinely good VAs.

To the people complaining that Linda is here, She has the right to be on this panel just like Tracey and Terri. She's honestly my favorite voice of Sailor Moon just for her personality. Yeah, she had trouble adjusting, and it's really jarring when you're so used to Usagi's / Serena's voice being high-pitched, but I believe she did the best she could, and I have nothing but respect for her in that regard. She is amazing, and I hope to meet her eventually. I want to be a voice actor, writer, animator, etc. (pretty much everything in the industry), and Linda is one of the strongest forces that keep me motivated.

This title is incorrect. Linda was not the original voice of Sailor Moon. She was the third and only came in, pretty much, once the show went into syndication.

What a delightful panel! Linda Ballantyne is sooo comical! I can understand why she was cast as the voice of Usagi/Serena for the Cloverway versions of Seasons 3 and 4. She practically epitomizes Usagi/Serena's goofiness! I'll bet she could even pass for a professional stand-up comedian! I like those shirts that she and Karen are wearing, by the way. And Jennifer, you are such an excellent singer. Thank you so much for doing your musical performances in Sailor Moon. I LOVE "The Power of Love"! American dubbing companies have no respect compared to japan where the same voice actor is re hired for the majority of a product iteration even decades later.

What I find upsetting is that Linda doesn’t usually reference Terri. Linda talks about her decision to accept the love from the fans, which is great, but she overshot and ended up developing a style of speaking about the character that caused her to accept the fruit of Terri’s labor. She basically took the credit for Terri’s legacy. Linda makes statements that conveniently allow you to think that she was always “the voice of Sailor Moon” unless you know better. She never brings up the fact that she was the third voice herself. She always tells “funny” stories about how it was to be “THE VOICE” of Serena and Sailor Moon without any recognition to Terri or even Tracy. I think that’s what bothers me most about Linda. Ironically, the legendary Terri, who is INDISPUTABLY the most signature and iconic TRUE voice of Sailor Moon, is the total opposite. Terri constantly gives shoutouts to Linda and Tracy despite being the most authentic voice the character ever had. Terri is world class. I just wish Linda was more humble. Having said that, I do agree with Susan that it takes a lot of guts to try and fill someone’s shoes and since they were Terri’s, she was pretty much doomed before she even started. I want to give Linda credit for taking on the challenge, but I’m just so put off by what she did once she got there. She massively overshot and it’s hard to root for her because of it. Terri Hawkes, on the other hand, has basically proven herself a hero time and time again. Humility is everything.

I think Terri hawkes sailor moon is the best. I love her voice and I've known it since I was a kid. I still have a hard time watching the other dubbed version on hulu because the voice acting sucks and I'm not used to it

Meatball head should have been reused in the new dub. They literally whitewashed our childhoods. I’m sorry if this offends somebody…but just like meatball head doesn’t make sense in Japan, dumpling head and bun head don’t make sense over here. We have got to stop acting like “an accurate translation to the Japanese” is the right path for all anime. Bye? It’s different cultures. Had the VIZ version been aired in the 90’s literally nobody would have cared for it the same way. It’s worse than the original Japanese and original English. I’m so sick of the disrespect to this cast. These are LEGENDS!
