Tension Your Dodger Frame Using Rigid Support Struts

Rigid Support Struts take the place of webbing straps to support a dodger or bimini frame. Using these struts greatly increases the strength of the frames at the cost of quick and easy knockdown, but many cruisers find this trade-off well worth it. This video shows how to install a Sailrite® Rigid Support Strut on a dodger frame. We also show how to bed the deck hardware appropriately using Butyl tape.

The set screw on the jaw slide and the tube ends (in my opinion) are dangerous. I have a smaller blue water capable sailboat that the dodger frame has the outside grab handles. When sailing in rowdy conditions you may grab the dodger frame, a 1 inch stainless frame, with gusto. And I have had the end cap pull loose. My cure for this dangerous condition is once the set screws have bit into the tube and marked the tube, I remove the set screws and drill and tap the hole for a 10/32 stainless screw that is threaded through the jaw slide or end cap and threaded into the tube. Bet that sucker wouldn’t pull off! Thanks for all the videos, my LSZ1 has be such a integral part of the billion upgrades or just changes I have done to my boat.

Nicely done and looks good, but a couple of comments: as you say, the support strut will prevent the dodger from being folded forward and out of the way when nice conditions allow or for better visibility (too big a compromise for me); the strut is fixed, so hard to adjust the tension on the dodger over time as the material stretches (or shrinks); adding some anti-seize compound into the set screws for the final tighten up, reduces difficulty undoing them some years later; finally, when possible, it's best to avoid turning the bolt when there is butel tape on it so as not to displace the tape (this might mean, dry-fitting the bolt first if it is to cut thread in the fibreglass)...impossible to avoid with a screw, of course.

Good comments! To solve the quick collapse of the frame simply use "Quick Release Clevis Pins" at the deck mount fitting instead of the threaded bolt. The deck mount "flat mount plate" has a threaded hole for the screw, but that can be drilled out or a "Quick Release Flat Mount Plate" can be used instead, if you do not want to drill out the threads. Now you can quickly collapse the frame. Regarding the question of stretch or shrink of the dodger when in the sun it typically shrinks slightly for an even tighter fit than when first installed, seldom if ever does it stretch.
