They competed twice because for three participants the rules are the following. The three participants do round-robin in the eliminations phase. Then, the first and the second competes for the gold and silver in the finals. The third athlete gets the bronze assuming that he won a fight in the preliminaries.

The fresh news is that the Russian team - aka "Individual Neutral Athletes" - will not compete at the Olympics. So all the misery was for nothing.

Still kind of nice technique using a Ko Soto attack into left Tai Otoshi and with perfect timing.

Imagine Saito going up against a normal person 💀 This was how easily he beat an international competitor maybe one weight class below

Same thing goes for Teddy Riner: a giant with a quite poor technique, but gifted from nature with a body too big to be beaten.

@@64Rosso Poor technique? I don't think you know what you're seeing if you think his technique is poor.
@64Rosso

@@MatthewNguyen-zx3de I mean it in relation with other judoka fighting in the same category: he is a giant and 90% of his technique is brute force and taking advantage of his long arms and legs. Other judoka are much, much more skillful. BTW I know "what judo is" since 1974 😉

I think this is fiction. Riner will crush everyone including Tasoev. Saito has zero chance of beating Riner as well.

Dude, I still think he's the favourite. But I think it's foolish to ignore that some of the guys can put a very good fight against him, especially: Tasoev, Kim, Krpalek, Saito, Tushishvli and Yusupov. Hell, he got thrown by a polish guy in the Open he participated.

Indeed. And it’s blasphemy, of course, but size is the main thing Riner has had going for him his whole career. Biggest, most physically dominant judoka ever? sure, probably. Greatest? Don’t make me laugh.

@@jamesbarringer7935 Teddy Riner is absolutely the greatest. He’s a big guy. So what? The All-Japan Championships is prestigious precisely because it is open weight, so size is clearly integral to judo. Teddy dominated an entire generation of players because he had the body and the skill. 柔よく剛を制す

@@mjberends8510 Rarely the largest wins the All Japan though. In the 2000's Inoue and Suzuki Keiji dominated the tournament with a bunch of strong heavyweights like Shinohara, Muneta, etc.

@@reymysterio13__50 exactly! This shows that technique can overcome strength, and so to me highlights the skill that Riner possesses.

I am from Perú. Mayer doesn't have the size to be a +100. He weights around 105-108 kg, he was competing in these tournament because they were only a few people and thought he could have a medal. he didn't knew that he was gonna fight saito hahah, but yeah i think he usually competes at -100, still a very small guy.

it looks counterproductive to try to get these last minute points for the ranking when he literally skipped the world championships a month ago. i guess it's either desperate situation or he didn't want to hand out experience with him to other people.
