Joel is a cross between a farmer and a preacher. I could listen to him all day, and take away physical skills to put to use.

I'm for regulation but not when it doesn't take into account for local family farms that have to rely on inefficient centralized systems. Mr. Salatin makes so much sense.

jetle25 I completely agree. I think Joel needs to point out that he's against heavy regulations specifically for small farms. Big industrial farms still need to be subjected to the regulations. I just hate to think some people might take his message the wrong way and go against all regulations.

im for voluntary regulation. if YOU want to buy something with a label on it that says FDA approved or whatever then YOU should pay for it. If I want to opt out then I should not have to pay for it and transact with whoever I choose. I can't stand you control freaks.

How are the products sold by Walmart and produced by industrial meta suppliers like Smithfield, supposed to compete on quality and humane treatment with locally grown produce and especially with the techniques Joel outlines? They can't. It would be ridiculous to allow small farmers the ability to self certify their food, especially in the age of the internet. It has the potential to decimate the industrial farm industry and it also has the potential to confuse consumers. Can you imagine going into a Walmart and seeing meat from 20 different local farms with their own unique packaging because no one farm can keep up with demand? And if you go to a different store seeing meat from another twenty farms? God forbid they farm like Salatin without the latest chemicals and pharmaceuticals! A nightmare I tell you! The status quo is totally understandable and should be maintained regardless of the cost to the land, the welfare of animals and human health! Large industrialized farming must be protected with carbon intensive regulation!

indeed. so, we have to start over from our roots, like joel is doing here. and it seems like a good idea to major in less resource intensive perennial plant systems, these also have less harsh regulations. We all need to come together to work through this as communities if we want to get past this issue. Like Joel has said, 'picketing' will really get us so far or even know where. we have to make our own structure again.

@idm13 - Before industrialization, most knew how to feed themselves with a garden, a few animals, fish from local rivers & ponds, maybe some foraging & hunting. After WWII, those activities became ASSOCIATED with being poor! (Except for sport/trophy hunting.) So many - rich or poor - did not want to 'get their hands dirty'. )Now few fish/ shellfish are fit to eat, due to pollution by sythetic chemicals/ heavy metals - whether personally or commercially harvested.)

I completely understand as a small tomato farmer living in a regulated world, trying to not pull my hair out with each new venture I wish to pursue, especially with livestock....the regulations really hurt me and my families ability to make an income.

If most farmers were like Joel we probably wouldn’t have regulations on stuff like that but some farmers are cheap and don’t care about what happens after it leaves there farm.

Yes, mostly for loans and respect. I would never be able to get a loan without a degree. I am also doing internships at farms, but I think school is more for the business aspect of farming (marketing, accounting, mamagement). Plus, it is rather hard to just go out and start a farm. I am using this school time to plan out what I want to do and test different ways of raising animals

@idm13 "protectionism" is a policy or policies implemented by a nation-state to protect it's own economy from global competition. "socialism" is a workers' state. The issue Salatin discusses in this video is neither. He explained it in the video himself, why don't you watch it again?

Eating is your most responsible thing you can do while you are alive. We are all taught to work hard instead of to take care of ourselves. I pay twice as much as most people do. Just to eat clean foods. I am 48 and I feel and look fantastic. You can too, if you can afford it. The answer is simple. We all buy these clean foods from here on out and see what the big corporations do. STAY AWAY FROM BIG COMPANIES THAT MAKE GARBAGE FOOD AND YOU WILL LIVE LONGER AND HEALTHIER.

thats interesting, i'm curious about your reasoning for going to school first, there are plenty of readily available resources out there that explain in detail how to farm sustainably. So, is it just for grant and loan availability and offers after you get the 'credentials'. i am interested to hear your reasoning.

Simple. It cost less to eat industrial food. People can say what they want, but in the end when money is wasted on electronic gadgets, and big houses with big mortgages and property taxes (stuff other people can see and someone thinks other people care about - that itself, I don't know why), then when those folks get to the grocery store, they want salatin quality products, but they put their cutoff at 1/3rd the cost and they buy crap.

A form of biological patenting, spear and shield : - There is an investment on processing machine dedicated for industrial input, the investment is protected because it's just not efficient on others inputs. - In the other hand you have the food standards that are secreted by the industrials for the industrials. Well of course before standards there were people that would eat industrials things and die randomly. So standards came to protect the industrial world against its own violence.

Especially when most members of Congress, FDA, EPA, and even the American Supreme Court have ties to big and powerful food companies, resulting in decisions going in the food industry's favour. For example, according to the documentary, Food Inc., Chief Justice Clarence Thomas, Donald Rumsfeld, John Ashcroft, Mickey Kantor, Margaret Miller (FDA), Michael Taylor (FDA), Linda Fisher (EPA), and Robert Shapiro have previous or current affiliation with Monsanto.

It's not as easy as "Greed". Greed makes for a great one word statement, but the reality is that it has been an evolving de-evolution done with both intention and accident. I would say "Protectionism" and "Socialism" are more appropriate. Our food policy is based on cheep calories. Cheap calories requires cheap feed and maximum quantity. That requires industrial, monoculture farms. All because of LBJ's "Great Society". Feeding 60 million people on food stamps requires cheap food.

Someone needs to tell Joel he can have the butcher come to him, and an inspector will come to certify his smokehouse, too. But I guess when you're in the marketing business, outrage will get your face out further, quicker.
@SaulBadd
@SaulBadd 7 жыл бұрын
Not sure about certifying the smokehouse, but he's correct about the butcher coming to the site; there are mobile meat processing units that travel around to small operations. (there are videos here on YT) I guess your own snark got in the way of the facts, huh?
@edwinbiggs302
@edwinbiggs302 6 жыл бұрын
With as much research as Mr Salatin does into these matters, I'm sure he has looked into such an obvious option as USDA mobile slaughter units. It may not be a viable option due to costs, or the animal capacity of the unit.
