Barbers cut, trim, shampoo, and style hair, mostly for men. They also shave, add hairpieces, and give facials. Barbers are experts in using combs, scissors, straight razors, and clippers.
In 1999, the Bureau of Labor Statistics recorded $20,970 as the average base salary for employed barbers. By 2019, the average base salary of employed barbers was recorded at $35,190. Wages grew by $14,220 (or $711 yearly) from 1999-2019. The estimated 2020 average base salary would be $35,901. Using $711 as the average yearly wage growth, we can predict employed barbers' average salaries over the next ten years. By 2029, employed barber should see an average base salary of around $92,050.
In 2019, the wages of employed barbers were vastly different, depending on the state. There is quite a salary range depending on the state. In the lowest-paying state, the average wage of an employed barber was $24,810. In the highest paying state, the average wage of an employed barber was $57,500.
Here is how the 2019 base salaries break down by Percentile. There is a $36,330 difference between the 10th Percentile and the 90th Percentile.
10th Percentile: $20,300 (starting salary estimate)
25th Percentile: $23,880
50th Percentile (Median Salary): $30,150
75th Percentile: $42,210
90th Percentile: $56,630
The job market for barbers has grown since 1999. In 1999, there were 14,150 employed barbers. By 2019, there were 20,030 employed barbers. From 1999 - 2019, there was a growth of 5,880 employed barbers (229 per year). The government is predicting a 7% growth in employed barbers over the next ten years. This is higher than the average occupation (4%). By 2029, they are predicting 21,432 employed barbers.
Another thing to consider is the entrepreneurship rates of barbers. 70% of barbers own their own business. A large proportion of barbers own their own business. There are far more self-employed barbers than employed.
Every state requires barbers to be licensed. Most positions require a high school diploma, but not all.

I’ve never met a barber that’s on a salary unless you work at super cuts or one of those big franchises most barbers I know get paid per haircut and tips they just pay a booth rent at the end of the month or there owner of there shop takes commissions and doesn’t take booth rent me personally I work 10 hours a day and charge 30 dollars a cut 6 days a week I do roughly around 20 cuts a day on a day we’re I’m working fast I can do around 23 usually it’s just 20 tho I pay a booth rent of about 450 a month I make roughly a little over 175k gross after tips and paying my booth rent I report all of my income I know a lot of barbers that don’t report all of there Income tho I think looking up barbers income online isn’t a proper way to actually gage how much they really make since a lot of barber don’t report all of there income the only ones that really report there income is the Supercuts barbers or big franchise shops a lot of barbers don’t like to report 100% of their taxes Because of the self employment tax

Thanks for sharing! Yeah, only the IRS knows the incomes of business owners. They don't make that data public. The only thing reported to the Department of Labor are base wages / salaries.

@@CareerWatch yeah a lot of people see the average salary online for barbers and it kinda drives them away even tho it’s can be inaccurate And the owner of my shop that I work at makes a ton if I do some math we have 10 barbers paying about the same booth rent as me he usually charges less booth rent if you’ve been here as long as me he makes about 54000 just from the booth rent we pay him and he also cuts hair as well and he makes way more than me he charges about 50 per haircut and he makes more than 200k just from cutting hair and another 54k from what me and my fellow barbers pay him to work at his shop eventually I wanna own a shop like him so I could have some passive income.

@@vatow7502 yeah man I’m from la I went to lattc they have a barbering program I get you bro it’s hard to get family support no one really supported me Becuase nowadays people look to the internet for their answers and it gets me frustrated Becuase the internet is so inaccurate especially since barbering is a cash business and a lot of people take advantage and don’t report their taxes and it brings the average down when you start out man please report your taxes watch KZfaq videos go to barber shows once maybe twice a year if you can one thing that helps when I first started I would work at the shop the whole day no breaks so I never missed a chance to grow my clientele walk ins and social media is the fastest way to grow your clientele I would bring my own lunch so I wouldn’t have to leave to eat or I would wait till the shop closed to eat yeah man my family wanted me to go to college man Becuase they say it’s the only way to be successful my parents came from Mexico when they were young and wanted the best for me so they thought barbering wasn’t a good career and that it wasn’t lucrative my parents and sisters wanted me to go to college and be an accountant or a doctor like my sisters husband he makes a lot but he also owes like 300k in student loans and my sister that’s an accountant owes like 40k the best part of barbering in my opinion is that it didn’t cost me a ton of money to get Into you can definitely be very successful in this industry a lot of people think it’s to saturated i can argue against that Becuase I feel like I’m a couple years there’s not gonna be many people getting into barbering Becuase they see the very inaccurate average salary online and it drives them away but if you wanna do it don’t let your family drive you away you can be successful just always be working on your craft it takes about a year n a half to build like a full clientele If you work hard you can raise your prices I’ve been doing this since I was 15 I’m 24 now and I’m much happier than my sisters in my opinion Because there slaves to their bosses and owe a ton of money in loans

barbering doesn't require any math or problem solving skills. It just requires basic hand-eye coordination and sanitary working skills.

The other comments on here are crazy! It is true that there are exceptions to everything and if this guy in the comment below is making 175k gross per year that's incredible! I hope he realizes how blessed he is to be working wherever hes at because that kind of money is just NOT typical at all of what most barbers make. But neither is this video. I have been a barber for 45 yrs. so I know something about the industry. This video is lowballing the reality and the other commenter on here is making it way too high. The amount closer to average would be around $45,000 including tips per year for working within a shop. And yes it varies because obviously it depends how much the shop gets on haircuts, how much percentage of your services your agreement is on how much you pay the owner. Etc.. Etc.. Owners make more because they make what they do then get a bit from each barber in their shop. But Its still not usually close what this other commenter said. He must be cutting hair in Beverly Hills for the movie stars! Lol. Most barbers are just not going to be working in shops doing $30 -$40 haircuts, doing 20 people per day consistently, then only paying the owner $450 per month! Dang, that shop owner is getting ripped BAD. If its true! Its a good trade, except it is oversaturated since all the cosmetologists also cut men's hair, and now with Covid the risk of working almost on top of people all day long, with no way to really social distance. But hopefully This will come to an end! Pray!
