nice one..as time passed I realized that Sackitye Okiyere was 3 different people .she was a young female, a 30-year-old woman, and a young man who needed money to help him through school...the common factor in all those who asked for money was that each person asked for 50 USA dollars, whether they were in Ghana, Liberia, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya or Rwanda, etc...Sakawa is a mindset of Africans who see the need to find ways to survive. At some point in many of our lives adopted that mindset. I personally wish that I can be the person to help the many brothers and sisters in Africa by providing essentials such as jobs that will better and improve the plight of the poor. There is no right nor wrong in the struggle of survival. Africa i love you

"SAKAWA"' was actually derived from the west African language of Hausa. "Saka" means " to Drop into" and the suffix "wa" turns any verbs into an adjective (I stand to be corrected). So Sakawa basically describes the act of someone (client/victim) dropping some money for the scammer.

For some people this is important to see, like my uncle. He sends money to a woman in Ghana EVERY DAY, and he’s too stubborn to listen to anyone in the family. I can see him slowly going crazy, after so many years of sending money, and all the stress & anger that comes with it. He thinks this girl will die if he stops sending money. And while i’m sure it’s not sakawa, but the similarities in the situation give me goosebumps. Hope i can get him to watch this documentary.

As a young Ghanaian, it hurts me to see how failure on the part of our leadership has created this kind of narrative which unfortunately is the reality for many of my peers. The opportunities in Ghana are endless but our corrupt leaders won’t guide the youth to exploit them. 🤦🏾‍♂️😭

So what I mostly see is that once they get money they don’t really understand how to administrate it and the mostly just spend it in trival things that they can see like expensive cars , houses , clothes brands and since they just spend thats what they think rich people are but they don’t know how rich people stay rich , Iam talking about the Sakawa groups that does this not specifically the ones in this video since there are many more

What a wonderful and stunningly beautiful piece of work. The insights here, coupled with a couple of months in Senegal some years ago, show how dire the situation for many young Africans can be. Right now, I'm involved with one who sends images I know to have been lifted from a mega rich international porn actress. I've known for a week and, when I what I know, it will be with understanding - and a few dollars too.
