Sakura's Old Japanese Songs

Sakura's Old Japanese Songs

3 жыл бұрын

"Sakura", is a traditional Japanese folk song depicting spring, the season of cherry blossoms. It is often sung in international settings as a song representative of Japan.
Contrary to popular belief, the song did not originate in ancient times; it was a popular, urban melody of the Edo period.
Melody
The "Sakura Sakura" melody has been popular since the Meiji period, and the lyrics in their present form were attached then. The tune uses a pentatonic scale known as the In scale.
Expressed as diatonic notes in the major scale, the In scale is 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 (1), 10 (3); or the notes E F A B c e[1] (nominally A minor); or in solfège Mi Fa La Ti Do Mi. The melodic scale can either be represented in older Western musical theory by the Phrygian minor or the Phrygian major mode, with the 3rd and 7th notes in the scale omitted.
Because the melody spans a modest range, it is ideally suited to instruments that have a limited pitch range, such as the Native American flute (similar to the Shakuhachi).[2] The melody arranged by Ongaku Torishirabe-gakari was included in Collection of Japanese Koto Music issued in 1888, for beginning koto students in the Tokyo Academy of Music.[3]
Lyrics
The original lyrics[4] are listed as the second verse in the table below. In 1941, the Ministry of Education published a new verse in Uta no hon (うたのほん 教師用 下) which was listed first, with the original verse listed second.[5]
sakura sakura
noyama mo sato mo
mi-watasu kagiri
kasumi ka kumo ka

sakura sakura
hana zakari[5]
sakura sakura
yayoi no sora wa
mi-watasu kagiri

This song makes me nostalgic for the first time I went to the Japanese fall festival in Springfield Missouri. It was a beautiful warm September day in 2017. I met many people, I tried on yukata for the first time (which made me feel beautiful), I watched shows, drank matcha and got a sunburn. It was a wonderful day and is a fond memory.

I am Javanese. I found some similarity between Javanese and Japanese old/traditional song. They sounds heavenly, soft like a feather but also gloomy at the same time. It always uses gloomy melody even if the lyrics ain't showing anything gloomy at all and at the very ends of the song it always uses the low tone. It give the gloomy vibes even more. So, javanese and japanese traditional song for me, so beautiful yet creepy to hear. Imagine if you hear somebody sing this song in the middle of the night

I woke up on the first day of Spring in Narita. The day before the trees had been bare. In the morning as I walked I saw the first of the Sakura blossoms and when I came to the park, all of the Sakura trees where in bloom. This song was playing in my head. I caught a flight that afternoon and crossed the International Date Line before the day had ended and flew into the beginning of Spring in the Western Hemisphere. By the time midnight came in Los Angeles, it had been 40 hours for me since the Dawn of Spring, at the beginning of which I saw the first bloom of the Sakura.

Cherry blossoms in bloom truly are beautiful….Wish I could see and attend a real cherry blossom festival. Been a dream of mine for years. Only one in my family who ended up part japanese because me and my older sister have different dads. Ever since I was a baby I’ve just seemed extremely interested in the culture. Even did the special japanese birthday celebration when I was little…..Still have photos of it somewhere. Plus recently did a Japanese combination with my Quinceanera when I turned 15. To do something special and unique like me. Wanting to combine 2 parts of me in one on the special day. 😊

What a lovely song and play! I know this melody from my time as a kindergarden teacher in Europe. With a japanese colleague called Yoshika from Tokio I was singing this song with the children many years ago. What a wonderful culture and awareness of music.

Beautiful! I have taught this song before to my students with 4-Hole Ocarina which you may know is ancient Woodwind instrument that dates back to the Stone Age in history. Japanese Composer Koji Kondo used this instrument in Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998). Saw concert years ago in Stillwater, Oklahoma where Koto was played with large ensemble of Ocarinas. Was given hand-made Ocarina from Japan. Was years later I began teaching 12-Hole Ocarina. Thank you for sharing!🎼

A very lovely rendition of this beautiful song. To my western ear, this pentatonic scale creates a feeling of melancholy. I wonder whether, as a Japanese, you would agree. I presume the cherry blossom is not only a sign of spring but also a symbol of the transitoriness of life. Am I correct?
@sakurassongs
@sakurassongs Жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply☺️ My modern ears, which know western scales, can feel the same melancholy in this song as you do. My impression is that the melody of this song is not about human sentimentality, but about the old Japanese landscape itself🌸🌸🌸 You are right, sakura is not only a symbol of spring, but also of fleeting life. It is said that their gracefulness and their ability to fall away is the reason why the Japanese love them so much🌸✨✨✨
