Everything now is strongly politicized, but, it unfortunately has to be that way; the country has been guided towards a divide and here 9 months after your comment, things are worse than ever. A significant enough percentage of people support the destruction of America now, and there are those who will actively fight that as they should. Back in the 80's there were political policy decisions that people disagreed with, but it was never about outright destroying the foundations of the country...which is what it now is. Anger and rudeness are to be expected when a percentage of the country wants it dismantled and the rest does not. I grew up in the 80's and it was a different world. A much better one.

Me and boy George are exactly the same age I remember when Donahue came out we were both around 18 my son was just barely a year old.i admired George so much because I came out too my mom at the age of 12 and it was a hideous experience for me . Especially back in those days. I'm so glad now so much has changed for the kids up & coming and boy George had a big part in that .too that's why I know I'm an advocate for our lgbtq community kids and teens. Education is the key because back in those days we didn't have any.i was a misfit kid piercings clothes nobody else wore .if not for boy george I wouldn't of had anyone too connect with. He was quirky he wasn't afraid of his gender-bending and the shock that most people had because of it he handled it so well he never changed the person that he truly was. Yeah, I was a little kid in the ‘80s, and I took for granted that performers dressed up like Halloween, as George said, for fun and to make a good show. I was kind of scared of Annie Lennox and Grace Jones, tbh! They looked so severe. 😂 I saw an interview with Annie Lennox years later, and she’s a soft spoken lady. I was more worried about artists who looked like robots or vampires, or mean teenagers. Anyone “nice” was ok with me! No, it didn’t persuade me to dress like them. Positive artists make kids want to be themselves, and express themselves. I think there’s more conformity in the heavy consumerist messages in music of the 2000s. Hannah Montana “rapping”, “J’s on my feet. So get like me.” 🤢

Growing up in the 80's was magical. Seriously. Best decade ever!!

What a trip to watch this..... I thought I'd just watch like a minute...but here I am 13 minutes into it. I was one year old when this aired...39 now. It's odd how the audience reacts. In lots of ways they do seem far more old fashioned than now....but in other ways, they almost seem more progressive. The big guy around 8:05 was super cool, despite coming from a totally different world. But I imagine his modern equivalent...would be an antisocial angry Trump voter who would find all this gender bending creative aesthetic androgyny to be totally foreign and scary and immoral. Whereas the guy at 8:05....was probably into Bowie when he was a kid. It's just strange how some things change, others stay the same, etc. A lot of the people here came across as more nuanced and aware and focused than people today.....yet also far more naive and myopic in their intellectual understanding of broader reality. I think the internet kinda stole our singular nuanced focus and attention....while making us HYPER aware of everything everywhere all the time.

I wore a frosty blue lipstick at age 11-12 in 1994, it was a dollar at my local drugstore...I thought I looked sooo cool but in reality it looked awful with my skin tone & hair color and the other kids would ask me why was I wearing "cheesy 80s makeup?" I too remember thinking of it as an "80s thing " because as a young child in the 80s I remember my eldest siblings and cousins some of which were into punk and some into Madonna and boy George wearing various shades of blue lipstick. When it started becoming popular again recently, my 1st thought was yay the 70s-80s glam rock /punk look is kinda coming back! Sadly even in 2021 blue lipstick looks bad on me, lol. Its amazing on George though! It even matches his eyes

So many teens and college students started punk bands, and androgyny was a central theme in both the male and female musicians in Austin's punk scene. It changed my life irrevocably. Austin was a blast in the 70s, and 80s, and minors were allowed in to the clubs, so I saw so many awesome shows in my youth.

I recall the 80s and 90s being extremely complicated. Cities burning, inhumane desert war, parents on Valium, sugar food/meals, toys that can kill you, people in denial that homosexuality is a thing, you weren’t allowed to think differently. Yet parents partied themselves. We rather raised ourselves. We had radio and music videos. Parents started using police on children just for smoking pot.

I was a teen in the 80's and can definitely say that music and the musicians I admired brought me a lot of awareness about various issues in the world, as well as an acceptance of the ways people vary and that humans are at their best when helping each other out. I definitely learned a lot from my favorite musicians and their music; it wasn't all mere entertainment to me. They were a window to a much wider world than my own insular one.

I was a kid when Culture Club was popular and no clue at the time how much they hounded Boy George. He was a kid in his early twenties dealing with fame along with the endless questions about his looks and sexuality. He handled it like a pro.

Compared to other performers, in retrospect, Boy George was ultimately pretty non-threatening.

He’s really not that brave….he has a large amount of mental illness and self loathing and narcissism as do most people who are flamboyant and state that they are “bored” with self acceptance. They rabidly crave attention and truly believe that they’re superior to everyone else while actually having an incredible amount of self hatred. You may not agree with me but I am as entitled to my opinion as you are to disagree. BTW, he is a heroine addict but yet sits there lying that he doesn’t use drugs.
